Women's soccer final us 1 v. Brasil 0 First half was really exciting. Change in tactics by US in the second half slowed the game down. Still, a couple of brilliant saves by Naher, one in each half. And it looks like Brasil have their next generation playing.
U.S. team reminds of those Rooney era Yanited teams. Really good up front. Really good at the back. A big hole in the middle. But able to win despite playing the "donut" formation. I heard/read somewhere that Lavelle had a bit of a knock, but, sheesh, they can't control a midfield without her in there.
Close races are exciting, but so is this . . . TEAM USA DOMINATES 🤯The women’s 4x400m relay wins its 8th straight Olympic gold medal!📺: @NBCOlympics & @peacock #ParisOlympics pic.twitter.com/1vk0yWAySr— Team USA (@TeamUSA) August 10, 2024
I think this is a longer term problem in the we have always been like that. Or at least post 1999 team, particularly for attackers the NWSL. Sheesh, Williams is the all time NWSL leading scorer, yet can't get a starting role on the national team. As for midfielders, who have we had? Lloyd. Lavelle. Horan, who is too slow to play with this current group of attackers. There are a few in NWSL that Id like to see get a look, or second look, but compared to other areas, there is an absence of talent.
I was saying off line that the women have such a depth of talent right now that we could probably field 2 teams and win gold and silver.
It's likely development. In men and women, we put our best athletes at forward and FB. Players with an ability to read the game and good touch go to CB so we can play from the back. So who is left to play MIdfield. Most styles coming up, have the CB play it to the FB and attack works up the wing then crossed or passed inside. Midfielders are no more than shuttlers.
France men's volley ball made mince meat of Poland today (3-0) to win the gold. Same score vs the Italians in semis. First team to win back to back gold since the us in 84 and 88. Glad I had a chance to see them in their first match vs Serbia. I think will go through some withdrawal by Monday lol.....I have to say sine I got back, using a combination of Peacock and CBC, I have been able to watch a ton of events. That Olympics as someone was saying on a podcast feels like the first one of the modern era with some many new sports, new technologies, streaming etc. It has been EPIC!
It’s their world, and us old men just need to get over it. I agree, I don’t get it. Plus, a lot of the OG breakers think it is ridiculous, and the organization running it does not represent them nor the interests of the breaking community at large. But, whatever.
I think this is an interesting take. On the one hand, your view makes a lot of sense from the physical view of the game. OTOH, Spain continue to churn out midfielders with vision and passing ability, and they've won the men's U19 Euros, the Olympics, and the Euros.
They are kind of copying Klopp's Liverpool. Tell me a US midfielder developed through one of the MLS academies that was a creative 10.
