    I had missed this one.

First of all, this streamer is a nobody. I never heard of Facundo Iriondo, and when I googled his name and World Cup reaction, I got a YouTube video that had 129 likes, and about 2K views (probably most of them after this crap came out). I could do a stream and get more than that, I think.

For perspective, the streamers I normally listen to (like Flavio Azzaro, Pablo Carroza or Davo Xeneize) rutinely get easily over 10K likes, and over 100K views, and all these covered the WC draw and none of them made a tasteless joke like that. But of course, after somehow this crap got out, his snippet got attention. Sucks that some nobody suddenly gets all this undeserved publicity for doing something that makes us look bad.

Having said that, there is no doubt that many Argentines, particularly in the soccer community, will find such a tasteless joke funny. I ran into this when we had the issue of Argentine players singing the stadium chant about France, Angola and Mbappe. I discussed this with people I know from Argentina who simply wouldn't get why was offensive. They would argue that this was not about race, that they are just making fun of France for having to take players from other countries. Never mind that most of those "African" players from other countries were actually born in France.

To me, it's obvious that there is a racial element, that some people do find it funny because it involves black players from African countries. Consider, hypotetically (for example), if Germany had to play Poland at the WC. I doubt we'd hear from any streamer who would think it funny to say that Germany is playing its B team, even if Germany do in fact have players with Polish roots, and if the German Empire (or Prussia) did control Poland for centuries. So, what is the difference? Yeah, that they are of African origin and they are black.

And btw, Kun Aguero is a sell-out who came from humble origins and now aligns himself with the right wingers.

I think some Argentines will make the argument that you are making, they will argue that the joke is on the French, not the Africans, but knowing our culture, an element of the joke is the fact that the players playing for France are of African descent. They are making fun of the (white) French because they have a team composed of many black players, (who for the most part are French by birth anyway, or if not they are legal immigrants nationalized French).

As I said in the previous post, I don't think that the people who make this joke would make it about German players with Polish roots.

Fair enough. I think the ease with which one can distinguish between French players whose great grandparents lived in France from those whose great grandparents lived in Africa is a factor.

I wonder if the German team had many players, including its biggest star, with names like Podolski, if you’d see the same remarks.

And thank you for finally explaining that in order to explain what’s racist about it, you have to write a paragraph about Argentine culture. You’re saying the joke is making fun of the French team and people, not the Senegalese team.

I went back and looked at every post about this, and I repped Casc because his was the only post making your point. Good job Casc!

Klose, Podolski, Goretzca, off the top of my head.

You could also argue that most Argentine players have Spanish or Italian roots, so they are not really Argentine. I guess the joke wouldn't work because Italy and Spain do have a resume that rivals Argentina's, so they wouldn't be our B team. But the point is, those who focus on the race aspect (which makes them racist) wouldn't find it as funny as talking about the French and the players of Africa origin.

Hmmm. Enough Tahs and Sanes and they'll also be joking about Germany. Even Turks are not as white as Poles.

BTW, there is this young centerback who's starting at Boca Juniors, Ayrton Costa, whose grandfather is from Cape Verde. They invited him from Cape Verde to play for their NT at the World Cup. He replied, "my grandpa is from Cape Verde but I'm Argentine. I will play only if Argentina calls me."

There are plenty of Black players, past and present, whose great-grandparents, or great-great-grandparents, or great-great-great-grandparents, born in France's overseas territories, in French Guiana or the Antilles, never set foot in Africa, let alone Senegal.

That makes that idiot Aguero's statement even more stupid.

Bwa ha ha ha ha!!!

Bristol City head coach Gerhard Struber believes the Championship should have VAR brought in to create "more fairness".

The Robins saw a late equaliser disallowed for offside in their 1-0 defeat by Millwall on Saturday, resulting in a huge post-match melee involving staff and players from both sides.

    Que paso aqui?

Federal police in Argentina carried out multiple raids Tuesday on the headquarters of the Argentine Football Association (AFA) and at least 17 soccer clubs.

The raids were part of a judicial investigation into alleged ties to financial services company Sur Finanzas, which is under investigation for alleged money laundering and tax evasion. Ordered by federal judge Luis Armella, the more than 30 raids were conducted simultaneously on first and second division clubs and the AFA headquarters in the Argentine capital.

Sur Finanzas, owned by Ariel Vallejo, sponsors AFA tournaments and several first and second division clubs.

A judicial official with access to the case told The Associated Press that police officers are searching for contracts signed by the clubs with the financial firm and other documentation stored on electronic devices. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.

Egypt and Iran are calling on football’s governing body to intervene in the LGBTQ+ Pride celebration planned to coincide with their group stage match in Seattle at the 2026 World Cup.

Egypt’s Football Association (EFA) said on Tuesday it had sent a letter to Fifa urging them to prevent any LGBTQ+ Pride-related activities during the national team’s match against Iran next June.

The EFA argues in the letter that such events would clash with the cultural and religious values of the nations participating in the match.

It seems as if UCLA won't be able to rely on charitable name, image and likeness donations from Troy Aikman anymore. During a recent appearance on the Sports Media Podcast with Richard Deitsch, Aikman -- the UCLA quarterback who went on to a Hall of Fame career with the Dallas Cowboys -- recounted the specific instance that turned him off from donating NIL money.

"I gave money to a kid, I won't mention who," Aikman said. "I've done it one time at UCLA, never met the young man. He was there a year, he left after the year. I wrote a sizable check, and he went to another school. I didn't even get so much as a thank you note. So, it's one of those deals, to where I'm done with NIL. I want to see UCLA be successful, but I'm done with it."

    Seems sub optimal

The 11 US World Cup host cities are facing a collective shortfall of at least $250m, due to a highly restrictive deal from Fifa that may yet see the federal government – as well as local and private funding – have to pick up the costs.

Some cities are so desperate that they are being forced into pitches for sponsorship to “local dry cleaners and mechanics”, in the words of various sources. Fifa’s own commercial contracts mean cities can’t even do deals with local convenience store chains, as their sale of food is considered to cut across primary partners, such as McDonald’s, all as the global governing body is set to retain virtually all of the $11-14bn revenue the 2026 World Cup is expected to generate.

I'm guessing the orange King Donald the Turd will intervene and threaten to remove Seattle as a host city unless Seattle backs down.
