Post-match: So what is next for the Democratic Party? (Post 2024)

The Latino assessors of both campaigns are doing the rounds in Spain and the fallout seems pretty clear. Democrats did not resonate as expected with women. Republicans won by making sure that they focused on the economy.

In my opinion, a Clinton like focus on the economy would have won this election for the Democrats. Obama-era racial equality politics (Progress, Hope, Change) did not cut it this time around. Also, Obama's campaign had a fair amount of help from Biden who seemed to be able to resonate with blue-collar workers. Tim Walz was not able to do that at all for Harris.

 

More confirmation. Starr county is essentially completely Latino and working class. Their voting has changed beyond all recognition in just 8 years.

I keyed in on this bit, I confess with more than a little "but, but..."

Taking [idea] as self-evident and proceeding from that conceit is a flawed approach, tempting (and "right") though it may be seem. I've been guilty of that. I think that people and party, there needs to be a frank examination of base facts, root causes, and true statements. To help start conversations not for the salons of the coastal elites but for the barroom, the workplace, the front yard (or park).

 

Keep your passport handy when the bubbas decide to start rounding immigrants up into camps.

What I think from seeing the breakdown of voters: majority of american voters are only motivated by their fear/hatred of new immigrants and/or how much money in their pocket

So tailor your messaging to focus on those two issues, and add abortion rights and weed legalization to differentiate them from the GOPs. Everything else is secondary

For the democratic voters, if they really want to make sacrifices for the country, start moving in droves to the swing states, starting with PA, NC and GA

 

Basically, you compete in elections with the electorate you have, not the electorate you think you deserve.

 

Goes for issues too. I'm pretty progressive and I think a lesson I'm working with is, don't try to shoot the moon all the damn time.

The "nominate a woman" didn't work in 2016 with a white woman. Why the hell did they think it'd work with a woman of color?

 

You meet voters as they are and where they are.

Somehow Dems and liberals never really learn this lesson.

 

The original sin was Biden seeking a second term.

 

In hindsight perhaps the Dems could have afford to spend the whole month of August doing a nation-wide flash primaries to select the nominee. At least they would get the nominee that the people actually want, instead of somebody that was shoehorned.

The primaries would have served as a marketing campaign for the eventual nominee as well, since it would have been covered in all major news media. So it's not like a lot of campaigning time would be lost.

I have a friend who came here from Ireland when he was nine years old and who wants to shut the door behind him to further immigration. Assuming that all immigrants are in favor of more immigrants is bad trap to fall into.

 

Right so the fix involves trying to step back from all the sanctimonious and getting real. It's a process.

 

I'm not sure the lack of a proper primary after Biden withdrew really was that big of a deal. But even so, was there any realistic way of organizing and conducting a nationwide primary process in such short notice? Were there any serious contenders that could have put together any sort of platform?

 

Yup. Drop the lefty piousness. Appeal to people as they are.

 

Yeah, judging from last night's results, I don't think american voters are educated or care enough about platforms. It's all about vibes and slogans.

On the logistics of conducting crash primaries, I don't know much about this to be frank. Maybe it is impossible. The next best choice is probably to let the 3900 delegates vote for it then while encouraging the big party names (not just Kamala, but also Newsome, Pete, Shapiro, etc.) to throw their hats into the ring
