Any thoughts? Does Johnny play in the cup? Or...Will he be rested so that he is ready for the Bolton match at the weekend?

I bet he plays. This match is ideal for him anyway, and if he's going to play this weekend, he could use the time on the field to settle his nerves and get ready.

I hope he plays because Chelsea is a tough foe. But, if he plays, I don't think he will this weekend.

The best scenario for Spector long-term is probably for Powell to start today. But then, I suppose scoring two goals in a 2-0 win over Chelsea would probably get him back in the line-up again too. ;)

why wouldn't he play this weekend?

Steven Gerrard played his Carling Cup match. I doubt that would rule him out of the weekend match

Am I wrong or did Gerrard not miss the match last weekend?

he didn't, Morientes and Hypia did though. As did Harry Kewell.

Spector is a big boy now. He shouldn't be in the sport if he can't handle 3 matches in 7 days

You're missing my point a bit so I'm guessing I never made one. My point was meant to be that Charlton have a deep squad and Curbs has to use competitions like these to get the guys who play in deeper positions on the field.

my rebuttal is that I'm guessin gthat Spector is in a similar situation as Giussepi Rossi. No Spector hasn't said he was going to play for Germany, but he is a youhtful, star prospect who needs 1st team action. As many minutes as possible at this point, is whats going to help Charlton down the road because Spector will be very helpful.

A bit of left turn here....

how Ironic is it that Charlton are ahead of United in the table? and how would have that it was Charlton who are chasing the Automatic Champion's League spot directly, and it would be United 5 places a drift?

I actually thought Charlton were going to be very good this season, based upon the talent they assembled and the preseason they had. But, this has been a pleasant surprise. I keep thinking how interesting the Premiership race would be if they had gotten the 6 points they should have from Fulham and Spurs.

hmmm. Given the way they've been handling Powell, I'd spin this to say that JS is in line for the start in his place this weekend. I'd still think that he ought to play both, to help break him in a bit more.

If Spector doesn't start this weekend...well, let's just assume he starts this weekend.

In extra time. 1-1. No Spector, all three subs used.

I'm pretty sure Spector plays this weekend now. I doubt they'll run Powell out there for 90 minutes after playing 120 today.

Either Chelsea are hitting a stretch of poor form (by their standards) or Charlton are for real. Maybe both.

Go look at Soccernet's Gamecast for ET; 8-0 shots for the period.

I think Chelsea will be just fine.

Chelsea loses for the first time this season. It really is a shame that Spector didn't get to play in this memorable win.

I'd expect nothing less from the heavily favored home team in a knockout cup game heading towards pks.

Or maybe neither. Two draws in a row (the first of which involved a bogusly-denied offside goal) is hardly evidence of much. As for Charlton, they're good but not outstanding.

Yes, they've dropped 2 points TOTAL on the season in league play. What a sad, sad team they have become . . .

It wouldn't be a great endorsement of his play last weekend.
