that's hillarious. they should give each player a big plastic bubble to play in too. that'll protect all of them nicely don't you think?

Sponsor. Hey, if it makes the team and the league money...

At least the ones they wore in the actual game don't look as space-age gladiator-ish as those that appear in their ads.

They just looked like semi-thick black headbands.

does ALL the team HAVE to wear it or do they have a choice?

I only remember seeing Kim Pickup and Pags wearing it. If anyone else in the game had one on, I didn't notice.

they should make Lalor wear one! Mac nearly took her head off in a game last year! Jen was out the rest of that game and the next game or 2 because of the blow to the head.

I found the headguards to be pretty goofy and almost thought it was a joke at first. On the other hand, it is another sponsor and the ladies would know the importance/reasoning for the full90 band before I would. ::worried look [jk]::

What a joke! These things look as queer as a three dollar bill. This is not the type of sponsor the league needs or should be courting. This company doesn't have anything to offer the team or the league in terms of credibility. How does this attract more fans, sell tickets, drive ratings, win over "core" soccer fans who look sideways at the women's game already? We don't need these.

We need Fortune 500 companies buying airtime and a TV slot of our own, that doesn't compte with MLS. I talked to many MLS fans Saturday who were thrilled the WUSA game was on at 11:00. Thank goodness that nobody was wearing these goofy headbands.

Joy looks like she's trying to fight off a laugh :D

Hey, football players wear protection and we tackle as hard as them at times (Beat). Remember that cut Gro got?

I hope that these things aren't bad luck!

The first person to wear them was Jen Mascaro (in fact, at the website it shows her ramming heads with Katia sometime last year), and she ended up leaving the team.

Then, "Mama" Joy gets named the spokesperson and she ends up with a foot problem.

Kim wore one during the first game - no physical problems, but it appeared that she got burned on Meinert's goal (of course, Maren might have been someone elses responsibility! - in that case, she's getting 'burned' by getting blamed!)

At first I thought that Pags was wearing one, but if so she was using it just to hold her hair back, as it wasn't on her forehead...

Of course, maybe the headbands actually brought the team luck! Hey, they didn't lose 5-0! ;)

Maybe they addled the ref's brain so much that she decided not to call penalties on those two times when Breakers fell down inside the box (on the other hand, it could be because earlier in the game Breakers went down in the box when they lost the ball, causing the ref to ignore those later cases where a penalty might have been justified.)
