I know hundreds of people like that. My school's team went semis in what was the de facto state tournament (was called the Dixie Cup) my junior year. The person who did the morning announcements covered their playoff run like it was rhythmic gymnastics or something.

De facto because it was 1980, and in those days there weren't enough schools fielding teams for a state association to sanction an actual state championship

I know a guy who that happened to, but it was his SON. He went thru all kinds of emotional trauma but did not deny the kid's talent.
