Now that the curtain is about to go down on those epic Olympics, can we share our biggest, most exciting sporting moments? (excluding the amazing Opening ceremony). For me I would say those 2: -Marchand winning the 200 M vs the Hungarian WR holder. - Julien Alfred getting the 100 M gold medal in track and field.
And the same is true in the US at the academy and higher club level as far as youth soccer goes. The idea that it’s all about “athleticism” in the US isn’t really the case any longer. Sure you’ll still find that attitude at some clubs (particularly those that specialize in racking up tournament wins), and it’s still predominant at the D1 college level, but things have changed a lot in the last couple decades.
Agreed with Alfred. SML setting another WR in the 400m hurdles (with Cockrell getting a surprise silver). Hall winning the men's 400m. Men's 1500m final. Both basketball finals. And the epic victory by the US women in the 4x400. (And Bol passing 2 in the final 50m to get silver for the Netherlands.)
I was truly afraid she put too much on her platter and cost her the marathon, but she managed that gruelling Three-course menu.
My favorite was Steve Kerr benching Jason Tatum for most of the tournament. This, combined with Jaylon Brown being left off the team in the first place, means that both of these guys will be carrying massive chips on their shoulders for the next season. Best possible gift for Boston Celtics fans.
Chiles loses her bronze cause after the USA appealed her score and she got 3rd. Romania challenged the decision and it found that the appeal came in 4 seconds too late. So the Romanian girl gets the bronze. This why judged sports is so bullshit. They agree the judge ********ed up but it was registered 4 seconds late.
Epic, a true GOAT Sifan Hassan wins thrilling finish to become first woman to win 5,000m, 10,000m and marathon medals The Daily Telegraph|4 hours ago Hassan had less than 36 hours to recover from winning bronze in the 10,000m but sprinted clear of Tigst Assefa to win a remarkable gold Sifan Hassan's Olympic feat arguably greatest in history of Summer Games USA Today|4 hours ago What Sifan Hassan did in Paris - run a 5k, 10k and marathon - within about 142 hours - was unprecedented, potentially dangerous and a little crazy. Sifan Hassan wins marathon, third medal of Paris Olympics ktiv|9 minutes ago PARIS (NBC) - Sifan Hassan won the Paris Olympic women's marathon in Olympic record time to win her third medal of the Paris Games after claiming bronze in the 5000m and 10,000m.
To be fair, when the Romanians pointed out that their gymnast had been wrongly deducted for stepping out of bounds when video proved that she had not, (which would have gotten her back the bronze), the ruling was that it was too late to protest. So, either they should respect the time limit to protest for both or allow both protests. Under both scenarios the Romanian would get third place. Having said that, it’s still true that judged sports are bullshit.
Saw Brown at the Espys with his new girlfriend. Life don't seem so bad for him. Didn't know that. But I agree with your point. I just would like to see the judges not ******** up.
The most exciting thing for me was when I found the mute button during the USA vs Brazil final. Foudy's incessant yacking was painful.
And Romania for the win (being the better federation) in this situation: https://www.npr.org/2024/08/11/g-s1-16509/us-gymnast-jordan-chiles-bronze-medal-return In addition to the incorrect difficulty score originally awarded to Chiles (which was fixed with her inquiry, then reversed Saturday) and the acceptance of an inquiry that had been filed too late, viewers online had pointed out a third potential error. Maneca-Voinea finished in fifth after judges deducted 0.1 from her score as a penalty for stepping out of bounds during her routine. But video replay appeared to show that she had stayed in bounds. Without the penalty, she would have scored 13.800 — which would have earned her the bronze over both Chiles and Barbosu. In addition to the protest over Chiles' inquiry, Romanian officials had asked the arbitration court to rescore Maneca-Voinea's routine. And finally, Romania asked that the three gymnasts — Barbosu, Maneca-Voinea and Chiles — be ranked together in third place in order to each receive a bronze medal. The court declined both requests.
I'm waiting for a sado-masochist representation of the 'Last Supper' now. All of this is too conventional.
