The Columbus paper had a report this morning that the reason the match was moved was due to this happening. It is hard for me to believe that the Revs management hadn't known about this prior to Wednesday. Perhaps it should have been postponed and held in the Gillette parking lot the same weekend as the next Pats game.
"Perhaps the Revs management just plain sucks." Tell us something we don't know.... It may be safe to call them just Patriots Mgmt. from now on.
Perhaps they should just hold all the games in Columbus where Crew management can guarantee a sellout crowd just like the MLS Cup last year...oh wait nevermind
when i wrote this "spookyworld" thing on the bds on wed night, i was pretty irked for being bumped by a haunted house. but, i'm pretty sure...the revs "used it as an excuse" to get some extra time for the guys with the league office. website showing today, that any poss gm 3 will be held on 10/12 at 4pm. 10/13 has green bay in town. i agree, revs management sucks! i've been lobbying for sponsored corner kicks, cheerleaders, and the playing of dance club music during our matches for months now...and all they keep giving us is soccer!!
Haven't seen this posted here...apologies if it has been- Jim Smith takes the Revs management to task: http://www.1460thefan.com/tf.php?story=dispatch/news/sports02/oct02/1520786.html Somebody cue Rev-Oke and George P to come on and tell us to focus on the soccer and ignore the fact that management f's up essentially everything that it can. I don't mean to sound pissed off while the Revs are enjoying their best run ever...but it would be nice if I was enjoying this season as much as I am b/c of the Revs management, and not in spite of them.
I don't disagree. The team does need the extra day of rest. But there is no reason for them to change the date 4 days before the match- after the now-incorrect date has been published in newspapers, mlsnet, the Revs own website, etc. It is a stupid business decision any way you slice it. The excuse was valid- if less pressing- at the beginning of the playoffs and if there was even a chance that we would need the extra day, the change should have been made then, before the playoff schedule was published.
Absolutely- the people that this "short" notice affects are primarily season ticket holders and/or the fans that actually looked at the schedule and made plans based on it- not the "walk ups" or "jump on the bandwagoneers" and such- so in my opinion this decision while an giving an extra day to the team- gives something a little different to so-called "loyal fan base"! Jon
Yep...with that last minute change just our family went from four able to attend down to one...and he doesn't drive yet! Anyone here with kids that play club soccer have a conflict. With a Saturday evening game all of us soccer moms (and dads) could get kids right from the field to the Razor, but a four o'clock game on a Sunday totally screws us. First work/school night playoff games and now this. We'll be giving our extra tickets to any Revs fans who promise to go and make a ton of noise in our section.
We were lucky Our MAPLE game didn't conflict. As Danizinho pointed out in another thread, this wouldn't be a problem if the Irwins (who direct MAPLE) were less autocratic, and allowed coaches to reschedule their matches around playoff games. If the Revs are in the final, our team is forfeiting, and the team is going to the big dance.
MAPLE Jon, you were either kidding or naive. Do you know how hard it is to reschedule MAPLE games ? You have to get both teams, both coaches and refs together ? Remember, it gets dark around 6:30 pm now so a week night is out. Sunday is out. Many kids are dual rostered and play Saturday is it is problematic as well. The MAPLE league is correct in not letting coaches reschedule the games. The season is too short as it is, these games would never get played. My son plays at Devens at 2:30 pm. We'll finish around 3:45 pm, make Foxboro around 4:30 - probably just miss the first 20 minutes.
MLS Cup was a sellout. But some people did not care to see two teams from other sides of the country.
Re: MAPLE I don't feel either foolish or naive, and I have been involved in trying to reschedule MAPLE games. With sufficient time and good will, games can be rescheduled with minimum fuss. The variables are field availability, ref availability, and the agreement of the coaches. If the coaches work this out ahead of time to their satisfaction, what interest does MAPLE have in obstructing this? Why do you feel the games wouldn't happen?
