In Mexico, they had elections for the lower house and about half the state governors (also other local elections)

While AMLO lost his supermajority in congress, his party picked up 11 new Gubernatorial seats.

So a bit of a mixed bag, they can not pass constitutional amendments on their own any more, but controlling more states is a very good thing for his party.

His party did also lose control of a lot of the Mexico city sections (but they still control the mayorship.

    In non election news.

Here is what the Argentinian president thinks of Brazilian and Mexican people (I am sure he thinks the same of other Latin countries with mixed people.

The biggest democracy in Latin America votes for President today.

A run off is possible if no one gets 50%+.

Yep. These are the polls 2 days before elections.

And even if Lula wins in the runoff, Bolsonaro candidates have gained many unexpected seats in Congress.

Yeah, even best case Lula will have a hard time getting things passed in congress, worse case Bolsonaro pulls off a comeback and wins the second round and gets a friendly congress.

Many people want strong leadership against history of Gov. corruption (including ... Lula and PT), stronger fight against crime in the face of worsening public security, frustration with tax burden, and a fear that Brazil will go the way of Argentina and Venezuela if PT get their way.

Mainly Bolsonaro is not seen as a fascist when he is attacking Gov. institutions. He is seen as fighting corruption which is deeply ingrained into the system (which is true). So it's a very easy sell.

I can understand the want for people to see a flamethrower but surely the results should make people aware, but then Trump almost won re-election.

That is what populism does, on the right and the left.

In Venezuela, Chavez became very popular attacking the status quo. Corruption does exist, and sometimes populist use those frustrations to come to power.

The problem is when the people drink the kool aid and do not see the dangers of the populist.

Case in point, El Salvador, that dude is left wing economically but right wing in terms of crime, He just announced that he will run for re-election, even when the constitution in El Salvador prohibits it.

He is so popular that he will win.

Just to give an example, when Lula came into power, 2 years into his Presidency there was a scandal with Gov. contracts that were over invoiced along with vote buying payments to Congress men which involved many members of PT (his party). Now, it turns out the scheme started at state level before Lula and involved other parties as well, but it looks specially bad for parties that at its core claims to represent the "every day worker" and lower economic class.

Looks Lula will win over Bolsonaro by a hair thin margin. Looks like Bolsonaro picked up a lot of votes compared to the 1st round considering he lost by 5% then.

I didn't watched any of the debates except for the last one. It was a depressing shit show. As successful economy wise Brazil were in Lula's 8 years in the 2000's, he had nothing constructive to say. And Bolsonaro ... well, he is a clown. Makes Lula sound literate.

If it's close, will Bolsonaro actually concede?

    Are there recounts in Brazil?

I don't think there is recount. Voting in Brazil is 100% electronic. There is no paper trail. While the system is fast and efficient, there is no way to check the integrity of the election results via paper count.

Not sure about that. 2 days ago he said he would respect the election result.

There is a rumor being spread to Bolsonaro voters that the results will be overturned by the exposure of voting corruption by the military. Sounds like a CC of the Q / Trump narrative. But although I never believed that shit in the US, in Brazil I can't totally discredit it. Although I don't think the military is interested in running the country. And not with out backing from outside forces like in the 60s.

Yesterday and today truckers in Brazil blocked several of the country's highways in protest of the election results. Many can't accept Lula coming back to power and also cite election rigging. Many are asking for a military coup but the truckers have no real leadership.

Bolsonaro is completely MIA. Hasn't made any statements yet, but many in his coalition have accepted the result.

Biden and other allied countries were quick to congratulate Lula on his victory making sure to say it was a clean and fair election. Basically sending a message to Bolsonaro to not try any funny shit.

Putin and Xi also sent messages acknowledging Lula's win.
