Well.. after today's proceedings how do you have the team looking?

    ------------------ Hartman --------------

    Marshall ---- Lalas ------- Califf ------- Hong

    ----------------- Vaegnas ------------------

    ---- Cobi ------ Cienfuegos -------- Hendrickson

    ----- Pineda Chacon ------- Ruiz --------------

Bench : Victorine, Elliott, Glinton, Frye, Tennyson, Alright, Bardales jr., Moreno.

kinda like Arsenal, Inter, Real Madrid, Leverkusen, we got internationals and ex-internationals at every spot almost. We got a pretty stand-out team now, a known name at every position.

Is this the starting squad for opening day 2003 ?

Looks good but you don't see Victorine or Elliot starting?
    We also need another goalie!

sigi seemed to like the 3-5-2 formation last year, do you think he'd go back to a 4-4-2?

    what about

    Code:
    ------------ Hartman -------------
    ---Marshall --- Lalas --- Calif---
    ------------ Vagenas -------------
    Victorine -- Elliot -- Hendrickson
    -------------- Jones -------------
    --------------- Ruiz -------------

Damn, we got a REALLY deep squad now. Those extra games for the concacaf tourney shouldn't faze us so much. With some quality youth and the addition of Hong and APC we are signifagantly imptoved over last year. While APC seems like a gamble he proved he can play in a fluid attacking scheme in miami, but he didn't respond to the static English all defense type game Nichol had them playing in NE. I think LA is the perfect fit for him. Expect a lot of good things from him this year if defenses try to double team Ruiz this year Alex will make them PAY! With the additions of Lewis and Bo our already strong defense will be even better and deeper and we have a teen sensation/star of the future in Gonzalez. Good job Sigi. I say repeat in '03!

    Squad: (15)

    Albright
    Barton
    Callif
    Cien (Green Card)
    Glinton
    Hong (doesn't count)
    Hartman
    Ezra
    Cobi
    Lalas
    Marshall
    Tennyson
    Thompson
    Vaganas

    Guys to be Cut:

    Bengard, Frazzalle, Mehreioshoue, Frye

It would be nice if we picked up a backup goalie with some A league experience at least.

And Tennyson will likely develop into a great player also.. Things look very good for the future.
Perhaps more CONCACAF Championships on the way!

we may very well possibly be too deep... salar cap issues aren't buggin' us!? GREAT!
although i'm suprised at the people that didn't put hong in the starting line-up

    -----------hartman(new GK)---------------

    --califf(new D)--Hong(lalas)--Marshall(new D)--

    ---hendrickson(victorine)--vagenas(new mid)---

    Jones*(albright)-cien(memo,)-elliot(glinton)

    ----chacon(moreno)---ruiz(tennyson)----

these are in my opinion the more natural starters

    *=captain

these are in my opinion the more natural starters with the likely subs, not exactly in the same position i put them, most are more interchangeable especially in the midfield.

damn, i hate having to sit soo many quality players. its a good problem to have. at least all of them get time to play cuz of all the games we play this year.

i don't know why they put "doesn't count" but they meant the same thing as what cien has, he's got a green card. plus you guys left out herculez gomez off the roster, and i could be mistaken but i THINK i remember frye either being waived or traded to SJ... maybe it was someone else, i think like 3 of our guys went to SJ lol

Hong has had a green card for several years now.

I'd like to see a 3-5-2 similar to what Brazil used in the World Cup.

    GK: Hartman
    LCB: Califf
    CB: Hong
    RCB: Lalas
    LWB: Victorine
    RWB: Hendrickson
    DM: Elliott
    AM: Cienfuegos
    AM: Jones
    WF: Pineda Chacon
    CF: Ruiz

I think Sigi's biggest challenge this year may be team spirit, making sure that everyone is happy. We have a team that has many more possible starters than spots on the field. I am very excited about this roster and its potential, hopefully everyone will understand and accept their role for the good of the team.

Cien may be a sentimental favorite to start, and he may do so intially, but I do not see that lasting very long. Cien is a class act and I think he knows his role this year will be limited, and that this most certainly is his last year.

Nor do I see Lalas not starting at some point.

I see no reason why not to start Pineda Chacon - he didn't start for New England because they preferred to cross the ball into the box.

Given our success rate so far this offseason, I wouldn't put it past Sigi to pull Tim Howard out of a hat (hint hint)...

    what happened to the others...

it's good having new talent as ruiz might need some more help up in front as the last minute goals aren't very comforting but what happeed with Mullen and Reis were they cut or trade. And what's up with cienfuegos there's talk of him retiring if he doesn't get as much playing time. yeah he's old but he's got experience. hope he doesn't leave that'll be a gap to fill. also we'll miss them at the rose bowl when they go to their new home.too bad the bench is full of quality players adn everyone can't play.....
best of luck to them in the new season

Reis to New England for Pineda Chacon and a draft pick (a steal, IMO).

Mullan to San Jose for a draft pick.

They look damn good - several significant improvements over a team that just won the championship. Wow.

I see Hong as a nice upgrade over Califf. Perhaps now we can move Danny since so many teams that don't see him on a regular basis think he's a future star.

APC, whether used as a late game spark or as a complementary forward alongside Ruiz, will juice up our sometimes stodgy offense.

Our defensive depth will be much improved with Thompson and Lewis in the back rather than Frye.

And we finally have anointed the midfield general to be and will give Cien the time to work with him.

I think you are thinking of Craig Weibel who was waived and then picked up by the Quakes.

I see Hong as a nice upgrade over Lalas. Perhaps now Lalas can retire in piece, as he's not getting any younger.

Isn't Alexi slightly younger than Hong?

Probably, but both of them are definitely older than Califf.
So as much as we may think of Lalas (or not), he's only got a couple of years left at most.

LA Times speculates Bryheem Hancock of the Atlanta A-League team. Didn't we draft him last year?

Yes we did, Cadaver. I saw him play a few times for Atlanta, and was NOT impressed. Not up to MLS goalkeeping standards yet. But, I also thought Califf was destined for the A-League until the final 12-14 games last season!

BTW, I heard you slip in a plug for the upcoming soccer draft on the sportsnews update last Thursday morning. Maybe the 7:20am slot? Good for you!

I'm just a fan, not a talent scout, but if someone asked me which Galaxy player has caused me to curse more than any other, my answer would be -- without hesitation -- Danny Califf.