Dr. Jay: The Irwins, in short, are direct descendants of Benito Mussolini and whoever was the last dictator Paraguay. They have no regard for anything outside of their empire and their wallets. They could change things. But they won't. For one thing, there's no competition to their single entity program. I've e-mailed them and the Toads United at MYSA regarding changing game times for significant events - USA v. Holland on May 19, etc. - and they (both entities) have never even given me the courtesy of a simple reply. Why? Because they feel entitled. That's the short answer (MYSA, if you weren't aware, in the event they were to ever get their collective crap together couldn't even begin to figure a way how to pick it all up). Also, back to my main premise, MAPLE can could alter match times. The two coaches need to secure a venue, need to agree to change along with the ref assignor. MAPLE should be made aware of the change, too. That's it. However, MAPLE doesn't give two turds about that. However, and no disrespect intended, they do allow for match time changes on Jewish holidays. Basically, it's a shame that MAPLE encourages their players to find ways to circumvent attending matches at the highest level. Our team has a match on October 20. If the Revs are in it we - my son and myself - will have to watch it from the confines of our family room. To me, it's a sin and you nor anyone else here will ever convince me otherwise. The Irwins, et al and the other elitists who are right there in lockstep with them, have absolutely no place overseeing soccer at any level (Don't even get me started on the process of appealing a match). If you're a veteran of this board and have any knowledge of my preferences you'll know what I mean when I write that they belong with the likes of Octavio Zambrano and Ray Hudson - Someone needs to come up with an emoticon for the middle finger because that's what would be here in place of this sentence.
QUOTE]Originally posted by UncleSam527 MLS Cup was a sellout. But some people did not care to see two teams from other sides of the country. [/QUOTE] Actually it wasnt sold out, there were still about 3000 tickets still avaiiable at the box office that morning an I know this for a fact because I was at the game an people were buying them an they also advertised tickets still available on the Newscast the night before, I am also getting so sick of hearing from C-Bus fans that they didnt care about 2 teams from the other sides of the country, that is a f-ing lame ass excuse,(I understand the 9/11 excuse from people in other cities) You should support US/MLS soccer.
Geez Danz - don't hold back -tell us how you really feel. I do not know the Irwins personally but I do respect what they have built. MAPLE is not perfect but my kids are better players because of the opportunity the league gave them. I have no personal knowledge as to why the league refuses to alter their schedule for soccer related events, no matter how big. Maybe its because the league is single minded in that they feel their games are THE most important thing. Just like the fans on this board feel about the Revs or the US Nats. Its all a matter of perspective. As to the actual practical problems that would be created if the league suddenly said: "All MAPLE games this Sunday at 2:30 pm and 4:00 pm are cancelled due to the Revs game. Go reschedule on your own" I suggest that many if not the majority of these games would never get played. The season is too short already (7 games). Jon said "With sufficient time and good will, games can be rescheduled with minumum fuss" and I agree with this statement. The problems is (1) insufficient time (2) not always good will amongst coaches (3) a real lack of field availability. For many MAPLE clubs, the only time they have their fields is Sunday afternoon. They cannot do make up games since the regular season games are already being played. Hey, this game change was a HUGE pain for me and I will miss part of the first half. Maybe is was Spookyworld that caused the change but I think its better for the Revs this way since they have one more day of rest and the Crew have one more day to get flat. Any "personal issues" I have with the change pale in comparison with the STRONG NEED FOR THE REVS TO WIN THIS GAME ! Anything that gives us an advantage I'm in favor of.
Dr. Jay: My son's a better player, too, because of MAPLE. However, he's a fan and the sport in order to continue to grow needs more fans. If there isn't a MLS game on late Saturdays invariably we're watching a Portuguese First Division game on RTPi. If Puma's playing Atlas on Sunday on UniVision, we're watching, even if the announcer's saying that I'm a total turd and haven't a clue what he's saying. We're there. MAPLE just doesn't get it and the people running it don't care about outside influences. Take for example the US Nats v. Holland on May 19, the appetizer, basically, to WCC 2002. There was plenty of time for MAPLE to consider changing match times or give coaches the latitude to workout an arrangement. But, they, in their infinite wisdom, gave any proposed changes or alterations a unanimous thumbs down. MAPLE players don't pay a mortgage and the overwhelming majority don't even know about the birds and the bees or what that growth down there is all about. However, they do know about the Taylor Twellmans, Landon Donovans, Hristo Stoitchkovs and Brian McBrides of the footie world. MAPLE needs to encourage that interaction, but, in my opinion, they do more than they should to disenfranchise the up-and-comers from the sport they love. The bottom line to me is this: We Need To Support Football At The Highest Level In The Country. It can't thrive otherwise.
Hear, hear Danizinho! I have some experience with MYSA, MAPLE and other soccer organizations, inc. high school. I am always surprised at hoe few kids who play serious competitive football around here have EVER seen a top division match in person. No wonder they don't know about spreading the field, moving off the ball and pressing on defense, to say nothing of the offside trap. That stuff doesn't translate on television and, therefore, doesn't enter their perspective. BOOOOOOO to organizations that don't seriously support MLS and prefer to watch ManU videos and fanticize about D. Beckham's sex life. JIM DOW
