Re: Sporting Kansas City in the Media: 2011 And has a reasonable understanding of how MLS and US Soccer in general works. LA tried the recognizable name thing, and it didn't go so well.
Re: Sporting Kansas City in the Media: 2011 After Thursday night, I wouldn't trade LSP it for anyplace else.
Re: Sporting Kansas City in the Media: 2011 If you're going that route, you need a TD that knows the league. Unfortunately I'm not sure many recognizable names would want that.
Re: Sporting Kansas City in the Media: 2011 Not sure what you mean by "within the context of MLS" but how about Ricki Herbert Michael Laudrup Tommy Soderberg Caleb Porter Paul Mariner Bob Bradley
Re: Sporting Kansas City in the Media: 2011 He means that the coach either has to know the league, or be very willing to learn the ins and outs of the league. The first three would fall into the later category. DC was trying to throw a ton of money at Porter to leave Akron and he didn't budge, so I don't think he's leaving. Mariner or Bradley I could see, I'd prefer Bradley over Mariner.
Re: Sporting Kansas City in the Media: 2011 I'm personally hoping Bradley is fired from the National team position for a few reasons. I think the US team is needing to switch things up some (not a fan of having any national team coach for 2 full cycles) and, I think the US could do better. The last reason is I hope if he is fired we can find some way to hire him, I think he would be a great hire for us (if this past game was just a one off and not actually the turn around we are hoping it was).
Re: Sporting Kansas City in the Media: 2011 Exactly. It's not like we'll be making a run at The Special One. Although I suppose we could afford the puppet version.
Re: Sporting Kansas City in the Media: 2011 Just sat down for coffee and I read this from Sam Mellinger in the Star: http://www.kansascity.com/2011/06/13/2948639/game-is-showcase-for-americas.html "The rub here is that if the stadium doesn’t help Sporting KC improve in the standings, the place is a failure." Really? "This is a $200 million gamble that Sporting KC is making — most of it with public money — in a league that doesn’t often play in that tax bracket. These are high stakes." As I understand it, the public money (bonds) is already spent. The question now and going forward is the ROI. As a KS taxpayer, I think it is worth the cost.
Re: Sporting Kansas City in the Media: 2011 Weren't the bonds like 65 million? Did they get more approved or was the original amount higher?
Re: Sporting Kansas City in the Media: 2011 Sam stated "most", which to me reads "nearly all". So, surely Sam is correct.
Re: Sporting Kansas City in the Media: 2011 Every ounce of ink the Star devotes to the drivel of Sam Mellinger makes me miss Joe Posnanski even more. And even Jason Whitlock a tiny bit, which I did not think would ever be possible.
Re: Sporting Kansas City in the Media: 2011 Recent Goodness: 1) Robb on 810 last Friday and this Monday (both podcasts are on their website) 2) Local TV media including our team (e.g., Fox 4 weather - see calendar thread) 3) I briefly heard a discussion on 610 this morning at about 7:45 that discussed differences between Mark Cuban and David Glass in which SKC was mentioned several times as being progressive and generally a great org. I really hope SKC can continue to seize the moment to cement itself as a "major league" team in the psyche of this city.
Re: Sporting Kansas City in the Media: 2011 The only thing missing in my mind is wins --- we need some real success and contention. Need to stick one on Beckham and the Galaxy when they come to town, same with New York. Make the playoffs -- that kinda stuff
Re: Sporting Kansas City in the Media: 2011 Yeah we have had our hype & honeymood period. USA match helped keep the momentum going. I would hope a convincing win on Friday comes next. I am already nervous about attendance during the deluge of matches in August.
Re: Sporting Kansas City in the Media: 2011 What we need Friday is not only a win but a big win. 4-1 would have been perfect to keep this hype going. Hopefully, the players are riding a high from Sunday.
Re: Sporting Kansas City in the Media: 2011 Getting the morning after the game article on the front of the sports section in the Star would be nice during the summer. I do not expect it to be above the fold, especially the next two weekends with the Royals playing St. Louis and Chicago.
Re: Sporting Kansas City in the Media: 2011 FWIW, Fox 4 included the Wizards logo on the long range forecasts last season as well. Not as often in the morning, but it was definitely on there.
Re: Sporting Kansas City in the Media: 2011 Yep, saw that yesterday at the gym....was duly impressed!
Re: Sporting Kansas City in the Media: 2011 Tonight on 610, Thad Bell joins Callum from 7-8pm. Phone: 913-576-7610.

Re: Sporting Kansas City in the Media: 2011 For those that aren't following Handmark on twitter (they make Tweet Deck), they had a pretty cool tweet earlier today: "Please support TweetCaster-lover and soccer stud Matt Besler. Vote him into MLS All-Star game! Text Besler to 22442" Just fyi, that message reached nearly 1 million people. I see they're from KC. Anyone here just happen to work for them?
