Beira-Mar reach the 9,000 paid club members, hope to have 10,000 by season end.

Portugal opens new 65,000-seat stadium for Euro 2004

LISBON (AFP) - Portuguese club Benfica unveiled their new state-of-the-art, 65,000-seat stadium which will host the final of next summer's Euro 2004 finals.

"I want to congratulate Benfica and all those who made this great project possible," Prime Minister Jose Manuel Durao Barroso told the crowd at the stadium, which was packed to capacity despite driving rain, before the start of a 45-minute light and fireworks festival to mark the occasion.

Benfica, the club with the biggest fan base in Portugal, faced Uruguayan team Nacional in a friendly at the end of the light show.

Former Benfica star Eusebio performed the opening kick-off for the match as thousands of fans, many wearing red club scarves, applauded.

Dubbed the "new cathedral to football", the stadium - Portugal's largest - took two years to build and cost of 160 million euros (189 million dollars).

More than a quarter of the cost of the stadium was swallowed by the construction of the roof, which is made of a lightweight transparent building material, policarbonate, that lets in natural light.

Other features include two large screens on either end of the pitch and a 1,000 square metre (10,760 square foot) locker room for the players.

Benfica won the European Cup twice in the 1960s but has not won a title since 1994.

Under Jose Antonio Camacho, who coached Spain in last year's World Cup, Benfica now lie six in the premier league however many fans and players hope the new venue will help revive the dwindling fortunes of the club.

"With the new stadium I think a new cycle will open for everyone," Benfica captain Helder Cristovao told daily newspaper Correio da Manha.

The stadium is one of ten which Portugal is building or renovating at a cost of some 800 million euros in order to host the tournament, which will take place from June 12 to July 4.

Up to three million people are expected to visit because of the championships, the biggest international sports event ever held in Portugal.

With 140,000 socios, how come none of them go to the new stadium.

Sporting is averaging over 30,000 a game.

Maybe they should go watch their team once in a while.

Benfica has no clue no scheme and no ability.

That is why the fans don't go.

    1) Of those 140,000 socios, I would venture to say that 90% of them are out of the Lisbon area, many out of the country
    2) Benfica is rebuilding, with many young players that they are working into the fold. The last I checked, Sporting's best young talent was shipped to Man U (Ronaldo) and Barcelona (Quaresma)
3)If no scheme means that we don't take falls, start fights, and play a disgracefully unsportsmanlike style, you are right, we have no scheme.

don't forget Benfica only played around 3 games at home, the other games where played at the national stadium , Sporting was the first to have the stadium ready, Porto will play there first game at home this Saturday, the barometer will be set for next year, hope the league can average more then 10,000 for these season we are getting close to 8,000.
Beira-Mar his in 10th place, I know we can do better, we got to play Sporting, Porto, Benfica, Braga all at home, in the next couple months.

If this is the case why does Benfica sit in 3rd place with no hopes of a title once again!

From Corruption, to bad results on the field, this once glorious club is now in the toilet.

Even there best player is a Sporting castoff who couldn't cut it in Barcelona and came crying back home.

They need a complete overhaul, eliminate all of the old useless players and start all young players. At least we would see some consistency.

What is the point of signing Zach Thorton if he is not going to play. You can always find a backup keeper without spending any money.

This must make the kid Moreira feel real good. Now he has to look over his back.

    What a mess.

Benfica his on the right track, and we have to be patient
the important part if to be fair when we lose, without starting any trouble
Our time will come, just like it did with Sporting
