The Weah story I remember is that at the very end of his career, Liberia needed a certain result in qualifying to make the World Cup. This was a long time ago when not that many Africans played in Europe, so African players typically were in the socio economic class I’ll call “bribable.” Weah allegedly went running around the field toward the end offering various opposing players money if they’d let Liberia get the result. Nobody took the bribe. That seems Trumpian, and not something a future statesman would do. You’re quoting Tim the son I’m talking about George the father

Miami is so funny. How can a team that's coached by Javier Mascherano, a guy who tore his anus defending for his country, be so hilariously bad at defending?
Spoiler (Move your mouse to the spoiler area to reveal the content) Show Spoiler Hide Spoiler I dont get this comment at all. Inter only gave up one goal, and it was on a PK on a foul in the corner of the box. Also, you would have a point if Inter’s keeper kept them in the match, but that wasn’t the case. It was Porto’s keeper who (almost) saved his team. Last year’s Suarez would have had one or two in the first half. I haven’t watched too much Miami this year, so maybe he just had a bad game, but he was a liability out there. I don’t see how they can win with this squad. It’s not good enough.
https://www.espn.com/soccer/story/_/id/45543902/tottenham-fined-anti-gay-chants-match-man-united Spurs fined for anti gay chant. I found this surprising since you’d think Spurs fans would be hardcore antifa.
Due to a rainout yesterday, major league baseball had the opportunity for the two best pitchers in the game, Detroit's Tarik Skubal and the Pirate's Paul Skenes, matchup in today's double-header. What we learned is that neither of them is ready to be the man. Skubal pitched in the opening game while Skenes is on the mound now in the nightcap. From MLB's perspective, it would have been the best game of the season so far. Really, neither of these guys has a down night. Simply malfeasance not to force one of these two teams to slot their pitcher against the other. But from a player perspective, it's puzzling. Both of these guys are pitching in an era when no one really gives a crap anymore about starters. Thanks to pitch counts and fear of ever-increasing injury rates, starters have lost their allure, and they never really pitch any more when the game matters. I know if I was the best pitcher on the planet and had a chance to go head-head against the second best pitcher, I'd make sure we played the same game. (Skubal's excuse was that he preferred the day games of a double-header.) Neither of these guys is a dawg.
Sad to see a Gold Cup game being played in a basically empty stadium. The T&T v Haiti game in Houston can’t have more than ~1k in attendance. Also sad to see how poor T&T have become.
that PK miss by Haiti though…embarrassing. T&T have a man advantage, Dwight Yorke should have his team pouncing on this opportunity.
When I posted this, Miami were just being completely ripped apart defensively on every single play. But Miami got, and deserved, the win in the end. It's pretty mind-boggling for a '96er like me to see an MLS team playing keepaway from a European giant. Suárez sure is a punk ass bitch though. If soccer were fair, he'd get a red in damn near every single game. Pretty much every time he's involved in a play, it's dirty.
Cardinals beat Skenes earlier this year, and he’s 0-4 against them. The same Cardinals that are in extra innings after blowing a five run lead against the White Sox tonight.
In that playoff game against Atlanta last season, Suarez shoved Guzan into the goal after a goal and somehow avoided any card, IIRC. I mean, as an Atlanta fan, I think Guz is washed, but c'mon man, you can't shove him into the goal like that.
Is it still possible to trade Herschel for 7 Liberian draft picks? As long as USSF player whisperer Alexi Lala permits such a culture change.
The European Champion played the South American Champion. Under the old intercontinental championship format that would have been the final and the winner would have been the world champion. And what a game it was!
Wow PSG lost I don’t know what to make of all this. I’m stunned. I think I posted here that the over/under for the MLS teams should be set at 2.
For a team that has been winning everything by playing as a team rather than depending on their superstars as in the past, PSG sure missed their superstar Dembele last night.
Map of London clubs Cray Wanderers. If you're just kinda wandering around, can you ever be taken seriously as a club?
Corinthian Generals play in a stadium named after a King and Enfield Town plays in a stadium named after a queen. Barnet plays at The Hive, yet Brentford has a bee on their shield. And the Cray Wanderers have been Wandering since 1860. Worth a cross post in the Maps thread, IMO.
Dodgers say they asked federal agents to leave parking lot - ESPN Dodgers denied the federal agents access to the stadium's parking lot, subsequently postponed plans to unveil initiatives to assist local immigrant communities.
since the Dodgers own the parking lot, go and chill elsewhere: The security guard on hand told the agents that they were not allowed on private property, prompting federal officials to circle outside to Gate E, the downtown-facing entrance to the ballpark's parking lot where dozens of protesters gathered.
Was thinking the Feds might've been there to nab Shohei on another illegal gambling charge. I mean his 2nd crooked interpreter in a row. Yeah, yeah - that's it!
Thanks, wonder if anyone can put together a UK soccer and geography quiz for us??? I would definitely fail
