I hope I do not get beaten up for this , but has anyone noticed the path that SK would have to take to get to the semis. It seems as they got a good deal qualifying in second from their group! They first get to play Uruguay, which as we have seen are a very decent team but probably one of the weaker sides south America has to offer ( and that’s probably not saying much). If they get through that then they either get the first place of group C ( USA, ENG, ALG, SVN) or second place of group D ( GER, AUS, SRB, GHA). The ways thing look right now and we will know for sure tomorrow morning they will either play ENG, USA or GHA. I believe SK can beat any of those teams if they play their A game and we might see them in the semis again.

Anyone agree with this assessment? I just thought it was interesting.

It's not outside the realms of possibility but I and most serious observers would cast doubt on South Korea's chances of passing the mighty Socceroos in the QFs ;)

"its not happening until it really happen"

I am not saying it has to happen, I am saying that the probablity is high. It is obvious that nothing will happen until the games are played. I would rather have an opinion on the statement I made than a trite statement like that one.

I really wish Australia all the luck in the world, and it would be nice to see them go through. They certainly have a good possibility of going through , did really mean to diminish their abilities by what I said in the post :)

Pipe dream, but it certainly is an easier pathway than crossing the paths of, well, any of the winners of groups G and H...

I think USA has the best chance to top Group C, who is about equal to korea in team strength in my opinion. But the other side is either germany or ghana. Korea wont stand a chance against germany, period, and ghana will beat korea unless they self-implode over their FA laundering all the player's money, as african teams like to do.

but first of all, i think korea has 1/3 chance of going past uruguay.

I posted this in another thread, but if you look at groups C & D, England sits in 3rd place in group C and will most likely finish 2nd or 3rd, meaning Slovenia or USA get 1st. Germany will either finish 1st or 3rd (2nd is possible but is unlikely). Hence, we're likely to get Slovenia/USA vs. Ghana/Serbia. And yes, none of those four scare me.

But we need to get past Uruguay first. Not an easy task, though many posters seem to think we have a great chance given the styles the teams play.

If SK fix the central defense, maybe they got a chance.

South Korea has been underperforming in groups. If they can fix tactics and tighten defense they have a good shot at it. But in knock-out tournaments anything can happen.

If we beat Uruguay, then it's either the US or Ghana. All three teams are beatable. This is the perfect scenario. I have a good feeling we will make the semi's. If we make it, there's a good chance we'll face one of Brazil,Spain or Netherland.

A lot of Americans(radio shows and etc) are saying that South Korea will be easy to beat if they face Korea in the quarterfinals... tch..

Lets not ahead of ourselves. We just reached the round of 16 with Nigeria missing several sitters. If we end up beating Uruguay, that's when we should start talking about the semis.

I'm not a big fan of making bold predictions, but we match up a lot better against both the US and Ghana than we do against Uruguay.

The US right now are a defensive team that doesn't play much defense.

    I see two groups here:

One is really scared to jinx anything so will do whatever they can to lower expectations to almost pathetic levels to not feel let down

The other is very hopeful, excited bordering a state of euphoric myopia thinking we can quite possibly reach the semis+.

I fall right in the middle. Focus one match at a time. Anything can happen.

But boy are we in the better side of the bracket!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was thinking the same thing. With each passing round there is no "easy" team, as its fair to say that they all earned the opportunity to get to the next round. But in theory you would like your chances from the group of Uruguay, US, and Ghana more than your chances vs Germany, England, or Mexico on the flip side.

Its also nice that assuming we get to the semis, we will only have to face one of Brazil, Spain, or Netherlands instead of having to have gone through two of them just to get to the semis.

Lastly, I think its fair to say that the current potential route to the semis is "easier" than the route we had to take in 2002 (Italy, Spain).

To be honest, I would've preferred to play England or Mexico than Uruguay if we had the choice.

Who do you guys think will win between US and Ghana. They are very equally matched I don't know who to vote for if we get passed. It's a slim chance but who knows.

Uruguay have a very impressive midfield. Suarez and Forlan scares me. They have 2 good wingers to support them too

Ghana, unlike your average African side, is highly functional from a tactical standpoint and can play some smash-mouth defense. It's their habit of being wasteful on the other end that's been hurting them.

Surprisingly, Essien's absence hasn't been much of a factor so far.

    Hell no. :)

I don't think I would ever be able to live down losing to the US in a WC quarterfinal, but let's see how we do agaisnt Uruguay first.

Donavon has been having one hellva world cup this year. He has been their savior throughout the world cup. I could see that happening.

Don't doubt Tim Howard either, he made a brillant save and then helped with the counter attack to score the winning goal. I'm sure the USA is PUMPED and going with some momenteum and Ghana will have their handsful.

I think Korea-Uruguay and USA-Ghana are in an ideal situation to go deep into the tournament.

I'm crossing my fingers that Korea will tighten up the defence, keep the games close and captialise on the counter attacks much like the USA did for their winning goal.
