Unlike the typical USA disposable phone from AT&T or disposable UK one from Virgin, the South African phones are now unlocked and can be used in Europe and Asia and various other countries, just buying a local sim card as you go. Even better than buying a South African phone, is buying a superior phone in Singapore and then paying as little as 1 rand for a South African sim card and adding airtime as needed. I bought 3 cheap phones for my arriving guests, 2 of which were used. There are still plenty of people in SA who will appreciate receiving a free mobile phone.
