Who should the Charge take, if anyone, in the waiver draft? Will there even be one player taken  since last year's draft didn't?

    Draft order is as follows:
    1. New York
    2. San Diego
    3. Boston
    4. San Jose
    5. Atlanta
    6. Charge
    7. Washington
    8. Carolina

How did the Charge get ahead of the Freedom?

I would pick Ronnie Fair or Allie Kemp, but I don't think either one will make it down the list to the Charge.

Allie Kemp to the Power, to replace Fair
Ronnie Fair to the Spirit, to replace Kester

It's in reverse order of the final league standings. The league champion is 8th, the runner-up 7th, the semifinalists 6th and 5th and so on. So the team with the worst record, NY, picks first.

Charge don't need any more bodies to add to camp, they'd just be training camp fodder.

I have my projected 20 posted elsewhere.

Too cruel to bring is someone except if the injury bug hits.

    Two things:

1] The Power have NO CLUE!
2] It's the Leagues way of getting players closer to home. [ Kester's married and wants to be on the Courage, Allie Kemp got married and is living in SD and Ronnie lives on the west coast and her boy friend lives on the west coast, look for the CRays to pick her up. ]

But I'm going with #1! The Power have NO CLUE!

I agree with you about the Power having "NO CLUE" when it comes to releasing players, especially those like Fettig who I think started 21 straight games for them and Fair who started 42 straight. Since the Spirit are a west coast team and they are down to I believe only four defenders on their roster (Sauer, Pickup, Fawcett, & Tanaka), do you think they might take Ronnie in the draft tomorrow?

It is a minor point, but Allie Kemp said on "Inside Soccer" yesterday that she actually lives in Boston with her husband. However, Allie did grow up here and it sounded like her husband would be willing to relocate to San Diego with her, if Allie can get a job with the Spirit.

    Oh, sorry! Allie :)

Everybody I talk to wants Ronnie for their team. I want her in Philly, but I think, she ends up on the west coast. I'm glad I live in Philly, and not in NY.

As long as one CA team picks up Ronnie it'll be somewhat convenient for her.. Mom is in SF and Fiance is in LA.. either way it's easier on May to fly to SD or drive to SJ than to have to fly to NY like in the past.. -Rita

With a 16 person roster for the season, I don't think San Jose has room to keep her on the final 16.

Now, if she wants to be a reserve, that's a different story.

As to players wanting to be near their home or boyfriend, there's going to be fierce competition for roster slots, so, unless you're a serious starter, then it might not be easy to get onto an other roster.

As to New York, Sermani is taking apart that team, and retooling. When you had the year they had last year, changes are in order.

Asd to New York having no clue, well, the Wagner move tells all.

But in that case, I'd agree, the move was to appease Wagner and Welsh. In those situations, players or Welsh and Wagner status can pull off their requests.

Let's see who gets picked up today.

I'm not sure what the fuss is about Ronnie Fair. She's small, can't move laterally, no vision - just like half of NY's roster.

I would have done what Sermanni did, maybe more. I would have protected only 12 from that bunch of losers, maybe eventually turn two of those into reserves. A new coach needs to mold the team as he sees fit. Getting new blood helps, but getting rid of dead weight helps even more. If I could cut founders, I would have done so too.

Orlandos is a good start for New York.

It's take Fan if I was New York.

And if Boston bypasses on McDowell, I'd take McDowell.

You forgot that Ronnie can't pass the ball also. By the way Sermanni did only protect 12 players. Drafted players don't count againt the 12-16 numbers.

I don't see anyone being drafted today. Money wise, it makes more sense to just invite the player in, unless you think she may want to try-out for another team. Fan is making way too much money to be picked up, so I don't see NY doing that either.

Why wouldn't New York select mcDowell??

She already has a relationship with Pia, and I could imagine Pia having interest in McDowell..

And McDowell could have interest in Carolina...

Totally odd for McDowell to be traded for Makinen and then waived...

Prior realtionship aside, I'm not sure I understand why we, (Boston), should take McDowell?

The question is, what style team defensively will Boston put out there.

Since, Pia was given full reign defensively with the Charge, I imagine a similar style as the Charge.

The Charge go with TWO oriented mids, one to harrass the other teams creative mid, well before the other team gets into the Charge defensive third, make it very difficult to play forward with tons of time.

Monroe and McDowell, BOTH filled that role.

Hawkins, to me, has too much offensive talent to use in that role.

At worst, McDowell can be a sub off the bench to fill that role.

You can argue, a 16 person squad precludes having a defensive specialist.

New York clearly needs to upgrade their defensive presence on the pitch.

If Boston doesn't, we shall see what they do..

My assumption is Boston missed the play-offs due to defensive woes.

McDowell would be an upgrade, in my opinion, but Sundhage may judge she can get more out of her existing personnel.

And she's got the history to prove it.

Like I said, no one was drafted in the waiver draft, due to money issues.

    By the way:

All 25 players (with the exception of Rebekah McDowell) are unrestricted and may re-enter the league through the tryout process. The lone exception, McDowell was not eligible for the Waiver Process due a pending trade between the Washington Freedom and the Philadelphia Charge. The trade, which sent McDowell to Washington for Anne Makinen on February 2, 2003, is dependent on the Finnish international's immigration status.

    contains :

For her part, Mäkinen, who is expected to get her green card and not count against the Charge’s international player limit, also is pleased to being playing for Krikorian after all these years.

    We shall see.

Also, didn't a draft choice go to DC in that trade??

    what becomes of it??

Yes. The pick that Washington used to select Ruth Montgomery was part of that deal.

It doesn't sound like the deal's dead, just that it won't be finalized until Makinen's green card goes through.

But what if it doesn't? Reversing the trade will be interesting, because Washington now has four internationals on its roster...so there's no room for Makinen in D.C. now, either.

Just my opinion after watching McDowell for the last two years- she slow to react and turns the ball over constantly. She can run forever, though. I thought she was more effective than Monroe, who seemed really weak to me.

WUSA will make something up so Makinen can playe here.

Look at the Latham matter, just make it up as you go along.

Monroe and McDowell purpose was defense, to destroy what other teams do in midfield BEFORE they get into the final third.

I'd agree, neither has talents like Tullock, but they serve a very vital role.

Defense is often overlooked, all the glory goes to Smith and Pichon and Zhao.

i agree with adam, both are good in their way...the whole makinen thing, i dunno, but i agree, they make alot up as they go along...that was a total screwjob SD pulled with latham...i would have pulled their 2nd round pick in exchange for taking latham like that personally, that was very shady.

I wouldnt die of shock if WUSA weasels some way to let Iverson goto boston with some league based compensation (like an extra allocation in 2004 or draft picks) there is precident for this...remember WUSA made the rule up that if a founder gets pregenant that a team could claim a late rounder in 2001...who turned out to be Kim Pickup.

do i think it would happen...naahhh...and i hope it doesnt, but WUSA has been way too flexible with its rules and could be listed pretty high on the "if this league fails this is one reason why" list.

Iverson isn't a part of the ussf mafia, she ain't a national team member, and Pia isn't gonna get a break from the brotherhood.

I don;t know what to make of Iverson.

The real story is a mystery.

Clearly Karvellson retired, and is moving on.

I guess EI still wants to lace up her boots.
