    Gosh, I hope so.

  5. I would be utterly surpsised if none were made.

Question for people following SportsCenter regularly: Is it my imagination or lately(past 1-2 months) there has been an increased coverage of MLS and US soccer highlights on this show?
And a lessening of disparaging remarks about the game?

personally... i hope the disparaging comments continue... it wouldn't be sportscenter without snide comments on the sports that they cover

as for an increase in coverage... i haven't a clue... i just know what i saw last night and today

Sometimes they show MLS, sometimes not. It doesn't even seem to matter whether it's a "busy" sports day or not.

Anyone complaining about "snide" comments from Sportscenter is someone who doesn't actually watch the show.

  8. Ok... the lack of a smiley here implies seriousness on your part.
And so then, why do you so covet the disparaging comments on this show?

  9. Another question for those in the know-how: do you think ESPN staff members lurk in these boards?

    To answer your question RevdUp,

Yes, I also have noticed an increased amount of coverage of MLS highlights on Sportscenter and it is void of any derogatory comments also. Now thats not to say they haven't been adding some good humor in the clips, not unlike any other highlights of other sports. It is definitely a good thing to see...They have been consistently showing highlights on the Xpress sports segments towards the end of the show, atleast that is what I think they call the segment.

Ah, but there's the kind of smarta$$ remark you'd make to tweak a friend or brother you love, and then there's the kind you might make to someone for whom you have no respect, let alone affection. For years on ESPN, the big sports got the former, soccer always the latter. That has finally shifted somewhat in the past few years.

Didn't think I could stay off an ESPN thread, did you?

I don't even have enough time to watch all the matches I tape, and some of you are wasting time looking for highlights on SportsSmartassCenter.

the problem is that you are searching for respect that shouldn't yet be there... we're lucky to get any highlights... look at our numbers... attendance and tv

we shouldn't be getting major highlights on sportscenter... i just enjoy watching the show... they tend to rip every sport, every team... it's why the show is entertaining and funny

i'm really not sure how you can't find the preki comment as being funny... it's a joke, the show's about showing sports highlights and cracking jokes... that's why people watch it in the numbers they do

    lighten up, francis

Obviously, you all don't watch when they show Bengal highlights. They get more inside jokes than any soccer highlight I've ever seen.

It's hysterical. Even ESPN is aware that Preki is both good and egotistical.

    That's just good writing.

You're still missing the point. Yes, some of the recent stuff about MLS has been good, but this type of humor toward soccer is relatively new. The difference now is that they are developing enough resepect for the game itself to do enough homework to make fun of it. When they're making fun of the Tigers, they're making fun of the fact that their crap play, not the game itself. Even then, it's never really truly mean-spirited. In the past, SC announcers would made cracks about the game of soccer itself in a very condescending and at times mean-spirited way.

  22. And I still fail to grasp the humor within the Preki remark.
Another member earlier stated that it was a play on Preki's character(egotism?). Is this true?
If so, then I must admit I am not too familiar with Preki's psychological attributes.

Like others had said, Sports Center got where it is now by not being totally serious. They made fun of my beloved Broncos for signing Jake Plummer to a contract. They've made fun of the bengals 7,952 times now...this year. So if they make fun of soccer, shrug it off.

That's a sign that we are being accepted. Or something.

  24. Understandable. I have no problem with this.
But only because they were criticizing teams, NOT seriously ridiculing, disparaging, deriding the game of football itself!
These are two entirely different issues.
