I'm usually a pretty optimistic person but Weston's prospects look depressing... There just seems to be so much negativity attached to him for some reason for someone that has largely performed well at Juve.

Eh. He's still on post-copa vacation, so I'm not surprised at the lack of news.

Nah - it's not that bad given his stint at Leeds. Mostly just no, or if we have to make sophie's choice, pick the Yank.

Fat and out of shape doesn't play well in Italy. I remember from years ago that Italian coaches were very fanatical about how players care for their bodies. And let's be honest, Wes looks out of shape and he played like rubbish in the Copa. So "for some reason" is for an obvious reason.

If you think Wes looked "fit and in-shape" at Juventus during the season, but "fat and out of shape" at the Copa, you're only seeing what you want to see. There simply was not enough time between the camps for Wes to gain significant weight while maintaining his fitness levels. The caloric intake he would've had to maintain coupled with literally not moving a muscle would've incapacitated him at camp. As it stands, he started a friendly literally 14 days after his last match for Juve and played 71 minutes.

Yeah, unless he is undergoing some sort of medical treatment or literally sat in his room eating non-stop off the Elvis menu, there's no way Wes went from a very decent 90+ minutes in a hard-fought game v Roma on 5/5, followed by a mediocre, but still active 60 minute performance on 5/12, followed by another 90+ minute hectic Coppa win for Juve on 5/15 to "fat and out of shape" in time to affect transfer talks at all. Juve letting everyone know he's not in their plans when he has less than 1 year left on his contract is hanging out a "clearance - any offer considered" sign. He will move near the end of the window, when Juve decides they need to off-load his salary - or he will be with Juve again when they realizes he's cheaper as cover than being sold.

It's rare that two posts in a row make in here make so much sense. Not sure where all of this negativity is coming from.

Did you notice that Juve had modest interest in resigning him? His play dropped off quite a bit toward the end of the year. He wasn't stellar in last 1/3 of year.

I do not agree with that assessment, 2 of his best games were in March, and when it came time for the cup finals, he started. Juve had been planning to fire Allegri and reset the squad well before the end of the season, the decision to modestly pursue an extension is not "because he's fat", lol.

Wes may not have been the fittest or most effective player in Serie A, but Juve started him, played him 90 on 5/5, started him on 5/12, and started and played him 90 in the most important match (at that point) of Juve's season, on 5/15, while having Miretti, Weah, Kostic and the Argie kid on the bench - and actually subbing Miretti and Weah in... but not for Wes.

It's not like Wes was out there looking like vintage CR7 or anything, but the idea that he's not yet set his move cause "fat and not effective" seems a bit... overwrought. Villa reportedly wanted him, as have a couple of others. It seems like the biggest issue is a guy in the last year of his contract, who, between him and his club, want too much money. Juve will drop the price at some point, or they don't really want to move him that badly and he'll play out his contract here like Rabiot did and move someplace next summer.

He was dropped when Allegri was fired. It's not like he went from world class to ass in a day like you're making out would have to be the case for his weight to be an issue.

And so there is no other explanation for this other than "Weston Mckennie is fat"? Do you think its normal for a club to fire their manager with 2 matches remaining in the season AFTER he's won the club silverware?

He was also hurt with a shoulder injury for a large portion of that and played through it. It would be pretty unfair to ding him for that.

well, the bottom line is that Juve wasn't that interested in him. Put whatever interpretation you want on that.

Nico Schira (Tier 2-ish) reports again that Wes wants to sign for a club that plays in the Champions League.

Romeo Agresti (Tier 1) Juve is giving Wes and Szceszny more time off after CA/Euros to rest and figure out their club situation and won't be joining the team in Germany. He didn't specify for how long. Hopefully, something can be sorted out soon. Wes is entering his prime years, he needs to be playing.

Aston Villa qualified to play in this year's CL. The list is quite limited; more so, if one doesn't have top 5 league and Euro passport.

Has there been a shift with Euro football regarding salary and FFP? Not hearing of the splashy big transfer fees. There's more talk about swap deals and lower FFP player value via longer term contracts.

    McKennie news:

Reportedly left out of Juve German pre-season tour. "Arthur Melo, Mattia De Sciglio, Filip Kostic, Arkadiusz Milik, Weston McKennie and Wojciech Szczesny are not going to be part of the group, so will remain at the Continassa training complex in Turin.

Of those players, Arthur, De Sciglio, Kostic and Milik are carrying injuries, while McKennie and Szczesny were given extra time off after international duty."

Multiple sites reporting Everton offer. (as always, just reading stuff on the webz.)

    https://www.goodisonnews.com/2024/0...for-weston-mckennie-he-wants-160000-per-week/

(origin of the Everton article, but it's in some weird language.)

It is kinda funny that 160k is considered outrageous, but not 20 mill for a player Juve is going to lose on a free in 10 months... Everton could pay Wes 160k for a couple years with 20 mill.... Guess we'll see how badly Juve need Wes off their books. lol

I think the articles are mixing up Euros and Pounds. Wes's salary demands are most likely around 5 million Euros, which was about what he earned while at Leeds. The 20 mill is likely Juventus's ask for a transfer fee.

Transfer fees is the way the ECA teams work to compensate each other from player development. It's not that different from US sports when a trade of an established starter for draft compensation occurs. The team that developed the established starter is getting out of an expensive contract while netting the difference from what it has to pay a new rookie.

Wes' salary demands may put within the top 5 compensated players at Everton. At Leeds, he was a top 3 paid player, but was unhappy with the fan reaction to his play / worth.

Yeah, the 160k is LBS - that was me conflating it. So it would be closer to 190k Euro if that number is correct.

Transfer fees, of course, are completely negotiable and when you tell the footie world you don't want a player, and they are inside the last year of their contract, but you still hold out for a decent fee... you're not really setting yourself up to maximize your ROI. My guess is Juve has to cut their transfer fee ask (probably making it up in sell-on) if they want out from under Wes' s salary. But we shall see.

When British sources say e.g. 160k/week... is that for a calendar year? Or the playing season? Divided by 52? or ~38?

So rare for a Yank to be among the highest paid at any club.
