Been whispered around for a while. https://www.forbes.com/sites/justin...g-sold-for-roughly-700-million-an-mls-record/
Unless a big hitter has been a secret investor for a while and now wants to try running an entire soccer franchise, I don't see any names but Peter Mallouk.
As Inca said, they’re aren’t many options since it’s part of the existing ownership. I’ll just say Inca’s guess is a very good one.
Wild. Peter Mallouk did my will and power of attorney back in the early 2000s. Now he runs Creative Planning and owns SKC. What a successful person. The total opposite of the nepo baby.
"The Illig family continues to lead the club’s shareholder group, manage the club day to day, and represent Sporting Kansas City on the MLS board of governors.” Meh.
Okay, so the forbest piece notes that SKC revenue is exceptionally high, was it sixth, i forget. Malouk is one of the 5 richest owners in MLS, and would be one of the 20 richest sports club owners in the US, according to another Forbes piece, but they don't count CFG and Mansour ($30b) or the Miami guy, so I'm guessing there is some construction that muddies those. He's a KC guy, so leaving is not a threat. SKC is in really great shape, aside from on the field. There are no excuses for not scaling way up on the field.
I think the most important traits Mallouk has are ambition and drive. Like I said above, he was making house calls in the early 2000s doing simple estate planning. He somehow amassed enough capital to purchase Creative Planning and then turned it into a major financial/estate planning giant. Someone with that kind of drive doesn't become majority owner of a sports franchise to watch it flounder. This is a major turning point for the organization and something that could produce the same type of positive impact as when OnGoal purchased the club from the Hunts.
Exactly, in a lot of these sort of situations, the owner who doesn't have majority stake stays in their spot to help ensure a more smooth transition. Wouldn't surprise me if in the next 6-18 months (starting post World Cup) it changes.
It is exceptional. SKC revenue is higher than that of 12 Bundesliga clubs, 11 Serie A clubs, and nine Ligue 1 clubs. We are not small time players. We need to stop signing them.
https://www.bizjournals.com/kansasc...ter-propio-language-services-marco-assis.html This article has another self-made billionaire who got his MBA from UMKC. Will be interesting to see if Assis gets involved at some point. "Assis has folded part of his upbringing — a love of soccer — into the company. Propio is a sponsor of Major League Soccer team Sporting Kansas City and has hosted events at the club’s stadium. Last year, Assis became principal owner of the Sarasota Paradise, a new USL League One pro men’s soccer team in Florida, near his winter home. ... Assis said he has reached a point in his career where he can pursue more ventures that align with his passions. One of his ultimate goals is becoming a Sporting KC owner."
And today from Mallouk's own mouth. I’ve confirmed with Peter Mallouk that a deal was finalized in December for him to become the new majority shareholder for #SportingKCMallouk told @KSHB41 in a statement:“I love Kansas City and Kansas City sports and when presented with this opportunity, I didn’t hesitate.” pic.twitter.com/taE18PKy9M— Matt Foster (@MattFosterTV) January 17, 2026
