Courtesy of the latest Soccer America Confidential: 3. SIX OF THE REVS FOR USA? An unofficial, preliminary list of U.S. players for the Nov. 17 friendly against El Salvador includes six from New England. The obvious choice of forward Taylor Twellman is supplemented by Steve Ralston, Adin Brown, Joey Franchino, Leo Cullen and Daniel Hernandez. Ralston has earned seven caps (1997-2000). Franchino played 13 minutes in a friendly against Mexico in October, 2000. Cullen played against Chile and Jamaica in 1999.Players will begin training for the match Nov. 11. Uh, wow...... The Magpie
Awesome for two reasons! 1. The obvious, the Revs appear to be well represented 2. The US is using this match correctly IMHO from on on-field standpoint. These, just after World Cup, a ways before other tournaments, matches should be for bringing in new players to see who may or may not be ready to step up at the international level. Perfect time for these guys to make an impression, even if El Salvador is hardly World Cup caliber. All parties benefit here, on field wise.
Twellman and Brown are obvious as their play has been fantastic. I am actually a tiny bit disappointed that Heaps wasn't called. I can't think of a right back who has been playing better for the last 2 months. Joey F is good, but I think he is in because left back is just a tough position to fill.
even though I like Ralston, I am unconvinced. I think he is a little soft for international play. But I am ALL for giving him a chance.
as a related sideline....d.c. get this match v el salvador. once again showing how desperate u.s. soccer is to get $ into the coffers. i suppose this will be another cheap way to show some of the new guys what an "away game" feels like. i can't totally fault us soccer for thinking of $ first...but, after the issues that came out of the u.s. v honduras match last september (i attended) i was personally hoping they'd see no international action there again. also, maybe some of this is an attempt to showcase a "non-racist" ticket system to use as "exhibit b" during the law suit.
Atta way Bruce! I always knew you were a genius! Nice to see Hernandez get a crack - it's about time.
Part of Arena's thinking may be that the Revs players (along with the other semi-finalists) will still be in pretty good condition, while the other US based players are probably already in their "recovery" stage. I'd imagine they won't be calling up an European-based players, as they'll be in midseason. The one that shocks me is Cullen.
Bruce is awesome. He has stated that if ya play well in MLS you'll get a chance at the Nats ... and he's still sticking with that. At the very least this reminds every eligible player to work their a$$ off and they will be recognized! KF
While the report is accurate, don't get too excited. Being in the pool is not the same as getting called into camp. Getting called into camp doesn't guarantee being on the roster, etc. etc. I heard 30 in the pool, 22-24 in the camp.
I was really surprised by Cullen and Joey. However, even if they don't play, this should give them more of an incentive to play better next year if they think that they're fighting for national team spots, and Joey might rethink some of his more blatant cautionable offenses.
Actually the el sal fans that were here for the last qualifier before WC98 were a great group. My team somehow managed to be the only American fans in our section and it was a great time. Nice light hearted back and forth and lots of good lucks to us when the match was over. The worst behaved fans I have seen were the Barbados fans who managed to swear more than a Marine DI in front of a groupg of little kids and were not too happy to be kicked out of the stadium Behave like an arse, get treated like one I guess Are the El Sal fans still PO'd about Diaz-Arce ? Or have they forgotten his old broken down behind ?
Love the Ralston possibility- he deserves another look. If Lewis can make the team, then I think Ralston is at least equal to him on the other foot.
i agree. that was my 2nd qualifier and they were great.....and they came out in droves....from long distances to sit in 40 deg snow flurried weather...and they made noise. i wasn't really talking about e.s. fans being badly behaved. only talked about honduras match in relation to how ill-equiped rfk staff is to respond to any minor disturbance. god forbid an emergency of any kind.
I was at the Honduras game an other than them being 70% of the crowd there wasnt any distrubances at the game at least I thought there wasnt
Thanks to the Revs for providing Danny Hernandez with a chance to maybe reignite his enthusiasm for soccer, after OZ tried to grind it out of him. Metro fans were thinking he was in line for a cap based on his excellent play for the first 2/3 of the 2000 season, until he blew his knee out. I hope a possible future as an international is enough to keep him serious about the game.
This reminds me a lot of every Nats camp after Kansas City's MLS Cup victory in 2000. Players like Kerry Zavagnin, Matt McKeon, and Brandon Prideaux rode their team's success to training camp, only to sit on the bench during the games.
Yes, but that doesn't make it a bad thing. It's still recognition - and all of these guys probably hold out a tiny fantasy of playing in a WC, so I doubt any would think it would be a waste of time to practice for Arena, even if that's all it came to. Ralston, Twellman and Hernandez (quality dmids are in demand, especially with Armas injured) will probably get a legitimate shot at playing time. Franchino has little chance, if Arena were looking for short defenders Steve Cherundolo would be first in line. Brown might get a look, but it's a crowded field of young keepers.
,.., well Franchino's got that left foot going for him, although I think he's too slow to be an international level left back
I was surprised that Joey and Leo were called before Rusty... But kudos to them all...hope a bunch of them join Carlos on the team and the field on 11/17.
On one hand, I agree with that. On the other hand, someone needs to kidnap Rusty after the season ends and keep him away from the pitch until he's healthy.
I don't think people are giving Brown the level consideration that Bruce might be. Arena has always liked BIG keepers - remember when he Garlick go (a very accomplished keep) and held onto Presthus. Besides, the list of young prospects is not that long (who besides Howard would go ahead of Brown?) and Brown is made in the Arena mold of goalkeepers. Out of the whole bunch I think he might be the most likely to play a major role for the U.S. nats (if he can stay healthy that is).
No one is hotter than Brown right now....how many clean sheets has he posted recently?? I wouldn't be surprised to seem him play big minutes on the 17th.
