I keep telling myself there's nothing to worry about. Norwich have been down for weeks and haven't shown enough tenacity to fight their way our of a wet paper sack, let alone beat a motivated and vastly superior side. We have everything in the world to play for ... the obvious Champions League spot and all it entails ... the likeliest way to keep our world class manager ... the increased ability to attract the players he wants ... effectively killing any 'Kane wants out' drama before it starts ... Sonny's chase for the Golden Boot ... finishing above 'them' ... Naaarch are rubbish. No one with any sense will be giving them a chance of getting a draw, let alone winning. We couldn't have asked for a better fixture at this time. ... I'm scared shitless.
You're not Spurs if you're not terrified. Lasagne, 'Mind the Gap', last-day Newcastle,... the lessons are all there, and each of them somehow more vivid and powerful for us than the sublime moments like Ajax, Bergwijn-vs-Leicester, or Woodgate's faceball. What does this say about us as fans? Fear not, dear reader, you have not strayed inadvertently to BigPhilosopy.com, but I would say that Voltaire must have been Spurs, because he famously said "doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd". At half time in the NLD, a comment on BBC text said, "Surely, 2 goals up and against 10 men, it's the perfect time for a Spursy second half?" Before Burnley, many of us thought failing to beat them was likely having just beaten Arsenal. And so the doubt is transmitted inevitably to this last, kindly fixture. The 3-0 against Norwich earlier in the year may have been the most comfortable win I have seen this year. I fully expect to finish 4th. I believe it will happen. But I am far, far from certain.
I'm of mixed minds. Do I watch because I'm excited? Do I not watch because that will help Spurs? What do I do...?
I hold a Masters Degree in Political Theory and I am a Spurs fan. This post resonates with me to my very core. COYS!!
I know everyone is afraid of us being Spursy... but surely the squad has learned by now. I will be shocked if we lose this one. But I guess crazier things have happened. But the way Conte has them playing, I doubt they play flat. I think, with it being the last game, they go hard and leave it all out on the pitch. Gosh I hope so
Ok, then ... now ... let me just get my testicles situated on this anvil ... ... Spurs? ... do you have your mallets?
I came here to post precisely this. It's completely irrational. It's completely the heart of a Spurs fan. I make no apology.
If I didn't, I wouldn't be skipping the match. (Decided to watch the F1 race rather than this. Much less invested.)
I love having come here to learn this. I teach History of Psychology and certainly this belongs in the philosophy of science contributions to Psychology's foundations. {scribbling a note to add to early lecture in Fall}
Bolded is the most insane thing I've ever read on the Spurs forum. We don't learn. Spursy is in our DNA, hardwired. We overcome it only by good fortune and a tenacity born of extreme training and angst. That means we usually don't overcome it. We relentlessly pursue anti-Spursiness only to have it rear its head and snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Nevertheless, we will persist even with this demon constantly baying within.
IOW “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way —in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.” Dickens started out as a Spurs fan.
I've still got 3 weeks. Plus the potential for one of our runners to be at State. And I'll be the only coach in town.
Oof, Krul messes up playing out of the back, Bentancur intercepts and centers it for Kane to put home with a diving header. 2-0.
