Ever get the impression defence agencies have a quick smoke before deciding what to throw at Saddam? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/middle_east/2919249.stm Next up? Rocket propelled buffalo. You heard it here first.
Well not to worry. Apparently you Americans are too stupid to understand the subtle nuances of the British sense of humour... Seriously though, I just found the idea of lobbing whacking great big chunks of concrete at Saddam and his army, rather amusing given the massive array of deadly firepower to hand. Also taking into account the US love of making the bombs bigger and more deadly (JDAMs, MOABs etc), we on the other hand, chuck rocks. Precision guided rocks though. Which is also a rather quaint almagamation of old and new.
actually, american air power is using the same things. i saw a report on cnn about a week ago saying that these 'concrete' bombs would be used in the city of baghdad to prevent 'collateral' damage in the city when attacking weapons in residential neighborhoods. it is kinda funny isn't it? filled a bomb with some concrete and dropping it out of the sky...sounds like the whole 'killing somebody by dropping a penny from the empire state building' theory...
No, I got the humor thing, and it wasn't all that subtle. I just meant I couldn't come up with a smart-ass comment like Garcia did...at the time. How about: "This gives new meaning to bombing the Iraqis back to the stone age." "The British truly rock." "In the early days of war, battles were faught with sticks and rocks. Then came arrows, then gunpowder, then guns, then laser guided bombs...Now, were back to rocks. Laser-guided rocks."
This is actually an excellent idea: A weapon that can be guided to the target and takes it out with minimal collateral damage. It's good to see the British making concrete progress on this front.
