that started a streak of 20 straight losing seasons, corresponding to the 20 years I lived in the Pittsburgh area. Phillies had 8 straight losing seasons starting when we moved here . . . Well, they were 81-81 one season. Alas, that streak has reversed itself.
Few did see it. They should really just give up on this big international push they're doing. The NFL is just too different, it will never be anything other than a niche sport anywhere else.
It's a difficult sport to understand, if you don't grow up with it. I think it would take much more than the occasional exhibition game to grow some roots in places in which it's not being played. I can say from personal experience that the constant stops in play can be very annoying for somebody newly introduced to the sport. But over time, the game grows on you, or at least it grew on me. It's more spectator-friendly than Rugby, (which was my point of comparison), as the forward pass and receiver-friendly rules makes it a much more wide open game, in spite of all the stoppages. And about those stoppages, once you figure out the rules and the point of the game they become less annoying. I started seeing Gridiron as some sort of cerebral chess-like game with the pieces being human beings, and not just any human beings but some of the top athletes in the world, some of the biggest, strongest, quickest, fastest, most accurate MFers you'll ever see. Add to this a significant amount of controlled (well, mostly controlled) violence, and it's one hell of a sport to watch.
The deeply sanitized modern game bears little relation to the group MMA match that was gridiron for many years.Until the early 2000s,the violence was the selling point for many fans.
The problem NFL influence has on USA soccer is the habit to coach players to the hilt in instructing what to do. Feyenoord Academy has had American academies coming over for a week, 2 weeks to have those kids train under our guidance. Iirc an academy called St Louis gallagher or something like that where over here and a boy was asked what difference he noted. He said, (when a goal was conceded or a dangerous situation occurred, can't remember exactly) when the coach called him to the sideline and he expected to get instructions about it. Instead the coach asked him what he himself thought went wrong and then what he thought to do about it. In other words he was challenged to think on the pitch, not only act on instructions given.
Yeah, that was unbelievable. Australia is not what they used to be, but 67 points! I found that it's hard to get somebody who hasn't grown up with the game to appreciate it as a spectator sport. I think rugby 7s is more watcher friendly, but for those of us who grew up with rugby union it cannot possibly compare.
Looks like we’ll have to keep waiting for his return. Shame, he’s one of the best of this generation, and arguably -considering his talent, his unpredictability, and also his theatrics- the most fun to watch. Neymar's Al-Hilal return 'could be delayed by another two months after Brazilian failed medical tests' https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/f...wo-months-Brazilian-failed-medical-tests.html
To Al-Hilal? Is anyone watching this club, Neymar or not? It's like Messi playing in Miami (I'd be surprised if the Saudi league had even the popularity MLS has)- most of the other club's supporters have already conceded them the titles while he's here. I'll go thru the motions of watching the games I can watch until he's retired and the league is fair again. Waiting him out, so to speak.
Messi is out injured, and has only played about half of Miami’s games this year. They are still really good without him.
Yeah, I am not new to it. Trust me, it doesn't grow on you in the long run. Life is too short to put up with the constant stoppages, especially when you know they are all unnecessary (because there are already stoppages between each play, and there are 1,047,748 substitutions per match).. Ever been to a pub when there are 7 NFL matches being shown at once? Terrible vibe.
Just saw the pictures of the Miami Dolphins WR Tyrteek being detained, handcuffed and laying on the ground right outside the Miami stadium. He was driving to the stadium when we has stopped by police. Disturbing to say the least. Hill said he has "no idea" why officers placed him in handcuffs; he said he was not disrespectful and did not use profanity toward the officers. He eventually was released after some Miami Dolphins officials intervened. As he said, " What if I wasn't Tyreek Hill? "
Yep. Even if he'd done something wrong, cops will do this to just about anyone darker than a brown paper bag.
He has no idea? I guess he has to say that, but I have an idea of why a black man was handcuffed by police.
Well, yeah. It's not just him. They've loaded the team enough to win even without Messi. It's just a shame. Even if they get upset on the playoffs, it's just a horrible way to treat the other teams in this league.
You guys are my hope this year to dethrone the Chiefs in the two teams make it to the SB. I am tired of the Kansas City dynasty now...lol
Am I the only who has questions marks of Deion Sanders coaching abilities? That dude seems to be all talk.....
