Yeah, but he did not play in the semi, which was their toughest matchup, and the one in which the US had to come from behind. I think as other teams narrow the gap with the US we will see the US teams being chosen more with chemistry in mind, and then playing the hot hand and matchups. If the aim is to win, it can’t be an all-star team, it can’t be about recognizing the players that the fans think are deserving based on stats and team loyalties. Coaches have to pick a team, not go with the all-star approach, and then game by game go with whoever is hot. It also can’t be about making sure everybody plays anymore.
It happens in soccer too. Marta is the best player ever, she deserves everything she gets, but Brazil was playing better without her. You can say the same this year about Portugal and Ronaldo, and also about Argentina and Messi, at least when he's not 100 percent like at Copa America.
Back then I think either one would win the gold by himself. I remember the first time I saw a game with NBA players. I think one of the players was Dr. J. I was amazed. I'd played a little basketball in high school in Argentina, but it might as well have been a completely different game, I'd never seen anything like the NBA. Well, maybe the Globetrotters, who I saw as a kid, but that had seemed to me at the time more like a circus act than a sport. Today it's very different, high school kids all over the world can do crazy dunks.
Yeah, this will sound harsh, but she didn't look up to the pace. No shame in that, she was amazing for many years.
So the English Championship season started this weekend. The entertainment started early with Preston North End departing with their coach immediately after their first game (a 2-0 loss). Then there's Wayne Rooney. After his failures at DC United and Birmingham City, his new appointment at Plymouth Argyle feels like a last chance saloon for him. Their first game? A 4-0 defeat with Rooney saying "I've told them after the game if I see a performance like that again from any player - whether they've been at the club for a long time or whether they've just come into the club as a new player - they will not play," Odds that he will last longer than the 15 games he managed at Birmingham?
So the US was late providing evidence for their appeal that they weren't late making the original appeal? Ok then.
They didn’t have access to all the video that showed them making the appeal. The IOc/arbiter really needs to rethink the medal-sharing proposal.
The arbiter isn't the one who makes the decisions regarding medals; the IOC is.I can certainly see an argument for sharing the bronze.
There’s only so many olympiads before we have to bring the best players, and start leaving behind legacies looking to get one more medal.
If that French girl's foot was about half a step behind and it was a Game Tying three we might be having that conversation this year
Can't say I am surprised that Rooney failed/will fail as a manager. Just never got the manager vibes from him. Ditto for the likes of Gerrard and Lalas. We can only hope that the former two don't pursue a career as a football "analyst' for a major network.
Don't forget Derby. Although to be fair, I guess in that situation, he was brought in when it was already going really poorly. I was at Loftus Road in April 22, when QPR mathematically sealed Derby's fate (I like to go to other stadiums on "off days" from Arsenal).
I was an Arsenal fan from '95 to '06. I haven't found another team to follow with another player remotely like what they had!
I've been to Loftus Road back when they were in the third tier, whatever it was called. I had just gotten off a plane and hadn't slept, so I was just chilling in the front row of the upper tier toward one end. They were playing Notts County and all the away fans were behind the goal on my end. So this guy comes over and starts yelling at the top of his lungs, "You foookin BAAAASTARDS! C'mon, let's 'ave a go if you fink you're 'ard enuff! C'mon, Oill foight yez awwl! Foookin Nottin-amshire scum!" Meanwhile, an old man a couple of rows behind me yells at him, "Go on, watch the game yuh daaaaft baaastard!" Priceless!
I don’t think he failed at Derby. In fact I think he did ok in extremely challenging circumstances. It’s been all downhill since then but there never seems to be a shortage of clubs who will take a punt on “big name” coaches regardless of their record.
