Manchester United will not be making a move for Everton striker Wayne Rooney, according to Sir Bobby Charlton. Rooney has been repeatedly linked with a £35m move following his superb performances for England at Euro 2004. "I think he's quite happy at Everton and I don't see any reason why he shouldn't stay there," said Charlton. "At the moment Alex (Ferguson) has not come to us demanding: 'Let's have Wayne Rooney'. We are quite satisfied with what we've got." Charlton, a director at Old Trafford, backed comments from the club's chief executive David Gill that they have to be prudent in the transfer market. "Wayne Rooney is a great player, but he's not our player," Charlton told MUTV. "David Gill has already said that Wayne is not for us. We have long-term plans and we are a bit careful, we don't just throw money away." United have signed Gabriel Heinze, Alan Smith and Liam Miller this summer but Gill told the Manchester Evening News: "We do have the power and the financial muscle to compete effectively in the transfer market. "But if we're up against Chelsea and they desperately want a player, they will probably outbid us. "They can't get every player but in a straight fight with them we may lose out. "That's why our scouting network needs to be good so we can identify the other player. If Chelsea have got their number one priority, we can go for the other guy." Everton are keen to hang on to Rooney and have opened talks with his representatives to discuss the offer of a new five-year deal for the 18-year-old. ----- I'm not sure what to make of this nd would also wonder why he flet the need to make that statement rather then keep quiet.. What does the club stand to gain from making such a statement I doubt it's a smokescreen cos Bobby is an honest person so it would genuinely seem as though we're not going in for Rooney...or, it means Fergie will speak on the subject with those that need to know sometime in the near future...
Well, I dont mind not getting Rooney... hopefully we will see how things go in the first half of the season and see what needs addressing, either more cover on the wings or for Keano or whatever... I think its a good move not to blow money on a position we have reasonalby covered, after all, Saha has not had a fair run yet and we already have Smith and Ole is returning.
Yeah but imagine sticking Smith and Rooney on in the 75th minute! Ole is like 31 and declining a bit? Also European teams would sh1t bricks against Ronney, Madrid etc. Why did Bobby have to open his trap? If we loose one top striker like Ruud or Saha we're weak again.
I don't understand this either. Could it be a message to Rooney, perhaps... to not alienate himself with the Everton fans? If so, you'd think it could be done more discreetly. Well, not quite... I think he is not the world's best finisher... but the physical part of his game, jumping, heading, shooting with power, speed, athleticism, is really quite above average... I think he is the nearly complete package... his control is not Ruud-like, Ruudy, or Ruudeous what ever u want to call it, and he is not the best finisher out there... however I think he does so much that he is bound to get chances and he will put a few into the back of the net... look for him to net about 15 for us next season in the Prem. Honestly, part of the reason I am so excited is the fact that Ruud wont have to do all the bloody work and that we finally have cover for him and another striker who plays well in the 4-5-1 should it come to that..
Hell...I'll go out on a limb and say Saha has all the requisite talent to be a top five striker in Europe. He very fast, strong, good in the air, capable of destroying any defender off the dribble (not that he does it consistently but he has the "bling"), has great shot power, sees the field well and make nice passes...and so forth. It is the mental aspects of the game which he has lacked and now he seems to be coming to maturity. A player mis hits a striker from 15 yards and sends it over the bar..the next time he nets easily from 18 yards on a seemingly more difficult play. If that is a hallmark of a player then to me it is evident he has the skill but lacks the mental focus to perform consistently. That used to be and still is my rating of Saha but he's made large gains in terms of mental focus and toughness, and his desire/workrate seems to be growing.
As a player, Rooney (Shrek) could go either way. He will either be another Paul Gascoigne and have a couple of great years before alcohol, food, lifestyle finish his career. Or he could develop to be an Alan Shearer type all round striker (all he his lacking in this regard potential wise is a decent left foot). I personally think he would be worth a punt. SAF can manage this type of player and he also has a lot of commercial appeal in the UK which I am guessing this is not down to his looks I think Bobby's comments were spot on and reflect the situation. If Rooney stays at Everton, then fine. If he chooses not to accept the new offer, then we are well positioned given he does not want to move out the area. A fee of around £30million is about as far as I think we should go - like Bobby says we have strikers so dont 'need' him. But if available, then this is the type of player who should do well for us. The position he can play of withdrawn striker also means he can offer something different.
In all honesty Sofabloke I really do not know why people keep pairing Rooney with Gascoigne and Owen in terms of him blowing out or taking up a debauched lifestyle. I mean Gascoigne was an extroverted character with a wild personality Rooney is the complete opposite of that. Rooney doesn't even want to leave his home town let alone go partying all night in a city like London which is polaric to Gascoigne's behaviour so I don't get it with the lifestyle comparisons. Ability wise there is no doubt both were considered child prodigies, but that is as far as it goes. Rooney is engaged at 18 >_< and doesn't like the spotlight or attention where Gascoigne embraced it. There's not been any talk of Rooney's eating habits in any media format so him standing to gain loads of weight is unfounded. He's stockily built and young - it really isn't a first. I've seen players who people wouldn't look at physically and think 'athelete' who made their contemperies look like lesser mortals (we could start with Puskas and Maradona and work down to the Jan Molby's and Ronald Koeman's of this world) but rarely did they get put upon with the comments that seem to follow Rooney. I don't get it *shrugs. His performances on the pitch and in training are what matters not his physical appearance. This isn't a rant, I'm just seeing the same comments about Rooney springing up which are unfounded, thought I'd add my 0.02 cents.
