"State rights" Those words bring a lot of dark memories for liberals, but one thing Democrats need to learn to live is State governments, we need to do much better at local elections and state elections. States are the only protections we are going to have over the next 4 to 8 years.
I'm pretty sure we're going to find that states rights are only important when it's a right that the Republican Party agrees with.
I'm still surprised Reagan didn't do this. To be sure, I was 19 when he was elected. And I was shocked that public libraries still existed when he left office.
Remember that scene in Interstellar when the teacher berates Mr Alright Alright Alright for teaching his daughter fake history that man walked on the moon and the truth is instead it was a Hollywood stunt? And everyone thought that was ridiculous and over the top? That's going to be so quaint by comparison.
Let's stipulate that standing back and letting the arsonists burn everything, demonstrating the real effects of what voters chose, paves the way for a resurgent Democratic Party. To date, discussion of Operation: Phoenix has concerned domestic stuff: tax policy, gutting the civil service, immigration, tariffs, general fukcery. What about the international angle, though? American institutions may be able to tolerate, or even thrive after, this cleansing fire, but what's left of Ukraine/Gaza/NATO/etc., not so much. What happens above-ground, after we emerge from our time in the silo? (I'm really waiting for that show to come back, BTW)
Another link apropos to this thread: https://blueprint2024.com/polling/why-trump-reasons-11-8/ In a nutshell: inflation, immigration, transgender.
Two things…immediately stop with the fake niceties about your friends on the other side of the aisle (pretty close to done in the house not as much in the senate. These guys are your political enemies who seek to actively harm your constituents. Treat them like it…at least in public. Second…no big speeches about fighting for the American people when they introduce legislation that is going to harm your constituents. Every message…from every single one of you…should be…if you voted for us…we’re terribly sorry this happened to you. If you voted for them….we ********ing told you this would happen. They ********ing told you this would happen. You voted for this. And I don’t care what the forum or audience is. Use the word “********ing “
I read this: Democrats Deserved to Lose - Josh Barro, The Atlantic - Archive Link Then I read this: Here's the Plan to Fight Back - Elizabeth Warren, Time And my immediate visceral reaction to Elizabeth Warren was you've got your head up your ass and you're full of shit.
Merrick Garland and Biden say you can't do that. You have to protect the institutions and let the process and niceties play out. Pelosi said we needed a strong GOP or we couldn't govern correct. It takes a long time to change things. The bourgeoisie know what's best for you. Now here we are. Of course what they never accepted is it takes all of 5 minutes to break things.
Yeah I've been thinking it was in outpatient therapy for a while now. Does the prospect of a scorched earth future, globally, make any difference to the wisdom of getting out of the way domestically, v. doing all possible to mitigate global damage? It's one thing to torch (through omission) our own house, but letting the street burn is a bigger deal. Assuming we have a choice, which we may not. Emotionally I'm having a hard time with the idea that the best way to deal with this sh!t-gibbon is to kiss off the whole shebang. Recognizing that it may be the case that it's kissed off anyway and we are simply waiting for reincarnation.
At this point, if you believe in the supernatural then start praying. If you don't, then do what you need to do to protect yourself and your family from the multiple storms (political, environmental) that will be hitting the nation and the world.
I didn't have it on my 2024 Bingo card that this would be the year I gave up my faith, as well as my kids doing the same, but here we are
Quite honestly, I don't think it's Dems, I think it's Trump. The reason I say it is the Dems did better downballot and there's still a possibility the House flips. Case in point, Slotkin won Michigan. I say this as I've seen anecdotes about the Presidential part of ballots being filled out but not downballot. Going to hammer that Trump just has that appeal. Dude always has. Also ripped off from another post I made: A thing I keep forgetting is that I grew up meeting actual billionaires through my parents line of work and I grew up in an affluent area (I lived not too far from where Mitt Romney grew up) where Trump would just be considered a boor. To people who don't live in that kind of world, Trump's an aspiration.* Unsurprisingly, my county went blue while Macomb**, the county next to me went red yet again. That place, barring maybe one or two towns is more working class and Reagan Dem type. *: I remember reading about someone on the Apprentice and he was a wealth manager. Guy mentioned how a lot of people were commenting on how rich Trump seemed and he's thinking about how he met wealthier. And having been inside Trump Tower myself, the place just feels generic. **: Macomb is weird in a lot of ways, but I'll never forget the tangent my mother once went on about how much she hated the place. Her description of the place explains why they love Trump and the GOP now.
I have been in this space for over 30 years. Between the rise of the Newt movement (no collaboration, small government) to the money inherent in the overall system, I think the current system is not sustainable. I keep saying that all we need is a "good war" for the country to fix itself (Note: I don't want a war. I'm anti-war.). The other factor is capitalism and what course it runs in the world. I thought globalism would be bringing us closer, but unfortunately, the US hasn't figured out away to provide an opportunity for those in the middle class. Their costs have increased and opportunity has decreased. Neither party has put forth a path forward which has popular support. Taxing the rich and spreading more to lower classes? Seems to be falling on deaf years for many decades. Improve your education and get better jobs? Cost and lack of incentive (or opportunity) rears it's ugly head. So, how do we perform a controlled burn? I don't have the answers, but it would look like: Immigration Reform - start with stronger limits and work on rolling back overtime (Yes, I know that we need immigrants for our economy to continue to be good). Tax Reform - Flat tax rates Education Reform - Significantly reduce the cost of college Housing/Living Wage - provide a housing plan for everyone and provide incentives (or have the government build housing. Is this through the Democratic Party or a new party? May be they are one in the same. The one area that I don't have an answer is religion and it's impact moving forward. Going full "no religion" doesn't seem to be the answer, but having the religion be part of the government is not something that I can accept. Good thread by the way. Thanks everyone for their thoughts and feedback. FUD is going to be difficult to overcome.
The Dems will come up with a great plan and ideas.. probably have them set for the mid-term.. but it wont matter, the country and government will never again function how its supposed to..MAGA won, the plague will finish covering the country.. The thing is.. If things get as ********ed as we all think they will be, then the MAGAts must know theres no going back…. they know that once people see theyve been lied to that theyll never be forgiven for all the suffering…this was a one way trip to oblivion.. MAGAts won, they will run their agenda and they know they must never give up power back to the people… To be fair, the reality is likely..even if people eat a shit sandwhich for 4-12 years (Pres Vance baby!!) the population is stupid enough to vote in the MAGAs in again…
If the US is going to keep bringing back manufacturing, even if a lot of it is automated, I'd imagine we are going to need labor in the format of immigration. Not sure what the overall demand will be.
I've been thinking a lot about this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernie_Bro?wprov=sfla1 And this: https://www.cnn.com/2020/01/24/politics/bernie-sanders-joe-rogan-endorsement/index.html Not saying we should have nominated Sanders. Just saying this could have turned out differently. Much differently.
Give me a break. Bernie can't even win the primaries against Biden and Clinton, and he lost the PA primary against both. He lost the MI and WI primaries against Biden, and only narrowly won the MI primary against Clinton. Not to mention that he would absolutely get slaughtered by the latino voting bloc in a federal election due to the socialism branding
