Where are the details re: % of the revenue from parking and concessions? Are we trying to get any of those? If so I might actually buy food there.
I would be thinking they would be getting priority scheduling for the 2003 season as part of the deal--the only issue would come fall when the gridiron team plays, pending the release of the Quakes schedule..
I just read yesterday in SJ Murky that SJSU is negotiating with Grambling State (Div 1-AA) to play at Spartan on August 23, 2001. That's very early. We may be seeing those lines a lot sooner than last year.
Sorry, kids...CyberRays released their schedule today...they got the "priority scheduling" as advertised earlier. They took 3 prime Saturday nights early in the season (April 5, April 19, May 10) before reverting to their "traditional" Sunday afternoon fixtures through the summer months. They also cowboy'd-up for 2 midweek fixtures (June 25 and August 6). They are away for the July 4th weekend, though.
For me personally, the Quakes not playing at home on those dates isn't that big a deal - as a matter of fact: April 5 = It would've been nice to have a Quakes home game that day, but the lack of one doesn't really hurt much (and it assures of yet another home game later in the season). April 19 = I'm actually glad that there's no Quakes home game that day, as I have to be out of town that weekend... as a matter of fact, I'm also hoping that there's no Quakes home game the following weekend as well, since I must be out of town that weekend too. May 10 = This is sort of a missed opportunity for the Quakes as it's Mother's Day weekend, but it's not disasterous.       And it's a good sign that Spartan Stadium is open on July 4 for the Quakes, although it would only be worth it if they once again had a fireworks display after the game.       GO EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
I think this is good for the quakes as it most likely means the home opener is April 26, 2002, the week after Easter Weekend. It gives them more time to sell the opening game.
I think that given (a) our previous problems with fireworks and surrounding buildings and (b) the SJ Giants fireworks shows on July 4 & 5 -- their two biggest gates of the year taking up valuable auxiliary parking, that the Quakes stand a good chance to be on the road on the Independence day weekend.
More likely the opener will be April 12. Whether it's priority scheduling for the Rays or just both teams had an equal chance to apply for dates, it's no big deal. I expect the Quakes' home dates have largely been chosen and approved already; they're just waiting for the entire MLS schedule to be finalized. The Rays have three early-season Saturday games, but that still leaves April 12 & 26 and May 3, 17 & 31 avaiailible to the Quakes. Whether the Quakes will be able to schedule on Saturdays of the same weekends that the Rays play on Sunday remains to be seen, but there are only 5 such weekends.
Not announced was that the team would change its name to the Cleveland Steamers even though the team will remain in San Jose.
Saturday conflicts with the CyberRays April 5. April 19. May 10. That's it. All CyberRays games are scheduled for 7 p.m. Pacific Time, which means that on the 19th and/or the 10th, the Earthquakes could very well have a 1 p.m. ESPN2 game at Spartan (the April 5th matchup is already set). Hey, I've heard of worse ideas. Spring Saturday, not too hot (there may be conflicts with local youth leagues, though). From my POV, I like it as an out-of-town trip: Tailgate in the morning, watch some soccer, tailgate for four more hours, watch some more soccer, then have someone pour me into a taxi and get me to my cousin's. I like that idea, although my cousin might beg to differ. If you're worried about -- or, like me, hoping for -- weekends where the two teams will be playing at Spartan, the purple and orange have home games at Spartan on the Sundays of June 8, July 13, 20 and 27 and August 10. There are also Wednesday games on June 25 and August 6, although I don't imagine too many people will be upset at losing Wednesday dates. I'm having a hunch I might be needing my sunscreen sometime this July. I'd like to suggest a home game for July 26 -- it'd give me a chance to catch the Gilroy Garlic Festival as well, which I've had a hankering to go visit for some time now. Oh, if you want to check the 'Rays schedule, it's posted here on our board. People may now commence discussion or panic, according to their preferences.
Re: Re: Spartan Stadium press release       Better that date than April 26 (for me, at least)!       GO EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
      AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!       GO EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Isn't there a dance company called the Cleveland-San Jose Ballet? Why not the Cleveland-San Jose Steamers?
I thought the Cleveland half of the ballet company pulled out. And it's now Ballet San Jose. If I remember correctly.
The tentative Quakes schedule I've seen has three Wednesday games (only one of them at home) and the rest on Saturdays. I don't know any times yet. Unfortunately, I can't mention specific dates; they'll probably change somewhat anyway. I think it looks pretty good, though.
We'll believe it when we see the Quakes sked... it really does look good since all the games will be on weekends here, except for that one mentioned... Most of the Rays games are on Sundays, with the exception of the first 3 home games of the season... I would best think right now (until the Quakes make it official) that the Quakes could have some games stacked around the later stretch which would make it not too much of a conflict with the Rays... All that's left is that they spend Memorial Day on the road--I'm hitting Carnaval again and the Samba Line... Happy Holidays!
