Hi folks, Just wanted to let anybody whose interested know that knm1172 and I will be heading to an English Pub in Pasadena before we head over to the match. We will be in our Spirit gear if anyone cares to meet up with us. Here's the info: BECKHAM PLACE 77 W. Walnut St., Pasadena (626) 796-3399 Come on, how can you resist that name! An English pub called Beckham is just begging to be investigated by the likes of us. disclaimer: it could be terrible for all we know, we've never been to it before. But the internet guide I found it on gave it 3 out of 4 stars.
The tickets were only $13 for the complete doubleheader if you asked for 'AYSO' tickets. (Call the LA Galaxy ticket office: 1-877-GALAXY to ask about the 'AYSO' tickets). Don't know if they still have those tickets available. Ticketmaster shows the regular prices to be $13 to $33.
I get the WUSA Insider (as well as lab99 I believe) cuz we are subscribers to Soccer America. However I have not received a new Soccer America since last November or so . I forward my newsletter to folks. If you would like to be added to my mailing list just PM me with your email address and I'll add you.
i think also if you say something about the csl, the club league around so cal, you get 13 dollar tickets too. how did it go?
Spirit Press Release on the Game Spirit 1, Charge 1 Spirit Will Regroup for Training Camp in Early November SPIRIT TIES PHILADELPIA CHARGE, 1-1, IN EXHIBITION AT THE ROSE BOWL; ROHBOCK SCORES LATE EQUALIZER AFTER EARLY PK GOAL BY BENSON PASADENA, Calif. (Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002) - The San Diego Spirit tied the Philadelphia Charge, 1-1, in an exhibition at the Rose Bowl as Shauna Rohbock scored an 86th minute equalizer. The match was played as the first half of a doubleheader that also featured Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy against the San Jose Earthquakes. It was the first ever MLS-WUSA doubleheader for the Spirit and the first ever WUSA match at this world famous stadium, site of the 1999 Women's World Cup Final. The Spirit had far more of the play against a Charge team that was missing more key players than San Diego, but despite a 20-5 shot margin and several good chances inside 10 yards, the Spirit could not produce a goal until the waning minutes of the game. Lori Lindsey ran down a ball in the right corner and sent a cross into the middle that was cleared by the Charge. The ball bounced at the top of the penalty area for Shannon Boxx to crack a blistering half volley into goalmouth traffic. The ball deflected off the head of Rohbock, wrong-footing goalkeeper Maite Zabala, before it dropped into the right corner to tie the game. "I saw Boxxy was going to hammer it and I thought it was going to hit me right in the stomach," said Rohbock. "I braced myself and managed to get a head on the ball for the flick." The Charge had just three shots on goal in the match, with the Spirit putting half of their 20 on net, but the Charge scored first in the 22nd minute. Midfielder Mary-Frances Monroe got behind the Spirit defense in the left side of the penalty area and dribbled one-on-one at Spirit goalkeeper Carly Smolak. Monroe rounded Smolak, who chopped her down, earning a yellow card, and a penalty kick, which Jenny Benson buried into the right corner. The Spirit had a great chance to tie the game at the end of the first half as Julie Fleeting did well to work herself free of Jen Tietjen on the left wing before bending a cross into the middle. Mercy Akide collected the ball on her chest and was pulled down by her jersey, earning a penalty for the Spirit. Shannon MacMillan took the shot, but hit it just to the right of Melissa Moore, who smothered the ball to keep the Spirit off the board. At the stroke of halftime, Fleeting got behind the Charge defense and dribbled to the near post before cutting a short pass back to Jenny Mascaro, but she scuffed her shot. The ball rebounded up in the air and Fleeting did well to head it back over Moore, but the ball was cleared off the goal line by a Charge defender as it was falling into the net. It was one of numerous quality chances from close range that the Spirit did not covert on the night. Spirit interim coach Tom Tate played all 18 players on his roster while the Philadelphia head coach Mark Krikorian played all 16 players on the Charge roster. "We came out a little sluggish in the first half," said Tate. "We settled down a bit in the second half and got behind them a few times early in the game and late in the game and we should have gotten at least one or two goals out of those chances. With played some new players and were a little disjointed at times, but we got to evaluate some players and definitely played well for some good stretches of the game." The Charge did an excellent job of holding possession after the break, content to knock the ball around with the one goal lead, leaving substitute Spirit goalkeeper Jaime Pagliarulo unbothered in second half, but Rohbock got the Spirit's deserved goal four minutes from time. The match marked the end of a week-long off-season training camp for the Spirit. The team will regroup in early November for another week of camp in the final off-season action of the year. The score was a 1-1 draw. Small write-up from the Spirit site (it says there will be a full report later): http://www.sandiegospirit.com/325355.html Philly scored on a first half PK that seemed odd. Smo was charging for the ball as was the Philly player and Smo slid for it, Charge player went for it, Charge player went down (not injured or anything, just fell over Carly's arms when Carly slid and reached for the ball). Ref yellow-carded Smo - very goofy call. I guess Smo's alternative would have been to just let her have the ball and not go for the save. Goofy. Later the Spirit had a PK (I can't remember what it was called for - maybe someone else can help on that). Mac took it but Moore came up with a big save. Towards the end of the match, Boxxy had a great shot that Bobsled apparently deflected in for the tie. Spirit was down in Philly's half of the field a lot in the first half and frequently in the second. Isabelle Harvey looked VERY VERY good. I thought she looked familiar and I read in the write-up that she plays for the Canadian Nats so maybe that is why. I wouldn't mind if, based on what we saw tonight, the Spirit signed her up - of course, it was only one (technically meaningless) match.
