Did Spector really make the bench? I don't see him listed on Soccernet or BBC.

Spector not on the bench for this one.

on that note how the HELL did Ashley Young miss that?? wow West Ham dodge a bullet there!! off the woodwork with Green beat!

Collison is an impressive homemade product for West Ham. Neil is embarrassing right now, then again his man is Young and he's made better defenders than Neil look worse. and West Ham just go up for a counter, Bellamy with some great work and Cole bumbles it again. What a waste of space he is.

He would've been better off trying to beat Green right away...he gave himself a tough angle with his weaker foot. Bellamy is looking really good.

Behrami unloads a cannon from distance, Friedel does well to stop it. West Ham get a foul in a dangerous area as Friedel tends to his wall.....

Off the wall, and Villa counter. Robert Green, pretending he's an American keeper, makes a terrific double save. Capello's watchful eye in the stands.

If i see James in between the pipes for england i will laugh my ass off, especially when Green keeps on turning in performances like this, and James turns in performances like he did today.

into the wall and Villa run a counter that leads to two saves by Green on some bad shots.

I can't believe it's still 0-0. You have to be more clinical than this to grab 3 points away from home. With the way Bellamy is playing I could see West Ham taking this one in the 2nd half.

wow Friedel is lucky Cole is spectacular fail, that was a great cross and another wasted chance.

you have to think Zola is thinking about putting DiMichelle out there, and bringing Tristan up from the reserves with the way Cole is playing.

I guess it's West Ham's turn to miss a bunch of chances.

You have to think someone will get one on target soon.

Completely underserved flukey goal. Milner has been terrible, but as they say, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

It ends 1-0. Friedel was MOTM, with an assist from Carlton Cole.

Neither team attacked with much conviction today, but I'd say that Friedel still managed to stand out the most in making three or four tough stops. Villa's goal makes you think that this is a season where the Force is strong with them.

And from the player ratings on skysports.com, Friedel gets a big, fat 9.

This, as Aston Villa head into the top three of the Premiership, at least for the moment...

Villa's next match: hosting Arsenal on Boxing Day.

West Ham didn't deserve to lose this one, but with a clueless Chelsea man as our manager insisting on picking a clueless Chelsea man as main striker it's to be expected. Friedel was excellent, flukey goal but you make your own luck and Zola deserves to be sacked tomorrow for continuing to start with a strike partnership that is simply feeble. We do have other options, we had two other strikers on the bench. Sears, a hundred times the footballer Cole will ever be don't even make the bench. The problem for Sears is he's West Ham and Zola is Chelsea and will only pick his former Chelsea team mate. I've had enough of the clueless grinning chimp in case anyone was left in any doubt. Anyway, well done Villa for going third in the table.
