Apropos Argentina's racism it's been fascinating to see the reactions after a naturalized Bolivian won a gold medal for them. Largely positive in spite of the long history of racism against Bolivians, a long history of immigration and their recent tirade against France. Argentinians are great people and I absolutely love them but they can turn racism on or off with little effort or self awareness.
I think it has to do with two factors: 1. The passport issue: Brazilians and Argentinians (not sure about Charruas) have a clearer path towards European citizenship, hence they're more attractive to scouts since they won't have to use those non-EU places on a team. 2. The mental toughness issue: Although there are noticeable improvements in this regards in the last two decades, our players have more difficulties than Uruguayans, Argentinians or Brazilians adapting to the European club culture. Each case is different and obviously, and there are also cases where the Mercosur players fail to adapt, but I think that many scouts think of James or Jackson and decide to play it safe with a Charrua or an Argentinian of similar caliber.
We were just talking in another thread how the worlds tallest nation should be so much better in basketball. Happy for them.
Sinisterra developed pretty good at Feyenoord. Even acquired a mental toughness to overcome a serious injury. Luis Sinisterra, Feyenoord gem: 'I've become stronger, more versatile, more mature' Feyenoord's most notable player this season is Luis Sinisterra. In his own words, the Colombian dribbler became a different person due to a serious knee injury. "I had to go through things I didn't know at all." Bart Vlietstra 18 March 2022, 14:53
And a couple of additional notes to this: 1 - Chiles, who finished 3rd, won an appeal. I was cutting onions while watching her celebration. 2 - This is the first all Black podium in gymnastics, men or women!
Are you ready for another epic women's field hockey matchup? I think the Dutch girls are looking better than our girls this year, but we'll see.
What's there not to love? Dude won a gold medal in the coolest sport there is, doing crazy pirouettes with his bike. But you are right, Argentine is a country of many contradictions, and we Argentines think nothing of insulting immigrants, while we also love and celebrate our immigrants. Most of us (at least up to my generation) come from parents, grandparents or great-grandparents who were immigrants, and even today Argentina has over 2 million immigrants, significantly less than the number we had when I was growing up, but still until recently it was the most immigrants of any Latin American country. (At least until the recent wave of Venezuelans who fled to Colombia, which is several millions, although many of those then move on to other destinations.) In recent years the largest contingent of immigrants in Argentina comes from other South American countries, with the largest groups being immigrants from Paraguay and Bolivia. You are not going to hear me justify the way we insult immigrants, because there is no justification. That song about France that offended so many people is no different than the songs I used to hear growing up about Boca fans being all Bolivian and Paraguayan, and similar crap. While there have been some efforts recently to stop such behavior in the stadiums, it's true that too many people still don't get it, and they think it's just futbol chicanery and means nothing. On the other hand, I can tell you that Argentina is immigrant friendly, you won't see in Argentina a political party advocating building a wall between Argentina and Paraguay or Bolivia. Some years ago one senator, inspired by Trump, proposed building a wall in our northern border, and just about everybody from all political parties shut him down and called him crazy. Also, Argentina's legalization path for immigrants to be allowed to work and eventually become citizens is very straight forward, as it should be everywhere. You won't see in Argentina a large number of immigrants condemned to "undocumented" or (as some say) "illegal" status. Argentina has many flaws, and our failure to see own racist attitudes is certainly one of them, and yet we are in fact also known for genuinely embracing immigrants as our own. The Argentina I love is the Argentina that embraces the immigrant, that's my Argentina. I also love that other country that I chose as a young man to emigrate to, that other country that also has many contradictions, that other country that has too many people that don't always embrace immigrants, and yet has many others who warmly embraced me when I chose to come here. I love being part of the United States of America that embraces immigrants, I am proud of the United States of America that strives to provide equal access to justice to all immigrants who are not proficient in English, regardless of legal status, and I am proud to be presently working for the state of California in pursuit of that noble goal.
Wow, yet another epic Orange Squad vs La Albiceleste confrontation. Whether football or field hockey, men or women, hardly ever it's a walk in the park kind of encounter that doesnot excite ...(except the 1974 one that is).
Not saying all the Colombians lack mental toughness, but that's what scouts and agents perceive. Very seldom do they bet on a direct transfer from the Colombian league and even when they play in tougher competitions, they have their reserves.
Send your best to Feyenoord. We hug and cherish them Was so funny when I posted a picture of a Feyenoord fan, who had Sini's portrait tattooed iirc on his leg, to the amazement of one of the Colombian posters in your forum, because in his eyes he hadnot yet done anything that would trigger/justify such an act. But it was simply the way he played and the joy he gave the fans that makes them do such a thing, just out og love. So send your best to Rotterdam and we make them feel at home.
Everyone's timeline needs a cleanse and it doesn't get cleansier than Snoop Dogg dancing for a horse at the Olympics:pic.twitter.com/OWDIefIDlA— Larry the Cat (@Number10cat) August 6, 2024
Well, the women in the picture iirc didnot win a medal, but for sure they got themselves into an Olympic picture for eternity, long after everybody forgot who won the medals in that surf run.
