Maybe this has been on before or not but last night while watching the EPL I caught "Sky Fan" on Fox Sports World for the first time. It was essentially a replay of the Blackburn v Fulham game from late last season and they switched the audio to two fans from the opposing sides doing the commentary in the booth. Each announcer is a fan from either side of the club trying to call the game and let's not say it wasn't a bit biased. The two guys (Charlie & someone) last night had me laughing aloud quite a bit trying to outwit one another while dogging their own players as well as the oppositions. Just listening to them drop whatever point they were trying to talk about and start screaming and cheering whenever their winger ran into the offensive third was hilarious. "so Andy Cole finally decided to put down his remote and get off his sofa for this GO STEVIE!!! RUN!!!! AWWWW!!!! REF-EREE!!!! WHAT IS THAT!!!! TWO MEN GOT'IM FROM BEHIND!!!!" It could be great idea if MLS tried this and did a webcast or used the SAP audio feed feature on their games to introduce this to two lucky fans that were picked each week for the home and away squad. Obviously they might have to set up a trust/kitty to pay the FCC fines for a while. So in case you get bored of Stone & Balboa you hit the SAP button (Secondary Audio Programming not Spanish Audio Programming as its come to be known) and get the passionate fans perspective instead of the canned obvious commentary that mainstream TV forces up on us. The only reason I suggest this is because the game these guys were seeing and reacting to was the same game that I was. Their gut reactions, elations and critisisms were all in line with what I was thinking in my head and made it fun to watch as if I was watching it with a buddy and not my girlfriend who at games is usually crowd watching or digging in her purse for gum. The canned commentary has it's place but the secondary, less formal approach could be it's own phenomenon too. Imagine reviewing highlights on MLSnet.com in the two formats. I think everyone here would choose the fans buildup of the goal over the missed call by the standard announcers because a producer was talking in his earpiece or he was looking up a stat. Ralstons free kick from last week was exceptional and the call on that play was kind of ... "Well he hit that pretty good". The same call from a Revs fan would of been like "Daaaaaaaaaaaaaamnnnnnnnnnnnnn did you see that. Oh what a magical right peg Stevie has. The crowd is dead silent with their mouths gaping open after that one". etc.... I think you get my point.
