It's still incredibly poor judgment. He was easily persuaded to take the rap by his moron teammate. He was a passenger in a car being driven at 125 mph by his moron teammate. Moron.
I think it is worse that he was letting someone else drive him around at 125 mph than him driving himself. You would think he would have learned his lesson of not putting his life in other peoples hands. Quit making excuses for him. He needs maturing.
He said himself he can't legally drive in France. He doesn't hold a French license. Additionally, Davies said he was in the back napping or laying down to be exact. When I sleep in a car I have no idea how fast that person is driving. Still dosen't change the stupidity of the incident just merely pointing out a few details.
Exactly but why now is Faty ready to fess up? Why didn't he just do it when they got pulled over. Bad judgement on both players. Even more for Davies since he doesn't have a French license so wouldn't that technically be driving without a valid license? Even though he lied and wasn't driving. Davies taking the heat for someone who has a suspended license is pretty bold and lying to police. All in what 30 seconds? This is just crazy.
This, of course, has a major hole to it. Police suspended Davies' license according to all initial reports the night of the incident. How does he not have a license but yet get it suspended anyway? If he doesn't have a French license, he would have been charged for driving without a license and likley would have been in more trouble (and probably wouldn't have agreed to cover for Faty). Faty asked Davies to cover for him since Faty thought he had a suspended license (how does one not know if their license is suspended), but why would Charlie do the same if he didn't have a license? Davies would have immediately gone to jail right then and there if he was driving 125mph without a license. That's what Faty was afraid of. The initial reports said police were going to suspend his license for six months. That means Davies had a license What gets me is that in the end, the lying to police may in fact get him into worse trouble.
I just can't emphasize too much how utterly stupid this move was. It doesn't matter if he was driving or not. Both scenarios put him in a very bad light. Whatever the case, this incident may have ruined his career. Fair or not, after these two incidents he now has a mark as an irresponsible and unprofessional player. Not only may he get jail time, but he may not get a contract extension from Sochaux, and he may get blackballed by other clubs. As Judge Judy says, "Beauty fades, but dumb is forever." It's looking more and more like Davies is another Mathis, i.e. a player of great promise who only disappoints in the end.
He probably had a license. Well, we owe Davies an apology, but still he lied to cover another guy. Plus, Faty is a coward, thinking Charlies' nationality would keep him more out of justice troubles than him. He'd got the good sense to reveal the truth. Both look like irresponsible lil' kiddies to me. "Not me ma'am I swear"
says here: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/soccer/10/09/davies.ap/index.html charlie needed a ride to paris, and faty was going there, so hitched a ride. charlie sez he was asleep in the passenger seat. said faty was panicky when pulled over and thought an american in france wouldn't get the rap faty would, especially since faty thought his license was suspended. said the windows were tinted, so the police couldn't see the switch. and sez police told faty his license was no longer suspended after they were hauled in. plausible? i suppose so. hardest stretch for me is the switch. i've never been in a Q7, but unless it has bench seats pushed way back, and the police were borderline incompetent, i don't see a switch that isn't noticed by the police. i really like charlie, and would love to believe this at face value, but i think the jury is still out. the only thing worse than doing something stupid is a half assed coverup.
Why do we owe Davies an appology? He claimed to be the driver of the car. We took him at his word. Also, it hasn't been proven that he wasn't the driver. This new story has holes and could have come to light a lot earlier. Also, Davies is still potentially in a lot of trouble. Maybe even more now than he was.
You don't have to switch seats, just driver's licenses. This is what Jacques Faty looks like. Not really similar, but with a bad enough picture and a policeman who isn't a soccer fan, maybe you could get by. Maybe the policeman noticed that something fishy was up, and that's why they got hauled in.
While this is certainly a disappointing incident, let's not go overboard. Players have done much worse and continued their careers. See, e.g., http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marlon_King and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joey_Barton If Charlie recovers the form he had prior to the incident last October, he'll find a place to play, regardless of what Sochaux does with respect to this situation. He's got a long way to go to run up a rap sheet like Marlon King*. *That rap sheet includes convictions for 14 offences, dating from 1997. He received fines, driving bans, community service sentences, a rehabilitation order and orders to pay compensation on convictions including: theft from a person and from a car, criminal damage, and attempting to obtain property by deception; fraudulent use of vehicle licence document, driving without insurance, speeding, drink driving; a wounding incident while playing amateur football, and two cases involving assault of young women rejecting his advances in the Soho area of London.
well he didn't drive. He just was part of lying to cover up the crime. Great he's like Nixon. First if you don't have a license what idiot decides, "oh i'll take the rap then." That makes no sense. "uh my license is supsended, I'll go to jail?" How about "Kiss my ass suspended, I have no license and i'll go to jail?" These guys aren't be the sharpest knives in the drawer to agree to that. Recklessness in driving is bad. This is intentional deception, quite stupid and reflects just as poorly if not more on his character.
Me thinks something is getting lost in this stories' translation. For the background, driving 140 KPH (=87 MPH) on certain well-maintained, excellent road surfaced, French toll autoroutes is very normal. Seeing sportscars "gros cylindres" wizzing past at 160 KPH (=@100 MPH) won't shock you. From there to 200 KPH (= @ 125 MPH) is still a big leap and definately dangerous to life, limb and "autrui" as the French say. Regardless of who was driving or the true rate of speed, still hard to fathom Charlie Davies, AFTER WHAT HE WENT THROUGH, puts himself in that vulnerable position! Not much else to say.
Let's see....he doesn't play now....he might go to jail for lying to the police...Sochaux will likely not play him anymore and not extend his contract... How will he recover his form again? At another club? Interviewer: "Tell me about your club career" Charlie: "Well I played 8 games with Sochaux..., scored 2 goals." Interviewer: "Hmm. Anything else?" Charlie: "Yes, I played a couple of seasons in the Allsvenskan for Hammarby." Interviewer: "Hmmm. Say, aren't you that guy who broke his leg and later went to jail? Hmm." <long pause> Interviewer: "Did you get the memo about the TPS cover sheets?"
Yes. Even if the worst case scenario happens (going to jail for lying to the French police) I have little doubt he will get another chance from some club, somewhere. Many other players have have done a hell of lot worse than Charlie and gotten another chance.
Steven Gerrard kicked some guy's ass in a bar over the remote control and didn't sit out a single match. Joey effing Barton is still playing professional soccer, FFS. And let's not get started on big-time American pro sports.
Exactly he will get a chance somewhere. Jamie Lawrence spent 4 years in prison for bank robbery and then signed for Sunderland. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kj1q-6WXtKw"]YouTube - From Prison to Premiership[/ame] Gavin Grant was accused of murder (twice) and still played for Wycombe and Bradford. He's now in prison after being found guilty.
Bad examples, since they were a lot better than Davies even before his accident; and he has yet to prove that he's come back from that accident. These counterexamples where someone thought "well, he's a headcase/criminal, but he's a good player so we'll give him a shot" don't apply, because right now, at this exact moment, Charlie Davies isn't a good player. We hope he will be again, but he hasn't shown that he *is right now* to anyone.
He started and played 68 minutes in a CFA game vs Auxerre reserves. http://www.fcsochaux.fr/fr/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=2118&Itemid=106
Assisted on game winner today. We won 2-0. My best outing yet! Feeling great and I'm so very close to 1st team action. Thank you all! Bless! How dare he get my hopes up. I wont be fooled.
