...and more blurbs, including: http://www.bayarea.com/mld/mercurynews/sports/5644951.htm * Mulrooney considering Europe after 2003 MLS campaign... * Ailing Quakes * CA v. El Salvador 5/7/03 at Spartan on sale today * CONCACAF Champion's Cup update And, if you're into the EPL at all, don't forget today at noon is the Mother of All Matches™, as the Gunners take on ManUre at Highbury. The Arse are three points behind the Red Devils with a game in hand as the EPL season winds down. Vieira's back for the good guys, and Becks will be back for the ****s. Noon on FSW (although COMCAST's online schedule sez Arse v. Man City), and apparently also live on FSN (although their online schedule doesn't show it).
Not that I like the Gunners, but I hope Man U loses big style today. I'm still pissed about the Newcastle game.
so if Ekelund still can't go 90, we might see Ramiro start in central mid again and have Ronnie come off the bench. hopefully Golden Boy is eating his chicken soup and will be fully restored by Saturday. doesn't sound like Mulrooney wants any part of the long-term contract the Quakes and MLS are offering him.
I'd be happy if the Quakes drew over 16,000 and I don't have to fight some soccer mom and her screaming kids to get my seat back Plus, if we draw well it should shut up those out there that keep saying "move San Jose" due to poor attendance.
I hope Mulrooney (and agent) are just negotiating. Or maybe he feels like he's accomplished everything he can accomplish with the Quakes? But for a guy who is still on the edge of the national team, playing in front of Arena could be a reason to stay here. Financially? Well the idea that americans are going to get silly money in Europe has mostly passed, unless your name is Friedel or Keller. Tony
though I don't want to see mulrooney leave, I couldn't blame him if he wanted to go to europe for a while. you can only play this game for a short time, might as well experience whatever you can. but all things being equal, I'd rather have him on the quakes.
saturday is seat cushions for the first 10k....which means get there early lest you want that soccer mom to rest her patootie on your seat cushion.....
The attendance at the game will be awesome since I can't be there, remember?       GO EARTHQUAKES!!! -G
Oops. I misread the Merc this morning. The game IS on FSW right now, but it's not also on FSN, it's also on FSE. Sorry.
So Richard wanted to play for Rayo Vallecano after all. Anyone remember our little flame war with datruthurts...
To the contrary...we'd better draw a ton more than 16,000, or the "move San Jose" crowd will have plenty of ammunition. Look what we have here, all on one ticket: *The greatest womens' soccer player of all time and the world's leading goal scorer, *oh, by the way, the local womens' side *the greatest draw in American mens' soccer *the local side's opening game If the C-Rays were on their own vs. Washington, I'd expect 16,000 for that fixture alone (they've done it before). This event needs to draw 25K or better to keep the wolves from our door. Just my opinion...based on nothing I know for sure.
I just went to Ticketmaster. Three days before the game, I can get great seats at midfield or any other section in all price ranges, just a few rows from the pitch. They're gonna need a great walkup just to get the 14-18,000 they're hoping for.
Overall, the average attendence per game is roughly 17,500 this season to date with only "stinker" crowds in Dallas (9K) and Chicago (7K) for their openers...and how much of that is due to the rental halls (and horrid weather in Illinois?!) Otherwise, the numbers have looked pretty good for opening games (though I haven't researched it against openers in past years.) I'm encouraged just by the increased amount of talk I hear about soccer these days. I'm also noticing a slowly growing trend (at least around my hometown) where more and more people are finding it fashionable to wear soccer jerseys on the streets. There's more written in the papers, it seems. As Spartacus said, I'd love to see 25,000 at this game but I'm guessing more like 17- to 18,000. I'd be pretty happy with that for starters, knowing that next week we'll have 20-large for the Galaxatives. The next home date after that...5/17 vs. Brian McBride and a very skilled Columbus side. This is good stuff!!! Johnny Moore is already on record that we've got advance sales of 12,000 tickets. That's already better than the 10,104 we drew for last year's opener vs. NE. If we win these first two at home and keep picking up a win here and a point there on the road...the crowds will keep coming, IMHO.
I'm holding out hope for the solid walk-up business once the weather finally breaks and people realize it won't rain on them if they come out for the game. It's been hard to say for sure before today.
I looked at weather.com and it says sunny skies for saturday in san jose. unless you're the wizards, then it will be raining goals on their sorry a$$es.
Thanks for the link. Bad news about Mulrooney, but I wouldn't blame him if he did something like Wade. Heckuva opportunity.... And how about those Gooners today, stinking up Highbury? Pretty clear which side was better today, despite a dodgy offside call.
I see that Rayo Vallecano, Richard's almost destination, is now firmly in last place in la liga and possibly headed for relegation. Tony
