My daughter and one of her teammates from PeeWee soccer (4-5 year olds) are taking a soccer class together this winter. Yesterday her mom says to me "You know my son's basketball coach has missed the last couple of games because he's doing a tryout with D.C. United in Florida". "Oh", I reply "what's his name?" expecting to hear the name of some college kid. "He's called John .... oh what's his last name ... I know ... Harkes". Well when I finally pick myself up off the floor and stopped begging her to invite him to our kids' games this coming spring, I asked her if she knows who he is. Not a clue ... no idea ... she says he's the most unassuming person she's met (though she was a bit surprised how good he was juggling a basketball with his feet ). She was very surprised when I ran off a (incomplete) list of his accomplishments. Ah, the joys of being touched (second hand) by greatness .... Now just how do I get him out to coach my kid's team??
His son was on my best friends little brothers soccer team this past fall. Apparantly Mrs. Harkes was the team Mom, but I don't think Johnny was coaching.
So is your daughter willing to move from power forward to off guard if Harkes thinks that's what the team needs? Has he named a "captain for life" yet?
