We've got books, we've got DVDs, why not CDs? I know people are buying those left and right, so let's see what you're spending your money on: I bought a handful last night (I was in a classical mood): Erkki Sven Tuur: Violin Concerto Alfred Schnittke: Symphony #4 & Three Sacred Songs Ferde Grofe: Death Valley Suite Bright Sheng: Orchestral Works Witold Lutoslawski: Double Concerto Ned Rorem: Three Symphonies David Diamond: Symphony #1 Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra: Japanese Orchestral Favorites
I almost bought that too last night. I would've loved to have seen the look on the clerk's face. A big pile of classical CDs & Outkast
Dave Matthews, Some Devil. 50 Cent, Get Rich or Die Trying. (stop giggling, it was on sale for 11 bucks, basically free) Kelly Clarkson, Thankful. (ditto) Honestly, I am very pleasantly surprised by Some Devil. I put it into the CD player last night, and haven't taken it out yet. Of course, I had pretty low expectations, so that probably helped. A rainy-day type album, but it accomplishes what it sets out to do. Only a couple of duds amongst the 14 tracks. Trey Anastasio and the Seattle Symphony both add an awful lot to a handful of tracks each. I think it was only 14 bucks, with a bonus CD of stuff from his acoustic winter tour. Worth a look if you're into his sound.
Earth vs. the Wildhearts. The Wildhearts rock. If you like good ol' rock n' roll buy yourself a Wildhearts CD. Also suggested: Riff after Riff after Motherf***incg Riff (also) by the Wildhearts and Supagroup's latest.
Dave Matthews "Some Devil" and Limp Bizkit "results may vary" for 10 each at best buy...next tues: STING!
Bought some for a trip in the car at the weekend, most of them in the HMV Sale. Is it me or are record stores turning into discount carpet warehouses in that there seems to be a permanent sale on. Muse - Absolution Joni Mitchel - Court and Spark Mazzy Star - So Tonight That I might See Placebo - Without You I'm Nothing.
They're doing that with a lot of back catalogue stuff just to pump some life into the struggling industry. Unfortunately, most of the stuff I buy is pretty obscure and that almost always equals full price.
That Outkast CD is a great one. This thread reminds me that I probably haven't bought a CD in nearly a month -- I'm usually good for one every week or two, it seems. But the last 2 I bought were: Junior Senior: "D-D-Don't Stop the Beat" BT: "Emotional Technology"
Mike Doughty, former head of Soul Coughing, has put out a 6 song cd while fans wait for his a full album, which is coming eventually. The cd is excellent.
got these about a week ago "it still moves"- My Morning Jacket "Hocus Pocus"- Enon "HaHa Sound"- Broadcast "Clearlake"- Cedars "Her Majesty the Decemberists"- the Decemberists and i should be getting these in the mail soon "Ode to Joy"- Deadly Snakes "Yoko"- Beulah "IMA Robot"- IMA Robot
Just saw that ten minutes ago in the used bin. Don't really know about it, but it spurred me to go look for Marc Ribot's Cubanos Postizos -- didn't find it thought. Let me know what you think of those two--Yoko got a decidedly mixed review in an earlier thread. My lunchtime splurge: Roughguide compilation: Music of India Super Furry Animails: Phantom Power The Clientele: The Violet Hour Bright Eyes: Lifted, or . . . The Swan Silvertones: The Swan Silvertones and Saviour Pass Me Not (2 in 1 CD) This last album is from one of the most righteous gospel groups ever to be beamed directly down to earth from big puffy clouds in the sky. Rockin, rollin', soul-shakin stuff -- even for us lapserian agnostic whatevers who've, shall we say, strayed from the path some time ago. Highly recommended.
The Black Keys - Thick Freakness. The Jam - some best of thing. and a goofy collection of 60s hits - 5 cds, each with a theme. e.g. Flower Power. All of the above picked up at the used cd store.
I've only listened to about 3/4s of it in the car so far, but I *really* like it. I've not heard too many of their songs and I've been debating which album to start with for a while. But I saw the new one for good price used yesterday and snagged it. Really rich sounding -- I just noticed Mario Caldato who produces the Beasties was involved. Some songs, like Golden Retriever, have sort of a 70s feel in a good way. I also really like the strings and horns and backing vocals and such. Unless I was high on the way home yesterday I'll probably pick up another of their albums.
The Mars Volta: De-Loused in the Comatorium In-friggen-credible. Haven't taken it out of the car cd player in two weeks.
One of the best CDs I've heard this year. I listened to it 5 or 6 times in a row after it arrived in the mail yesterday.
