I am confused about this. I was under the impression that they were playing their home games at Grünwalder Stadion this season, but tonight's game was at the Olympiastadion. What does it depend on?

Usually they play at they GRünwalder STadium as long as the Allianz Arena is still under construction but certain games which are considrered "high security games" have to be played at the olympic stadium.

Dynamo Dresen are known for bringing a kinda "impressive" support.

Games with a higher security risk, risk for crowd trouble.
I guess it's easier to keep the fans under control in the olympic stadium than in the city at the Grünwalder stadium.

They play games at the Olympic stadium that are going to draw (Frankfurt etc.)I think Dresden has a good following and thats why they played the game there. They are set to play in the new arena next season but it looks as though it's going to be as a second division team.

Hannover96Girl is absolutely right. Matches that are considered "high risk" status have to be played in Olympiastadion as it is easier to control the crowds for police and security service. The Grünwalder stadium hasn't got seperated entrances for guest and home fans, no video monitoring etc.

"High risk" status may be due to fans that are labelled "problematic" like Dynamo Dresden or due to expected high attendances like Frankfurt, Cologne etc.. At all the "Stadion an der Grünwalder Straße" is in middle of a residental area with no major public transportation system nearby.

Ah, okay. Thanks for the info everyone. I must say I can't stand the Olympic Stadium. That place has the absolute worst atmosphere I've ever experienced at a soccer game. You could have 30,000 people in there and it still sounds more like 30. Mungersdorf used to be a pretty sh!tty stadium too, but at least it had a good atmosphere.

The lack of atmosphere was very evident in die Munchener Olympiastadion when 1860 played, too; it seemed the away fans had more of a voice then they did. The move back to der Grunwalder was a great move, it has that old feeling and atmosphere that old stadiums only have (like at Fenway Pahk)

I would like--and I repeat like to assume that in the new Allianz arena the fans will be a little closer to the pitch?

Sorry for the delay--I had to go vote!

I am not a big fan of the Allianz Arena, especially the corporate name and the outside bubblewrap. I don't balme 1860 fans for wanting to stay at the old stadium. How big is it? and what is the average attendence for TSV?

    Glad you voted.
Well if you follow this link you get the information that the Grünwalder has a capacity of 28.000 but the games against Burghausen and Unterhaching were sold out and only 21.272 were there. I guess more aren't allowed in because of security risks and unsafe terraces, I don't know exactly.

Right now 1860 has an average attendence of 20.660.
    Some pics

I kinda like the Allianz Arena but it doesn't fit 1860, it's too posh for them, they don't have enough fans to fill it and it's too far away from the city center which is no a big problem for Bayern fans as most aren't from the city of Munich anyway but the fans of 1860 are.
The great thing about the Grünwalder is that it's located right inside the city in a residential area, I prefer those stadiums.

Where is the new stadium going to be located in regards to city center Munchen. Off of the Allianz Center site it said Fröttmaning was the location--where is this?

It's a suburb in the outskirts of Munich. It's pretty much nothing there, everything has to be build. I like the stadion, but the location is crap. The old Olympiastadium had a perfect location, in a big, green park in the city. There were lots of things you could do before and after the game, like going to the cinema, or to a bar, a Biergarden or just stay in the park and relax. When I lived in Munich I just had to walk 15min trough the park to the stadium, now all fans have to use car or public transport. I don't know how it will be in Fröttmanning, all i heard was that the have invested over 100m Euros in the infrastructure there.

IMO the best would have been to build the allianz arena in the Olympiapark and tear off the old stadium.

The stadium is located at Fröttmaning. Look at the map and search for (13) in the North. Where the two highways cross is the stadium (lower left corner). Fröttmaning is in the middle of nowhere, next to a waste dump.

Problem was and is that it wasn't possible to tear down the old stadium (listed building) and it was next to impossible to build a new stadium in or by the Olympic park as the clubs feared massive legal actions by the residents that could have delayed the building progress by years or could have even stopped it.

Out of app. 300 Mio Euro 100 Mio Euro are for the large parking decks (app. 10.000 parking lots). The public infrastructure will be developed by the city of Munich, state of Bavaria and federel authorities.

Awesome pictures. I'd much rather see a game there than at that graveyard of an Olympic Stadium. I also have to say it was a wise move for 60 to play their second division games at the Grünwalder Station. What better way to make the fans excited about the team again than to put them in that cozy atmosphere? This at least keeps the fans passionate until the team can make another run for the first division.

I would also guess that their current attendance isn't far below what they had in the Bundesliga.

I'd say it's splitted, but in general most say that it looks much better than the Olympiastadion and be honest, it is good if not all the stadiums look the the same, and it is something comlete new and different... I personally like it...
