I know that soccer and professional wrestling have absolutely nothing in common. But, there is a connection between the two. Interestingly enough, several professional wrestlers from the not-too-distant past have had soccer backgrounds. Although I'm not talking about The Rock, Stone Cold, or Hulk Hogan here, several wrestlers were doing corner kicks and penalty kicks on a soccer field before they did dropkicks in the ring. Tommy Billington, who most wrestling fans know better as "The Dynamite Kid" from the then-WWF (now WWE) in the 1980s (he was one half of the British Bulldogs with the late Davey Boy Smith), was a soccer prodigy before he entered the squared circle. Thomas Boric, who later wrestled as Paul Diamond (and under a mask as "Kato"), was a goalkeeper for the Tampa Bay Rowdies of the NASL. Also, some of you might remember the Canadian Wolfman ("from the wilds of the Yukon...") who wrestled during the mid-1970s. He used to do something in the ring so ugly that they had to put a big "X" on the screen to keep fans from seeing it. He used to choke opponents on the mat to get them to submit, but used to do it in a way that was sickening to the eye. Anyway, the Wolfman was actually a Hungarian who had emigrated to Canada looking for work as a soccer player (had he been a few years younger, he could have played in the CSL! ;)). I remember World Class Championship Wrestling (the Von Erichs promotion) once used a player from a Dallas pro soccer team (I'm not sure that it was the Tornado) in an on-location interview with the late "Gentleman" Chris Adams (from England - it was he who actually trained "Stone Cold" Steve Austin to be a pro wrestler). It's interesting that some soccer players turned in their cleats for wrestling boots. Anyway, does anyone else know any prominent wrestlers with a soccer background (or vice-versa)? Let me hear from ya! Write away!

Not really pertaining to the subject, but during WC2002, new japan pro wrestling made all their refs wear the Japanese National kit.

Unfortunately I don't know anything about the soccer/wrestling pipeline, but I couldn't pass this by without asking:

    1. How did he choke his victims? Inquiring minds want to know.
    2. Why did a European come to Canada (during the 1970s, no less) looking for work as a soccer player?
