Have a great time. Went to Lyon for the first time two years ago; hope to go back someday. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it.
Well, if someone is going to lose a day or two of vacation time, good thing that person lives in a country that commonly provides 7-9 weeks of vacation time per year.
Color me jealous. I'm not necessarily in a hurry to retire--if only because I would like to savor and enjoy the 8-10* years of my life between now and then--but there's one thing I am really looking forward to when my wife & I are both retired in 12-14 years**. And that thing will be taking trips in the Spring & Fall rather than Summer when everything is hot, crowded, and expensive. It's just about impossible for her to travel much during the school year. *I haven't decided whether to retire at 65 or 67. **My wife is 3 years & change younger than I; also she would likely finish the school year rather than retire on her birthday in January.
This is pretty much our first opportunity to do exactly that. Child starts college next month, so I will be available to travel with her to any exciting places she goes. Detroit? Not so much. Lyon? Hell yes. The spring and fall thing is a huge bonus - our last trip to France was Paris in July some years back and it was sticky and extremely crowded. I think Lyon in October should be much nicer on both of those criteria.
I can't tell you anything you can't learn from a decent travel guide or website. I'll just say that I'm firmly convinced you would have to really go out of your way to eat a bad meal in that city.
It is the French gastronomic center, after all. I've only been a couple times on short visits when my aunt lived there.
This one would be my choice. It’s a take on Argentine tango composed by Moroccan pop star Hindi Zahra. It’s a beautiful song, I’ve actually danced to it at neo-tango milongas.
65. Or ideally before then. I never met anyone that took early retirement and regretted it. But I hear you on the vacation timing. Its tough to work all through summer but I do it anyway for those reasons you listed. Can't wait 'til mid-September.
The opening ceremonies on the Seine has been a fun change of pace from the regular stadium march. Just a shame the rain has really picked up as the event has proceeded.
Truly amazing performance to have this opening on the Seine river. Logistics and planning for this event must have been surreal. Respect to the organizers. Unique and spectacular. As an aside, the police and military around the site was insane. All flights over Paris are suspended as well and the airspace closed.
Agreed. I also like how they have integrated the other parts of the ceremony into the parade of nations part. IIRC, these 2 parts used to be completely separate, which made the parade of nations part seem a bit long and tedious. Gotta say though, its a unwatchable on American TV. Commercials literally every 4-5 minutes! WTF? Thank god for VPN! BBC providing uninterrupted coverage.
That's interesting because in New Zealand we are getting the British broadcast (I assume based on the announcers' accents), but lots of commercials here.
The #OlympicGames air exclusion zone right now is pretty stunning. pic.twitter.com/Jzqc2jk46l— Mark Stephens (@MarksLarks) July 26, 2024
Zizou, Rafa, Serena, Carl Leiwis, Nadia Comaneci….. this is truly special. So much inclusion as well…. Deaf rapper is taking over the show!
Just took a peak at NBC and they are even in a commercial break as I type this. Literally a minute or two before the flame is lit.
Did somethin today. 💯👊🏿🔥 #FollowTheDogg pic.twitter.com/G4ugnUFssO— Snoop Dogg (@SnoopDogg) July 26, 2024
Extremely happy to see Marie-José Pérec lighting the torch alongside Teddy Riner - so deserved ...and what a torch ! An obvious tribute to the Mongolfier brothers, who made their 'mongolfière' fly at the exact same place in 1783. https://www.parismuseescollections....ries-le-1er-decembre-1783-0#infos-principales
Celine Dion delivered a sublime interpretation of Edith Piaf's 'L'hymne à l'amour', undoubtedly one of the greatest song ever.
In case Argentinians need a new song "Escuchen corran la bola, serán de Francia pero juegan en Angola" https://www.threads.net/@mr.shark67...QGzoJ5QBys3CjfsAzANQ-Wi9Rg8MXNWB4zW7YyOeJIIzg
I've seen people pointing out how you don't have to be a total d-bag when you're super rich. You don't have to buy Twitter or JD Vance. You could just hang out with Martha Stewart and carry the Olympic torch briefly. Snoop is such a better role model than those rich Silicon Valley dickheads.
