Even though I am a Benfica fan I have to say that you guys got a tough group. It's much harder than the one we got. It will be a real challenge to finish ahead of Bayern and Inter. I don't know too much about Spartak Moscow's recent form but playing in the cold in Russia is always difficult.

If it's any consolation I think you guys probably have the best all-round team in Portugal this year and have a better chance of getting out of this group than Porto or even my Benfica would have. Good luck!

Do you guys think playing Inter in the Centenario match will help us or hurt us in European play?

I think it will hurt us. While both teams had the opportunity to study the other's tactics, Sporting now loses the element of surprise -- an edge I thought this young team could use in Champions League. Watching videos and reading reports can only do so much, but now that they've been matched up against us on the pitch, they'll know which weaknesses to expose -- No. 1 being the size factor. They'll kill us in the air, Vieira will manhandle our midfield and their backline will suffocate our forwards. Man, I hope I'm wrong.

Nos foderam! We got screwed! Oh, well. I think we can get some wins here and there, keep the group tight and sneak in. The only team I'm worried about is Spartak, and that is only because of they are the unknown. We know Inter and Bayern are tough.

    Forca Sporting!

Not all is lost. If the game was played on paper, then we may as well battle for the third spot.

Facing Inter in the centenary match does leave out the element of surprise, but on the flip side we know what to expect from the team. Bayern lost arguably its heart and soul in Ballack, but still have a very skilled side. Spartak will be the team that decides if Sporting will play football in early 2007 or not. It is imperative that Sporting get maximum points against the arguably weakest team in this group. The fact that Sporting's first away game is in Moscow will actually be a bonus, as we don't have to play in the bitter Russian cold.

All in all, you need to face the best in order to become the best. Against Inter, I have very little faith in getting 3 points from either leg, as Inter is a top 5 European squad. Sporting also has a poor history against Inter Milan. Sporting will need to do get as many home points as possible and hope to sneak a tie or a win on the road to even think about the UEFA Cup spot, let alone 2nd place. I believe in this team. We have a very youthful, talented, hungry squad, one that is itching to erase the memories of last year's UEFA Cup debacle and show that they are a similar if not stronger team than the one that reached the 2005 UEFA Cup final. Let's show them what we are made of, boys :)

Anyone know when tickets are going on sale? I'm going to be in Lisbon then and want to make sure I buy tickets before then.

    Thanks!

Since we play the tough teams first at home, our critical games are the first 3. We need to sum up six/seven points, all else will depend on how the others do. Bayern is still a tough task, but our players know of their history, but history gets rewriten daily. Look we just lost a planet today.

We don't have the names (yet), but we have names that will be future stars. As a Sporting fan we really need to believe in this group.

This team and staff look hungry for glory, we can match up with any of them.

I think the main objective should be not to be blown out at home in the opening match. If we can draw with Inter at home I think this could be seen as a positive.

I like to look at things this way, Inter has some technical players but their defense relys on intimidation and being physical. Let's hope we get assigned a Ref that knows what he is doing.

Right now on paper, it looks like it will be a long day for SCP...there is just no way Liedson will have space against those monster defenders. Nevermind that they have Viera in the middle.

Adriano and Crespo up front along with Ibrahimovic...I for one am not expecting to much from this very young SCP side.

I love them to death, but we need to be realists in this case.

Just wanted to know if any of you ever used uefa.com live match in the past. Is the qualtiy good, subscription worth it.

I think that will be the only way to watch Sporting game due to the fact that Chelsea & Braca, Liverpool are playing on our matchdays. We know who TSN will show.

Either way, each Portuguese teams' games will be on TV. Whether or not we need to go to a sports bar to watch it is a different story. The games that will be on TV will more than likely be on Setanta Sports USA or ESPN Deportes, which means Canadians will be SOL - well, some of us will ;)

I had it last year, and will probably get again this year. Only one thing the video of the games aren't live only 90 minutes after the game.

I loved it. The quality is pretty good, but you need high speed internet.

Figo seals incredible Inter Super Cup comeback

    AFP
    August 26, 2006
MILAN (AFP) - Inter Milan came back from 3-0 down to clinch the Italian Super Cup in extra-time with a 4-3 win over Roma.

Luis Figo scored the winner with a free-kick to cap a fine recovery for Inter who were playing in the season curtain-raiser as league champions having inherited the title from disgraced Juventus.

But they looked anything but the top side on the country when they slipped to a 3-0 deficit after just 34 minutes of the game at the San Siro.

Amantino Mancini gave Roma the lead in the 13th minute when Christian Panuccis cross was missed by both Javier Zanetti and goalkeeper Francesco Toldo.

Their confusion allowed Mancini to head into the empty goal.

Alberto Aquilani made it 2-0 on 25 minutes after being set up by Francesco Totti and the same player added the third nine minutes later.

Rodrigo Taddei released Aquilani to tap in from six yards with the Inter defence distracted by Totti.

Inter slowly imposed themselves on the game and Patrick Vieira pulled one back on the stroke of half-time heading in a Figo free-kick.

Inter coach Roberto Mancini brought on Hernan Crespo for the disappointing Adriano early in the second period and the former Chelsea man repaid his manager's faith by making it 3-2 inh the 65th minute.

The Argentinian striker was first to a Dejan Stankovic cross to head in at the near post.

All the pressure was coming from Inter and Roma reacted by replacing Totti with Egyptian star Mido.

Inter levelled when Zlatan Ibrahimovic's miss-kick fell for Vieira to tap-in from close range.

They grabbed the winner five minutes into extra time when Figo curled in a sublime free-kick past Doni in the Roma goal.

Roma finished the match with 10 men after Christian Chivu was red-carded for bringing down Figo and they were unable to stop Inter winning the Super Cup for the second year running.

Wasteful Bayern held to goalless draw by Nuremberg

BERLIN, Aug 26 (Reuters) - Wasteful Bayern Munich had to settle for a goalless draw at home to surprise Bundesliga leaders Nuremberg on Saturday.

Bayern, double winners for the past two seasons, had enough chances to win the match comfortably but Roy Makaay had an off day and there was no luck for Lukas Podolski after the Germany international had replaced him early in the second half.

A draw was enough for Nuremberg to edge back to the top with seven points from their three matches played.

Bayern are behind them on goal difference, sharing second spot with Schalke 04 after their 2-0 win over Werder Bremen on Friday.

Hertha Berlin and Mainz will have chances to join the clubs on seven points when they play on Sunday.

Hertha are away at Hamburg SV, while Mainz host Eintracht Frankfurt in a local derby.
