Having applied for tickets in the first phase, just to see if I can get lucky in the lottery, it's now full steam ahead for the holiday of a lifetime. And it doesn't come cheap.

Admittedly, I'm not one for backpacking, so i'm going to be spending a huge amount on this trip.

For me, 18 nights accommodation, flights (external & internal) and 3 knockout games (2 tix each) has cost 5100 GBP.

By the time I get back in July, I think it'll be nearer 11000 GBP (remaining 4 games permitting!) for 2 people.

A friend of mine is off to Cape Town for Christmas and is looking at a 3000 GBP spend.

So i'm thinking that my visit is not too bad!

Anyway, what have you spent and are you content with the cost?!

So you're only going for 1 game?

For me, so far I've spent:
round-trip airfare JFK to CPT: $2000.
    Tickets to four matches: $1500
18-nights hotel in centre of Cape Town: $4000

    Expenses still to come:
    - 3 nights hotel in wine-country (~$500)
    - 5 days for Namibia safari (~$1500)
    - round-trip airfare: Cape Town to Namibia (~$500)
    - 5-day car rental to drive around the Western Cape (~$300)

Total about $10,300. Not too bad considering I'm gone for almost a whole month. That said, this will probably be my last world cup ever. Each WC costs 50-100% more than the previous one. Especially since I have no burning desire to go to Brasil.

The Slovenia game is England's last match. Don't you mean, you'll be leaving after the England v Algeria match?

BocaFan - not too shabby for 18 nights of hotel. You have a nice agenda planned - you running any group packages? Hehehe. We're just getting started with the tickets and flights solid - accomodations (ugh) still in the works, plus the extras. I'll post again once it's finalized but we're also thinking about 10k. However we're a mess since we're only in SA for 9 nights, then fly to Amsterdam for Sensation White, then to Nice, France for beach and recovery before returning back to the US. Remarkably we got great deals on all the flight by booking mostly one way tickets - far cheaper (33% off) than what we say with a series of round trips. Bizarre...

    So far (for 2)...

Airfare - Savannah, Ga to JNB - $4,400 (roundtrip)
Airfare - JNB to PE - $300 (one way)
    Car Rental - 15 days - $1,000
    Lodging - 16 nights - $2,250
    Tickets - 7 Matches - $1,600
    Bungy Jumping - $180
    Pilanesberg/Sun City day trip - $300

This is just over $10,000. I expect to spend about $2-3,000 more on food/drink/gas/gifts while there. Definately not cheap, but I will remember it forever.

What is it with bungee jumping and South Africa?!? Is this the premier place to do it? I know someone who visited South Africa and also went bungee jumping there.

I'm not really sure if it is a big deal all over South Africa, but the Bloukran's Bridge near Plettenburg Bay is billed as the highest bungy jump in the world (over 200m/700ft). My wife and I are driving by the bridge anyway, so we figured why not.

I've done the bloukrans bungee and it's brilliant. Unfortunately it's not the biggest in the world anymore as the James Bond Dam (in Switzerland) one is about 3 metres higher. Still if you're in SA you have got to do the bungee.

The great white shark diving is worth a visit as well although i'm not sure if it'll be the right season for them

wow... all I can say is that I sure am glad I did my South African tour (SAF, Botswana, Zambia, Zimababwe, Malawi) last summer and not this summer. Spent about a fraction as you guys but of course.. there was no WC then so all I can say is have fun! :D

yes it will be the right season. Great white's eat the seals which the cold water brings so the winter time is perfect - we saw at least 6 sharks each day. But due to weather conditions I don't think this is the time of year to do deep sea diving - I inquired about it but nobody seemed to be operating during that time. Can always go to Mozambique for that. Anyhoo... some footage I got from the great whites - would definitely recommend it:

Ok so I've been sending out boatloads of enquiries at sa-venues and sleeping-out and haven't been very successful. But this morning I got an enquiry back, and it seems like a good deal but I dunno if it is too good to be true:

    "Thank you for your enquiry.

is fully booked but I have an apartment for 3 with 3 single or 1 single + double bed.

The price is 1300/ night but will give it for R990/night

Please let me know if I can book it for you ?

    Regards"

Should I email them back and ask for more information? At first I was elated but now I think that it may be some sort of scam...thoughts?

Oh, and so far, I've spent about:
$750 for tickets to 4 matches
$1500 roundtrip from NYC to Jo'burg

If you used SA Venues then there should be no problem. Surely as you contacted them it is unlikely to be a scam though the special offer seems a bit of a laugh. When would they actually charge R1300 if not during the tournament?!
