The Southern Conference tournament final was cancelled due to rain and unsafe playing conditions. Furman had already made it to the final and were going to play the winner of VMI/Davidson, which was also cancelled. Furman gets the automatic bid because they were the highest seed left in the tournament.

So...Davidson doesn't get a chance to get to the final and face Furman again. And they lose a chance to win the automatic bid. A good year for the program, but it has to be disappointing to not even get a chance to win the conference tournament. Furman definitely deserves the bid for winning the regular season, but it seems there could have been some sort of solution that didn't require cancellation of the whole SoCon tournament.

    Any thoughts?

Yes, that's a tough way to end it, even though it seems fair given the circumstances.

As to a solution, I know it's probably not practical to have multiple tournaments at the SAS Soccer Park in Cary, NC. But that field can take a tremendous amount of rain and still hold up. I've heard that the drainage system there can handle something absurd like 11 inches of rain per hour and still remain playable. (Or maybe it was per day. :) ) In either case, it can handle a bunch of water.

Considering that Cary, NC is five hours from Charleston, SC and all the logistical problems that the teams, tournament directors, sponsors and everyone else would face, I don't think Cary would be an option.

And with the U-20 National Team using Blackbaud Stadium, I guess that was out of the question. It is a tough way for Davidson to go down, but if there was no place else in Charleston to go, I guess they did what they had to do.

Furman definitely deserved a bid, which they would have gotten had they not won and I was at the Furman/Davidson game last week and it was complete Furman domination. Final was 3-0 and could have easily been 5-0, but the Davidson keeper saved two PKs.

Anyway, my money would have been on Furman to get another shutout victory and move on to the tourney.

Now, I'm sure the selection committee will find some way to hold this advancement against Furman and not give them a seed or even host a match, which they definitely deserve both.

I agree that Furman is probably the better team, but Davidson deserved their shot at them again, settle it on the field. I don't have any other solutions to the problem, other than have the selection commitee say the winner of the Furman/Davidson game will play at whatever school, and play the final on Monday. Or even move the selection show to Tuesday. I realize all the logistical problems this would create, but aren't we doing all of this for the players anyway? Just hate to see it end like that...

The patriot league final was originally supposed to be played at a field (i dont know which one) but it was unplayable due to ice. What did they do? They found another field to play the final on. That is really a brilliant idea that apparently no one in the Socon administration thought of. Im sure there are plenty of fields in the Charleston area to play on. Its sad to see that Davidson, a very hardworking team, doesnt get a chance to redeem themselves against Furman. They can hope for a slim at large chance, but there had to be a better way to handle this situation.

You all forget. Davidson had not even played VMI yet.

Had they played VMI, who had upset App. State, in bad field conditions, it would have been a toss up.

The result may not have gone Davidson's way.

Yes, that's an obvious option. But, according to officials at the match, any site they might use has to be registered beforehand with NCAA/SoCon as a tournament-approved pitch, and that, of course, is not a last minute option.

Well it does seem logical that a field should be pre-registered to be played on. Obviously the patriot league had thought ahead enough to do this, and maybe the Socon should have too. I just don't find this to be a valid excuse for two teams, Davidson and VMI to have their seasons ended and any tournament hopes dashed because of poor planning. There had to be something the Socon could have done to prevent this from happening. Also, I wonder if they would have cancelled it had College of Charelston still been alive.
