Ives answers: Who should start vs. Sweden?

    http://njmg.typepad.com/sbi/2007/08/who-should-star.html

    ....

Landon Donovan, Taylor Twellman, Michael Parkhurst, Steve Ralston, Eddie Johnson, Jimmy Conrad, Jonathan Bornstein, Brad Guzan, Jozy Altidore and Justin Mapp.

I have a hunch Bradley will let those players stay home.

If that is the case, this is the starting XI you could see face Sweden:

    ----------------Ching-------Davies---------------------

    Beasley----------------------------------------Dempsey

    ---------------Feilhaber-----Bradley--------------------

    Pearce-------Onyewu-----Bocanegra-----Cherundolo

    -----------------------Howard---------------------------

BENCH: Hahnemann, DeMerit, Spector, Gibbs, Convey, Clark, Adu, Nguyen, Wolff

    ....

Hey, you nailed all 21. How in the heck did you do that?

Not sure what to do with this thread. It seemed like a good idea hours ago when I submitted it, but it's been overtaken by the general US v. Sweden thread.

    Live and learn ...

How did Ives do? What were his misses? At first glance:

    Mastroeni (not Clark)
    Bornstein (not Pearce)
Hill and Zizzo (not Adu and Nguyen)

Why Convey? His club coach says he isn't yet to the point where he can practice two consecutive days.

Why the lack of forwards? I know Houston, KC and NY have matches. But those teams all are comfortably heading toward the playoffs. At least one of Ching, Johnson or Altidore should have been called up.

With respect to Adu, I can only guess that he is in a close competition to break into his club's first team and may have expressed a preference to not miss any club practices so as to maximize his chances of breaking into the first team.

the XI that I would start:

    --------------Howard

    Spector---DeMerit--Onyewu--Bornstein

    ---------Bradley--Mastroeni
    ------------Convey

    ----Donovan--Dempsey--Beasley

although B.Bradley is likely to do something completely different, likely including Cher, Boca and Wolff to start the match.

Is it correct to assume that this friendly match will allow 6 subs?

    My Starting XI

    -------------Howard--------------

    -------Onyewu---Bocanegra------
    --Dolo-----------------Bornstein--

    ------Bradley-----Fielhaber-------
    --Donovan--------------Beasley--

    -----Dempsey------Wolff---------

As for subs, I would like to see Marcus get a half in the net, Davies get some time up top, Convey in the midfield, and Spector in the back.

Swap Boca for Demrit (or Onyewu) and Benny F for Convey and I could get behind that.

There is no way mastro will be on the bench. With only 3 mlsers going over you can rest assured they will all start. Benny or hopefully bradley will sit instead.

This is about what i'm expecting. Mastro will either start, or sub in for Bradley or Benny also.

At this point, I would rather have Jay in the center, partnered with Boca, but I'm not quite sure where Bob stands right now on that situation.

no, i would rather have gooch playing in any friendly right now. we all know gooch has higher potential than jay, and lets face it, jay will most likely never play again in top flight football.

give onyewu all the minutes he can take

how long ago is that? He played 60 minutes in one of the pre-season friendlies and as of now he is listed in the squad for the chelsea game.

For the most part I'm pleased with this squad. I would like to see Heath Pearce over Bornstein, just to give him some looks with the first team. Plus I would of liked Ricardo Clark over Pablo Mastroeni just because Rico will be there in 3 years, and Pablo probably won't be. But other than that, I'm pleased for the most part. I like it that we will get another look at guys like Charlie Davies and Kameni Hill, plus rewarding Josh Wolff for a good start.

I'm looking for the return of the xmas-tree-esque 4-6-0 (or 4-5-1 if you consider Dempsey a forward):

    ---------Dempsey-----
    --DMB-------------LD--
    -----------Benny-------
    ----Pablo---------Jr.----
    -JB---Boca---OO-----Stevie
    -----------Howie-------

Bob called in a really speedy forward line, didn't he? I'm upset my man Holden didn't get a call-up.

The one player omitted whom I can't understand why he was is Simek. He played well at the GC, and has started very well this season in the CCC [his manager singled him out as the only one to show real class in SWs defeat this past weekend].
As for aiming toward the future, what role does BB envision for Pablo and Josh?? He doesn't know their play by now??

If 4-6-0, wouldn't that be closer to the mushroom formation ? ;)

There always has to be a few elder statesmen/veterans to steady and help the younger guys...

It was the explanation given by the manager for why Convey wasn't included in the squad for this past weekend's match.

    What about Parkhurst?

Is he injured at the moment?

I think BB leaving Pearce off the roster (who is like a 1-2 hour flight from Sweden) and flying Bornstein all the way across the atlantic when we've seen him soooo many times before speaks volumes about what BB thinks of that situation.

Well it's obvious BB has a major hard-on for Jonathan Bornstein.
