Soccer, Sports and Politics - Part Deux

  1. Is a lifetime ban legal?
We Dutch have been "convicted" by the EU courts as having inhumane punishments, because in our system it's hard to get a lifetime sentence, but when you get it, it really ment you would never leave prison anymore, unlike in the other EU countries.

    Ok, examples of this?

At the same time, I saw that Barca had a man red carded, at home, in a CL match. That doesn't sound like they had anyone in their pocket, TBH.

I've seen more examples of this.

Link? I hadn't heard of this.

I'll agree this is suspicious, but have they actually found a quid pro quo on this?

I also hadn't heard this, and I'm dubious that the Bank of Spain would bail out a Catalan institution. Spain has allowed plenty of historic clubs to fold, so this one sounds made up.

    Got a link on this?

All other teams have asshole fans and admin. DCU fans used to tell us how Convey "tore up the league" with his middling play. Madrid fans puff up their chests after they parked the bus for 2 games vs Citeh. Chelski/Citeh fans overlook their admin's many instances of cheating.

But then, Barca are "outsiders" to the English language media, and so they're seen as criminals, while Citeh and other English clubs aren't seen the same way.

But all fans are assholes. Its part of the job description.

If it wasn’t legal why would that be the punishment??? Doesn’t make sense.

Anyway, baseball has had the same policy since before the Black Sox, and Pete Rose still ain’t in the Hall of Fame, so yeah it’s legal.

Neither did Real park the bus for 2 games. I mean, they scored 4 goals.

Khan’s rants are funny but you just have to be Tim Matheson to his John Belushi.

    Disagreed. It did.

And if you wanted to memory hole that, then constantly being told that somehow, a defender who never left MLS is better than those who did play at a higher level.

That aside, every fanbasr puffs up their own players/coaches/admin, and sh!ts on those of other teams. Its part of the job description of "fan."

So they didn’t park the bus. QED.

But every red blooded American knows it wasn’t over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor. So let your freak flag fly.

No, playing 10 men behind the ball is in fact parking the bus.

That a side can also play a counter =/= not parking the bus.

So they alternated parking the bus with driving it up the field at least 4 times. Got it.

    Yawn.

You didn't actually watch the games, and you get your jollies disagreeing with me.

For "reasons," or something. Good to know.

    I am.

Im also curious about what "obvious" reasons exist to despise that club; I can agree that the Negreira Case is suspicious, but then, i hadn't seen any proven quid pro quo.

I hadn't seen any news about actual criminal activity vis a vis the cooking the books claim, because, if true, that is a serious offense in the US and Spain.

Getting "bailed out" by the bank of Spain, I hadn't heard of, either. Spain has allowed plenty of clubs to go under over the years, so it would be dubious that a Madrid based institution would "bail out" a Catalan one. If it was a loan with interest charged, that isn't really a "bail out," is it?

The rest of it sounded like any other fanbase's view of another, TBH.

I didn't particularly like Convey when he was with DCU. I don't remember anybody else loving him at the time, either.

EDIT: I don't mean I hated him; nor did I root against his success. Totally pulled for him at Reading.

But my recollection of DCU fan chatter at the time was jokes about him waving his arms in frustration because Etch and Moreno wouldn't pass to him.

But it really is simple - just don't gamble (on sports, or basketball more specifically).

I mean, way back when, I used to do an NFL weekly office pool, and used to do the NCAA tourny. And once I was at a layover in Vegas and went to a casino and lost $100 in about 5 minutes (did it for the experience), but otherwise, I have never gambled. Because of all the stories I have heard. For example, when I was in Memphis, people used to go down to someplace in Mississippi. One of my students said they went down for a show with friends, and when leaving saw a woman in a Lexus beating her head against the steering wheel. I went "Yup, the House always wins."

If any EPL wins the CL and the EPL gets 5 teams, I'm okay with that.

Personally, though, I'd rather have Arsenal win than ManCity. Or any ELP team win than ManCity. Well, maybe not Newcastle.

Yeah, Barca are bad, and currently their finances are really suspect. And I somewhat recently dove a bit into their history, and it is also suspect. In the same way that Juve and AC Milano where suspect, back in the 1950s, and possibly 1960s.

But Barca will never, ever have anything on Real.

    @Khan https://www.reuters.com/sports/socc...ted-bribery-refereeing-case-court-2023-09-28/
Also, there are lots of questions in the past few years about how much Barca spent on players, their stadium, took on loans and lower interest rates (pre-pandemic), were banned from at least 1 transfer window (possibly 2), yet somehow their finances are fine.
    There is also Barcagate.
And former President Bartomeu almost put the club into such debt that it would have forced them to sell players.

And I'm saying all of this as a Barca fan.

There's a reason those casinos are as opulent as the Doge's Palace of Suleyman the Magnificent's house. It's not because regular people win all the time.
