While not directly Quakes related per se, all Quakes fans should be aware of this:       For the first time ever, the ESPN Classic channel will air an episode of SportsCentury featuring a soccer player.       It's scheduled to air on Thursday, November 6th at both 5pm PST and 8pm PST.       GO EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Thanks for posting this Goodsport, I had heard something about this episode but didn't know exactly when it would air. It's good to see a show made about a soccer legend, I'm definately not missing it!
Looks like ESPN is finally catching up with the Biography Channel. They did one on Pele several years ago. Ah, the exclusionism of the US sports world!!
I'm glad I could help!       I've already set my TiVo to record it.       GO EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
pele's tendered answer to the journalist's question at the end of that article about comparing his popularity to jesus christ is hilarious! pure genious.
Three more days to go... don't forget to set the timers on your VCR's and/or TiVo's!       GO EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Not only is this story about Pele on the Sports Century program on ESPNCL, but the Biography Channel will be concurrently running their story on Pele. I don't know what your local numbers are, but Life Stories featuring Pele is on channel 119 on DishTV, at these times: Fri Nov 7 7:00 am to 8:00 am 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm Sat Nov 8 at 1:00 pm to 2: pm Sports Century on ESPNCL has a bunch of other times besides the one Goodsie listed. Thursday 8 pm and 8:30 pm Friday 9 am and 9:30 am Sunday 8 am and 8:30 am
It turned out to be pretty good, if a bit too short (it was only a half-hour instead of the usual hour that most episodes have been). While the Biography Channel's hour-long version that Albany mentioned that was first broadcast late last year covered Pelé's life more in-depth, the SportsCentury version did cover his NASL days more (including interviews with fellow Cosmos personnel).       All in all, it was quite enjoyable.       GO EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
The optimist would probably say that the U.S. cable TV networks are finally waking up to Pele and to soccer.       The pessimist may simply state that ESPN and the Biography Channel ran out of athletes (including racehorses ) to feature.       Could the truth be somewhere in the middle?       GO EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
the NASL thing is all about the footage available, methinks. Probably not much of a video library on past World Cups at Bristol. maybe ESPN/Nike preparing for the next Pele, named Freddy. Stay tuned for a big announcement re the new Pele and TV.
Another program featuring Pele will be aired Nov. 12, Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. by KRCB, channel 22, out of Rohnert Park (North Bay). It's called "Global Trekker" and is about Brazil. No Brazil without Pele.
After the second of back-to-back broadcasts of Victory on the ESPN Classic channel this Sunday (1/11/04), they'll be repeating this episode of SportsCentury.       GO EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
