Tired of criticism for ignoring foreign athletes, NBC played up the rivalry between the Norwegian and the Brit, and treated the Americans as an afterthought.
WOW...Gabby Thomas won the gold in 200 m...I was betting on Julien Alfred..... Thomas ran a great race.
I asked as Alfred's victory in the 100m was a bit of an upset (Richardson was favored). Not a big upset, but an upset nonetheless. And Thomas (as I went back to verify) does have the best form this season in the 200m Thomas was far clearer a favorite than Richardson. Of course, I've been paying attention to these things. I hope SAFP recovers from her injury in time for the 4x100 (does she also run the 4x400 - I can't remember). If not, the US is the clear favorite. If so, it will be so, so close.
The middle distances are my favorite races to watch, and to me the 1500 is the best. You need the right balance of natural talent, mental toughness, and strategic acumen.
It's what we use in the US, and Charlie is from/based in the US. If I were talking to a European, I'd probably use "athletics." It's a running event, so it is T&F/athletics.
I know that Alfred was a pretty big upset. Sha'Carri was the favorite. Spent a lot of time in Jamaica the last few years and pretty familiar with the Jamaican T&F athletes. There was no love lost for Richardson there.
I don't think it was that big. Alfred has been running very well all year. Not surprised, and that is also funny.
Well, yeah, racism is everywhere unfortunately. I remember a Chinese friend of mine - she used to be my interpreter - moved to Tokyo to study. One day she called me crying, and told me that she was tired of facing racism, and said that Japan was the most racist country in the world. I was thinking, “obviously you haven’t been to the West”. But it’s everywhere, we just need to recognize it, denounce it and reject it.
Back in the states now and watching the Games on Peacock. I have to say that the coverage is pretty solid. They offer a lot of programming and events. Having said that, the commentaries leave a lot to be desired, to say the least...
Just found out this.....F***** insane.... If you've been following the 2024 Summer Olympics, you've probably seen a lot of Snoop Dogg. But his presence at the Olympic Games seemingly came with a significant paycheck. Henry L. McNamara, who is a New York-based venture capitalist and Forbes 30-Under-30 honoree, recently shared an interesting tidbit on X (formerly known as Twitter). According to McNamara, Snoop, 52, is earning $500,000 a day for his Olympic appearances, plus expenses.
Nah, we get credit for stuff like this. Big butts/natural athletes Kipling stuff, but they act like Sven pulling a truck being him (Strongest Man) isn't a sport, so Sven gets credit for brains. It IS a sport.
Mmmm, we tend to call somethings racism far too easy nowadays, when it comes down to ethnic xenophobism. So more an "Us vs them" matter.
Everyone who plays a sport is an athlete. That's just too broad a term unless it's been pidginized (for lack of a better term) by Europeans to define a smaller subgroup.
