I like the premise. I'm sure you won't find it at the local twentyplex, but it's worth keeping an eye on the local art house. Bend It Like Beckham Moderator, I apologize if this has already been posted. Feel free to merge the threads and then mock me if that's the case.
Recommended I actually saw "Bend It Like Beckham" on a Virgin Atlantic flight over the summer. It's a funny, charming, "My Big, Fat Greek Wedding" kind of a movie. I enjoyed it very much and wouldn't mind seeing it again. http://us.imdb.com/Title?0286499
I don't know why Chaski posted this in the world Rivalries board. https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=25161
a friend of mine just saw it in India and said it was really good. Of course, she is an NRI Sikh that plays soccer just like the girl in the movie, so I'm sure she could relate to it more than most folks, but her tastes are generally pretty good. She knew I wanted to see it and bought in on DVD for me (a whopping $3), but she didn't realize there was regional encoding. I've been thinking about getting a region free player, maybe this will provide enough reason to go ahead and do it.
You can download a trailer for the movie here- http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox_searchlight/benditlikebeckham/
I remember seeing ads for it while I was in England over the summer. Looks pretty good from the trailer. The parents might enjoy it too (they're from India).
I went to see Nicholas Nickelby on over the weekend (at my local art house), and there was a trailer for this one. It actually looked decent: too bad about that name in the title.
i saw "bend it like beckham" a few weeks back. friend brought it to me on VCD from New Dehli. it was quite good. definately a lot of indian humor than a lot of people won't get, but probably still enough there for everyone else to enjoy. i'm married to an indian woman, so i really enjoyed it.
Did you by any chance see "Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India"? I was surprised to like it as much as I did. Doesn't look like Bend it Like Beckham is coming anywhere near me, just yet. I hope that Pittsburgh's Indian and soccer communities can pull together on this one.
yeah, i was surprised by how much i liked it too. my inlaws are always trying to push bollywood productions on me (which "Bend It..." is not), but this one was actually good and I think deserving of the award nominations it received. i could do without the song & dance routines, but indians wouldn't go see it without them...
like i said in another thread it isn't so much a soccer movie as it is about indians in the diaspora. soccer is just the issue in the movie, it could've easily been interchanged with cricket, volleyball or any other sport. i am married to a first generation american from india so there is a lot in this movie others simply won't get. remember this movie was made in england and it has a huge indian population. i believe leicester is over 50% indian. there are several million indians living in america so it makes sense that it gets limited release in cities with huge indian populations: nyc, chicago, houston, atlanta, etc. it definately isn't for everyone.
you can buy several models of DVD players, press a few buttons on the remote and turn it into a region free player. there's a few threads in FFA about it.
after she brought it, i decided to see what was out there and did it and it worked. i started the DVD player conversion thread. thanks for looking out for me though.
Here's the link for anyone who needs it, anyway... i really don't see the use for region encoding, other than you have to buy that DVD in your country, and support it's economy. But for stuff that'll never be released in your country, you're screwed without this link: https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29524
i thought you were talking about this thread. similar, but different. https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=28051
it looks like "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" in that appears to be a conflict of parent and childs cultures from an immigrant family. My high school girlfriend who I still talk too as a friend but we go to different Colleges parents were from India. They really hate me when we started dating, they wanted her to date an Indian boy, (I'm mainly English and Irish) and told her that we American boys want one thing. I haven't seen it so I don't know if its any good or sucks but from the preview I would say charming romantic comedy good for dates and family.

Yay! Someone posted links to the trailer last year on one of the boards. I was hoping it would finally make it over here. Apparently Beckman and Posh actually have a cameo in the film. The producer wasn't sure how to approach him, but when he heard about it he wanted to do the cameo.
