1st cell phone ever was made in 1963. The first commercial cell phone, the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X, debuted in the United States in 1983. It was the first handheld mobile phone available for purchase and launched on the first US 1G network by Ameritech. The one I had belonged to the Town. We paid just $15 a mo. but $.40 per min for calls. 911 calls were freebies.
My brother had something like that in his car in the late 80's. I didn't get a mobile until the early 90's IIRC. I forget the make and model.
My brother and several coworkers who worked around the country would do their fantasy baseball drafts that way in the ‘80s “station to station collect call from Don Mattingly in Grand Rapids.”
There is a story about lefty online influencers and them trying to organize a response to Charlie Kirk College tour. Well, the first attempt went well, but like good democrats, they started fighting with each other right away, and now they have fallen apart. The Democratic traditions are in good hands.
Isn't that the problem with most of online media. People seem more interested in arguing than having a meanful discussion and aligning on something. No surprise that they started fighting right away.
As someone commented, the right wing does the same, but they want power so their fights like the H1 visa thing, flare up, they fight but then they go back to trolling us on the left. Lefty online personalities hold grudges and stay mad at each other. The Idea of putting shit to the side in order to gain power is not there. Part of it is that they are young, swallowing your pride for the team comes with age.
I think that guys nominally 'centrist' or 'independent' position isn't wholly believable but, yeah... there have always been people on the left that prefer to argue with people on the left than with the opposition.
54% of young Americans are embarrassed by the country, that seems a bit high, I would like to see the source of that stat. If the leaders in the Democratic Party keep encouraging and not rebuking the idea that America is cringe, and the people who run Gaza are great, the Democrats are doomed. pic.twitter.com/1Y11IGriwt— Bill Maher (@billmaher) May 10, 2025
"Democrats are doing X (or not doing Y) and therefore I have no choice but to vote for fascism!!!!111" Same old bullshit
Bill Maher is representative of the kind of Democrat who will cheer the whole looking forward and not back, don't upset the current situation, embrace fascist policies but competently and quietly. Don't fix the fundamental problems and be shocked when this all happens a third time. F***" him and everyone like him.
DNC looking to get rid of David Hogg. DNC credentials committee approves a resolution challenging the Feb. 1 vice chair elections of David Hogg and Malcolm Kenyatta. Will advance to full DNC. Justification from DNC Chair Ken Martin is a procedural error. Statement from David Hogg: "Today, the DNC took its first steps to remove me from my position as Vice Chair At-Large."
Two more aides left John Fetterman’s office in recent weeks, the latest in a stream of staff exits amid the senator’s shifting political persona and questions about his health. He's up for re-election in 2028. https://www.politico.com/news/2025/05/13/fetterman-staff-00344618
He's another one of those who's 'on the left' because he says he is. For people like him being 'on the left' just means he wants to smoke weed and screw around. He's an oddball anyway. Can't maintain a relationship with a women. A bloke of nearly 70 who's never been married or had a long term relationship.
Same ol, same ol with you. On one hand, there is Democratic bickering. On the other hand, we have MAGA influencers being financed by the Kremlin to push Russia's agenda.
Democrat wins in Nebraska: Unironically probably the most effective messaging Democrats have ever done on trans issues https://t.co/cJNzy5JaCb pic.twitter.com/xSnje11Euz— Adam Carlson (@admcrlsn) May 14, 2025 And he's black! Maybe there's hope? @Knave
The GOP outside of Trump is the kind of weird you make it a point to be as far away from as possible.
I suspect he almost certainly votes democratic but then spends all his time telling other people why they shouldn't vote democratic. Regarding his 'contrarian' take on things... I don't actually mind a bit of contrarianism, (I can be pretty contrarian myself on occasion), as it can serve to refine and improve arguments of which I'm generally in favour. But it has to be based on SOME sort of logic or reason. You can't just make shit up, take things our of content and accept right-wing talking points without providing the counter argument. As for his argument that some on the left think that Hamas is 'great', basically because they're a tad squeamish about watching small children being bombed and starved on their colour tellies... Jesus H-fecking christ, Maher... get a grip, man!!!
I've rarely watched Maher over the year but his schtick seems like the cable version of clickbait and if I spend my time avoiding clickbait content online, I certainly wouldn't search it out on cable (if I actually had cable).