Re: Spirit Press Release on the Game Is six the max field subs allowed in an exhibition match? I do believe Harvey played for the Trojans and has served as an assistant coach with 'em.
What the press release diplomatically didn't say was that the reason Monroe was behind the defense on the play that led to the penalty kick was that she was offside by 5 yards. The linesman on that side of the field was 10 yards out of position and thus blew the call... On the other side of the field, the linesperson there went to the other extreme - waving her flag for offside infractions that didn't exist.
Why that's positively Saskia Webber-esque (remember her wiping out Pichon in the first PHL-NY game in April which led to Kelly Smith's game-winning PK?) How many of the 32,874 came out to see the first game (roughly, IYO's?); no doubt the largest crowd the Charge ever played in front of. And Moore stoning Mac on the PK; maybe a preview of Portland next weekend (knock on wood) Paul
If I had to guess, at the start of the game there were maybe 4-5,000. By half time, maybe triple that., By games end, closer to 20,000. But I'm not good at that sort of estimating. Maybe one of the others that were there could give a better estimate.
Mac still kicks ass Hey...mac meant to miss that PK! She was just testing the waters for the other girls in case the chance arose again...."Alright, now you see not to go left"
Is six the max field subs allowed in an exhibition match?
In an exhibition game the sub rules can be anything they want them to be. For the Breakers-Freedom match, the Boston roster listed seven subs while the Washington roster listed only five (two 'keepers!). With about 17 minutes left there was a Freedom player who was allowed to re-enter the match.
isabelle harvey ahhh! i know i'm super late to post this, but i did not realize that isa played in this game! how come i did not know this!!!!! lol i believe she and aaron know each other well, therefore maybe that's why she was invited as a special guest player!!! and YES, i think ISA is an AWESOME PLAYER!!! as fear mentioned, she played her college ball at USC, and was a 4time all-american...she currently is the head coach at cal state LA, and i remember her telling me she'd love to play with the WUSA and crack a lineup....however, she would be considered a foreign player. i also remember her saying that her best chance in playing in the WUSA is when she gets her green card (which she has been waiting for FOREVER), but would that mean she won't count as a foreign player if she had a green card? she lives full time in LA, and i'm soooo happy to hear that the spirit used her for this match!! she's super versatile...she can play in the defense, midfield or up front if you want, and is super quick and by far one of the fittest players on team canada. she's a great left sided player, and has tremndous work rate and heart. she's a small, quick, and fast player that always seems to be in the right place at the right time. she was one of the trojans' highset goal scorers through her career, and she was converted to play in right back with team canada a few years ago. also, isa plays with a local WPSL team- the southern california ajax, and was named as an all-star for the WPSL this pass summer. overall, i think she's a great, great player, and i cannot say enough about her! hopefully this is a sign of good things to come for her in the future!!! more about isa can be found here: http://gobigred.sinfree.net i love talking about my canucks! elaine
Although I had thought that they might have been assigned week-long contracts like a few players were during the season, the three players were invited a 'guests' because they were at a tryout camp that the team had had. I hadn't heard how players were able to get into the camp itself.
