England Scotland Wales and Northern Ireland all compete as the UK. As the name implies they're all under the same monarch. Interestingly though they all compete separately in soccer (FIFA) and the IFAB consists of those four plus four appointed by FIFA. Sepp Blatter hated that and tried for years to get it changed to lessen British influence ( and increase his own, giving him seven or eight seats and the ability to dictate the rules of the game) But Sepp having the ability to change whatever rule he wanted whenever he felt like it scared hell out of almost everyone. Although I do feel that his proposal to force female players to wear tight shorts was never given the consideration it deserved. Anyway, both arrangements were made as conditions for those 4 to join FIFA when it was formed. It's baked into the system and can't be changed.
They're running a poll on Outkick asking which you'd choose: a) Winning an Olympic Gols Medal or b) Having the whole world know you have a gigantic dick
I assume then that Northern Ireland (typo’ed as “Northern Island” in my query post) athletes then compete on “Great Britain” teams. But my question still remains: why do they compete in the Olympics as “Great Britain” and not “the United Kingdom”?
Soooooooo how do the "don't let men compete against women" folks feel about the mixed-gender events in swimming and athletics?
Apples and oranges. I actually think this is a great innovation. Each team has two men and two women, so there's no way anyone can argue unfair advantage or disadvantage. It's pretty cool to see, really.
It's really fun. A great innovation, particularly in track, although I'd like to see them do, like men vs men for the first leg, then women for the second, etc. because it's very hard to see who is actually in the lead at any given time. I saw a 4 by 4 the other day where one team had a huge lead going into the final leg, but then it was a girl for the leaders and a guy against her and he ran her down and won. Seemed unfair although of course it wasn't. Now if they were to allow the runners to occasionally punch one another in the face, that would change my opinion.
Reportedly, Patrick Schulte is leaving the athletes village today and heading home. Also heading home today is Luana Alonso, a Paraguayan swimmer who was asked to leave due to "inappropriate behavior". Coincidence? You be the judge.
I missed the first half on Saturday. My thoughts on the second half and overtime; Announcers were terribly annoying (was that Foudy?). The idea that the sweaper played like a sweaper apparently was crazy to them. Girma did fine, but anytime she did anything typical of her position they had to fawn all over her for no reason. The constant discussion about how gassed the US was and how dynamic Japan was. Japan parked the bus and tried to counter. They had a couple opportunities but, quite frankly, didn't even really look dangerous on the counter. Having said that... The US team did look listless. Albert was the only player showing for the ball. Admittedly that's her job in the role of the 6, but she would find the space, look to play forward and everyone (except Mal) was just standing in a line, so she would have to play back to the defenders. Smith and Rodman did very little in the 2nd half. Rodman did show occassionally and was getting back to help on defense too, but Smith was invisible. Admittedly, Smith showed better after moving to the 9 role in Extra Time when Swanson came out and Williams took her place. Then Williams proceeded to disappear. So, to be fair to both of them, it may have been something about being on the left wing. Either Japan has lock-down right defenders, or the US just didn't look to play to that side, or something. I'm losing patience with Horan. I know she still has the ability to take over a game (or at least a part of a game), but I'm just not seeing much of anything from her lately.
Here's a totally random tidbit: The 1997 Columbus Crew season started with a home game against Colorado on March 29th. The next weekend was the trip to Colorado on April 5th where the players had to buy long-sleeve shirts to wear under their jerseys. The weekend after that was a Sunday game (April 13th) against Dallas. Here's a match report: https://fbref.com/en/matches/3f8a6e64/Columbus-Crew-Dallas-Burn-April-13-1997-Major-League-Soccer Anyhoo...Simone Biles was born in Columbus the day after the game vs Dallas. It's fun to compare dates of different events. "Oh yeah, event A was happening on/about the same thing as this unrelated event which became relevant much later."
I'm watching The Daily Show and the host just spent a few moments on the pole vaulter. He said something about how, in the next Olympics, the dude should complete in the 100m race. It was mentioned while showing a picture of the dude who won by five one-hundredths of a second.
He broke his own old world record by 1cm. For those keeping score at home, that’s 0.4 inch, or slightly more than 3/8.”
