Is Chance Carnegie DuPont a result of the marriage between the Carnegie and DuPont families? I thought Rooney Mara was insanely rich.
I watch Olympic Track and Field as closely as I do in large part to see athletes from the Caribbean countries excel. St. Lucia and Dominica here, Grenada and the Bahamas recently, Jamaica before that - it's awesome.
this is pretty much why I stopped watching the Olympics in 1984. The TV guide said there would be coverage of the hammer throw. As a former thrower who always wanted to try the hammer, I wanted to watch it. There was an interminable feature on America’s best hope overcoming adversity and making the Olympics. After 20 minutes, cut to his best throw. Good enough for 7th place or something. Briefly you see the medalists. Some Germans East and West, or maybe a Finn or something. Whoever they were, you didn’t get to see them if you were watching American TV.
What you're missing is that you may think the Olympics is sports, and should be covered like sports, but a very large corporation spent a metric ********ton of money to turn the Olympics into content. And they own that content within the borders of the United States of America. They will present that content how they want it, not how you want it, and if you don't like it, you can eat a great big pile of shit, because NBC Universal Comcast didn't spend all that money so you could see the Olympics you wanted to see. You're going to see the Olympics they want you to see. Enjoy your pile of shit, everyone. Or I guess you could get a VPN and pretend to be in some other country so you can see things how you want. That probably works.
When did it even become an event? I mean---don't get me wrong---it was cool. But when did the games first start including these mixed relay events?
Daley Thompson had a similar opinion about the '84 Olympics tv coverage and wore this on his teeshirt after his decathlon victory. https://www.mediastorehouse.co.uk/p...los-angeles-usa-los-angeles-21476995.jpg.webp
Peacock has been fantastic and at a great price point. Good mix of NBC coverage and World Feed options, and complete events all over the place.
Peacock has every event in its entirety, for $8 a month or $14 for premium plus. That's staggeringly cheap to see exactly the Olympics you want to see since you can watch any event in its entirety, live or on replay, or choose from a variety of viewing options for multiple events, to medal events only, to highlight packages. Never been anything like it in my lifetime but I sure hope it's the norm from now on. I've just watched the Men's Trap Final in its entirety. Interesting event. I did think it was a bit hurtful to play "Dancing Queen" when the Swedish shooter was eliminated from competition (six shooters for 20 targets, five for the next ten - here's where the Swede was out, four for the next ten). American Vincent Hancock became the fifth athlete all time to win the gold medal in the same event four consecutive Olympics.
Tokyo! the swimming one is crazy because any order male/female and it is a 400 Medley so 100 meters of each stroke. The time swings and lead changes can be crazy.
The smile on Bol's face as she got to the line was wonderful. Cool event. By the way, kayak cross wasn't nearly as fun as ski cross or snow cross are in the Winter Games.
There is no option to see the unedited opening ceremonies. The NBC coverage showed interviews from the Team USA boat while the "controversial" Last Supper / Feast of Dionysus performance was happening, and if you watch the replay, you only see the version NBC Universal Comcast wants you to see, with the interviews. For "big" events (e.g. gymnastics), if you're watching live, you can see the performance at each station with no commentary. But the only replays available are the network coverage with the announcers and showing events out of order for dramatic reasons. I mean, I'm glad the shooting and surfing and such is easy to watch replays of, but when the wife tells me she wants to see the complete opening ceremonies without Peyton Manning's commentary, it's not available in this country. And if she wants to see the complete women's vault final, she can watch live at 8 am or she can see the edited version later. Is the coverage better than Olympics of decades ago? Heck yeah it is. But make no mistake, the content is the property of NBC Universal Comcast and they will show you what they want, not what you want.
I concede the point about the edited version of that scene of the Opening Ceremonies; we had been in the hospital with our daughter when it aired live and appreciated being able to watch the whole thing without commercials, but noted we did not see what people had gotten angry about. But I don't know why one would expect any network in the world to allow you to watch that event without their announcers, and if that's the standard of allowing us to choose what we want to see, we'll be disappointed to the end of time. We watched the replay of the full team vault competition. Is that what you mean or something else? It's still available on the app, for another week. No commentary but the scores are provided. EDIT: you don't mean that. I haven't even tried to watch the individual one yet.
When not at the events, during the day, I watch the Olympics on French TV (France 2 & 3). Although they tend to cover French athletes, they do a decent job with their coverage since it is pretty much uninterrupted for long stretches. The cycling competition yesterday was simply epic. I also did use a VPN to watch CBC Canada. Excellent coverage as well and a ton of replays on their site. Highly recommend. Going to my last event today, Track and Field, before, regrettably flying back to the States tomorrow.
That is actually what I was looking for, and I found it today - basically, the team final, the vault competition only, and all the teams, not just the USA (and Italy who happened to be in the same rotation as the US, so if you're just watching the US gymnasts, you get to see Italy too). I didn't find it a couple of days ago when my wife asked for it, but that was the day of the team finals so maybe it just takes some time - but yes, the non-announcer version of Canada and Japan and so on doing the vault as part of the team finals is available. This actually pleases me a lot. Maybe there aren't sports events which are hidden or restricted, if I wait long enough or search correctly. The opening ceremonies though - it's a cultural event. The opening ceremonies in 2008 were a celebration of Chinese culture, the opening ceremonies in 2012 were a celebration of British culture (and I still rewatch the Mr. Bean part occasionally), etc. The opening ceremonies in 2024 were very French, and I would like the opportunity to see them, without hearing commentary from Peyton Manning. It's like, if I go to the opera, I dunno, The Pearl Fishers by Bizet, it's in French and the opera house helpfully puts English translations onto little screens above the stage, which is good because I don't understand French. But I don't want the San Francisco Opera to cut away from the duet in act I, scene 2, to hear some irrelevant commentary from Kim Kardashian. Fortunately, the San Francisco Opera knows their audience and they're not going to do that. But with NBC's ownership of this content within the borders of the United States, I don't get a choice. I get Peyton Manning or I get to enjoy a big pile of shit. It's like, they already have the content - they can put up a stream on Peacock like they do for all of the sports, and they can put ads on it like they do for the sports streams (I guess the version of Peacock I get as a Comcast internet customer is not the fully commercial free version), but they don't.
The coming together of Maestro Mr. Bean, Vangelis, and Chariots of Fire was brilliant, as was that whole show. Something I've often watched are interviews with Paul O'Donovan, Irish Lightweight Sculls goal medalist with partner Fintan McCarthy this year and silver with his brother Gary. These guys are hilarious - and very good.
Seriously, what happened with judo today, if someone wrote a movie like that, I would think it was cheesy. Here is a short summary of it on French TV. It is French but self explanatory. Team score is on the top left. Out of 6 fights, Japan was leading 3-1. France tied 3-3 and a draw was needed for a final fight. I don’t know who wrote that script! lol…
The cycling road race was one event that had excellent coverage in the US. It was on live on CNBC with relatively few ads. Watched the last 1 1/2 hours of it and it was engrossing. I guess Pogacar would have won had he showed up but Evenepoel is a star in his own right. And boy the drama of him getting a puncture a few km from the end and the look of horror on his face until his team car arrived with a new bike…
NBC does know how to cover road cycling - I watched some of the Tour de France a few weeks ago and it's hard to argue with their coverage. I don't know how ESPN or Fox Sports would cover it, but NBC has built credibility with their TdF coverage. It's like when you're used to watching the Premier League on NBC and then suddenly the Euros and Copa America are on Fox and you have Alexi Lalas on your television screen and you're trying not to throw things at him.
