Allie Kemp-Sullivan notched a first-half hat-trick to pace the Spirit to the victory. Release Summary Ø Kemp-Sullivan scored in the 20th, 36th and 39th minutes. Ø Jenny Mascaro (50’) and Shauna Rohbock (73’) also scored goals for San Diego. The Spirit exploded for three goals in a 19-minute span after controlling the early part of the first half against LMU. The first of Kemp-Sullivan’s three goals came off an assist from Sherice Anders in the 20th minute. Anders found Kemp-Sullivan at the top of the box on the left wing, she then calmly slid a ground shot past the charging LMU goalkeeper. Sixteen minutes later, Kemp-Sullivan scored on a similar play to her first goal after collecting a pass from defender Amy Sauer to stake San Diego to a 2-0 lead. Taking a Jenny Mascaro through-ball from the midfield, Kemp-Sullivan finished her three-goal barrage in the 39th minute by scoring a goal off a rebound shot from eight yards away, after the LMU goalkeeper saved her initial shot. The second half featured goals from Mascaro in the 50th minute and Shauna Rohbock in the 73rd minute. Mascaro headed in a cross at the near post from Jen Lalor-Nielsen, while Rohbock finished the scoring with a well-placed shot past the goalkeeper. The Spirit defense was not tested much throughout the match, as they held LMU to only four shots on goal. Goalkeepers Shelley Finger and Erin Fahey recorded the clean sheet for San Diego. As SpiritPR said, the 2nd half Spirit defense didn't really give LMU much of a chance to test Erin. Shelley Finger only faced a few shots, and the one that had the most chance of scoring was when she herself mis-hit a pass in the 20th minute and had the good luck to see the LMU forward take a shot that hit the far post and bounce out to a Spirit defender. Allie Kemp looked really good - the LMU made some really good saves, or she could have had another three goals!
I've finished my long post on the game, and placed it here: http://spiritedsoccer.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=213
Tsunami thanks for the update. I wondered who was taking notes at midfield. A couple of observations: 1st half 4-4-2 formation, Amy dominated play out of the back, spent almost entire half on left side. Allie seemed to be in her own world up top. Nobody could stay with her. Midfield didn't seem to get many touches. Shelley's distribution out of the back was a bit shaky. 2nd half 3-5-2 formation, moving Amy up into midfield, Flo holding. Led to more midfield work. Jen-Jen combo for goal early in half was pretty. Lalor-Nielsen juked the LMU back, went right around her and put it on a hard charging Mascaro's head. Great combo. Fahey didn't seem to get much work. Had to leave early! Drat! Great afternoon for a game! Hope the rain holds off on Saturday.
Thanks for your input on the game. As to Saturday, the weather service indicates that there is a 50% chance of rain from 9am on, with temperatures in the lower 60s. I don't know if I'll be able to do much note taking with that sort of weather...
